This starts with a lot of tropical fruit upfront and then lighten to a watermelon, before hitting a piney bitter tone. The malt holds through with a very grainy bran. At 10% it's a bit thin but exceptionally easy to drink.

Its a smooth good Imperial IPA. It's a little over the top on the hops where the wheat is not evident enough or there to even balance the beer out but I always look for it in stores and on a draft list.

From a bottle, pours a copper orange color with a wispy white head.

The smell is medicinal, butterscotch, faint citrus rinds and candied sugar. The flavor is very bitter, like chewing on a lemon or orange rind and it leaves a soapy aftertaste with a trace of alcohol.

I have to admit, this is a disaster.

Appearance: Pours copper, with a decent cap of foam; strands of lacing linger

Smell: Butterscotch and aspirin

Taste: Butterscotch bomb (diacetyl) with a growing piney bitterness that verges on aspirin tones; the malts return in the finish though the bitterness also lingers

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with low to moderate carbonation; a bit flabby

Overall: Surprised that this has 100 IBUs and while there is considerable bitterness, it lacks to beguiling flavor of a great DIPA; plus, the diacetyl ruins the malt base

This beer is awful. Over priced 9 dollars plus tax for a bomber, no hop presents at all.. Mega malt bomb! No dating on bottle either.

Appearance – 90: On first pour, Hoptimus delivers a shimmery copper body and a smokey dark brown. The head was small with around an 1/8th of an inch. The carbonation was light, not super bubbly but it keeps it refreshing. Physically, this bottle has the coolest label out on the market right now. If you are a sucker for fancy labels on wine or beer (like me), this will hook you in on first glance.

Aroma – 92: The smell has a light bitter smell on first whiff. There is a small sweet smell that lingers of caramel. Overall the floral smell of hops dominate with the light after smell.

Body and Texture – 90: The nice part that I enjoy out of this IPA is the texture. It is a light ale and does not give the heaviness a lot of IPA’s will give you. The small body delivers a light feeling in the stomach and it goes down smooth.

Taste – 92: Hoptimus is self-labeled as a special pale malt and Imperial IPA. The first few sips hit strong with the thick hop taste. According to the bottle, New Albanian put in 4 additions of nugget hops, one late cascade hops, and dry hopped with cascade again. Due to the amount of spices they add in, (especially towards the late end of the brewing process), they dominate the palate. However, unlike most overly hopped IPA, Hoptimus isn’t too bitter. The nugget creates a hint of sweetness which lingers on the back end.

Overall – 91.5 (Excellent): As an IPA enthusiast, this is one of my favorite all year around IPA’s. The hoppy flavor is strong but not overbearing but instead refreshing with a sweet finish. The light body makes it perfect for a meal or for hanging around watching a football game. I have a bottle or two around my collection at all times and any IPA fan should too.

Purchase Value (C+) – I bought mine at $9.10 but I recognize this beer is not for everyone. The high hop flavor and light texture might turn some people off. For an IPA lover though, this should be a staple of their craft beer rotation.

I really had some high hopes for this one. Not exactly the hop bomb I was expecting. I bought the 22 at the Pizzeria and Public House just a couple weeks ago so I sure hope they aren't selling old IPA out of their own shop (I couldn't locate a date on the bottle but you'd think they'd be selling fresh stuff in their own house). Don't get me wrong, it's a fine beer. The taste however was dominated by the malt with hops in the background. I felt like I was drinking a mild English pale ale instead of a IIPA. Their website claims "Aggressive hops and noteworthy bitterness" - I got neither. At 8 bucks for the bomber it's a little too steep to not get what you expect.
