The Stag's Head is a no-brainer pick when it comes to the "where are we going for a beer?" question. Good local beer representation, and many styles. You'll never be wowed by the selection, but they will have something you like. Good grub and a fun, attentive staff. Bring a board game, throw some darts, or b.s. on a very comfortable patio.
Probably my favorite spot during off-peak hours, but this seemingly spacious spot can get uncomfortably crowded very quickly. But it's currently the only pub I can say that I know the majority of the staff by name... and that says a lot. (A)

This is a nice pub to visit just north of Highway 59 and the Rice Village area. The vibe they are going for is a British pub. There are a couple of TV's to watch sports, but the volume is not on which I think is nice. Instead they have music playing low. There are also some darts in the back. A big wrap around wood bar with seats on all four sides is at the center of building. Some tables around that and a little beer garden outside.
They have over thirty beers on tap. Not the best selection in town, but very good none the less. The Gman and Flying Saucer has this place beat as far as selection, though not many other places around Houston do that I have been to. They have Belhaven, Fullers, Youngs, and the rest of the British beers that are easily available around town. They also have some Real Ale, and several Saint Arnolds. When I was there they had the Amber on cask, which was great. I had a very mediocre burger, and nothing else really looked good on the menu.
The service is nothing to complain about. It can be slow on occasion. Though overall a good place to quaff a few beers with friends. I especially love that they are one of the few bars around town that have a cask. It is always something from Saint Arnold, and I love it.

The Stag's Head is a sort of diamond-in-the-rough place. It's unassumingly tucked into a strip mall, at the confluence of some confusing traffic configuration. Inside you'll find a centrally-located bar, with seating on all four sides, plus booths and tables for eating and a darts area. The lighting is low and pub-like, and the ceiling is decorated with rows of pewter mugs hanging on hooks. Usually crowds aren't too heavy, and while the interior is not necessarily cozy, it has a neighborhood feel to it.
There are around 35 beers on draft (no bottles), but unfortunately around a third of that is dedicated to the likes of BMC, Dos Equis, Fosters, and the Shiner beers. Other than that you will find some British Isles brews such as Boddingtons, Smithwicks, Guinness, and Fullers ESB. There's nothing too groundbreaking going on here, but there's pretty much something for everyone. However the Stag's Head gets huge bonus points for being one of the few joints in town to offer St. Arnold cask-conditioned beer. Usually it's the Amber Ale but sometimes the Elissa IPA or a seasonal might sneak in.
The staff is mostly friendly, and trusting enough to start you a tab without taking a credit card (adds to that neighborhood vibe). At times I've found they can be somewhat aloof, but then again I also once got a tour of their keg cooler from one particularly nice barkeeper.
The Stag's Head features a full menu, including traditional English fare such as Bangers & Mash and Ploughman's Lunch. The food is pretty good, and it's nice to have something to snack on in case that cask-conditioned ale is making you hungry.

A classy English pub with about 35 different beers on tap. The food is really good and it was voted "Best Bar Food" in the city by the Houston Press. Wednesdays are usually pint night where you get to keep the glass of the featured beer that night. For those techno beer geeks, they now also have free Wi-Fi access so you can update your Beer Advocate review while sipping on a pint. There are also dart boards in the back and live bands during the weekend. Overall, its a great place to relax with friends and unwind at the end of a long work day.
