Ahhhh Lynn's. The tiny oasis in the very stark beer landscape that is Elkins.

Lynn's, led by their beer guy Kevin, was one of the first places in the area to stick their neck out and take a gamble on this so-called "craft" beer thing a few years ago when the 6% cap was lifted in the state. They do an admirable job and I support them on a regular basis, but there is always room for improvement.

Atmosphere and service is that of a very small, busy cigarette and lottery ticket outlet (and I do mean small). Sometimes there are local characters just loitering around in their comfort zone but they are harmless if you don't feed them. The girls that work the counter are friendly in a hurried kind of way, but will always give you a smile if you treat them like a person. They usually know what they have in stock and can answer the most basic questions about the beers, but they won't make suggestions.

Prices are fair, sometimes even cheap, and the beer is treated well and kept cool and dark.

The selection is what is surprising. There is not much space in this store--did I mention that? You just wouldn't expect to find anything good in a store this size. Most of one cooler door dedicated to bombers and singles (alot of Rogue, sometimes Wychwood, even Chimay and Rochefort 10). Perhaps 3 other doors hold decent crafts--whatever the distributors can get (always SN, also Flying Dog, Breckenridge, Great Lakes, etc; lately Sea Dog and a couple other surprises). Kevin is very excited about the new beers coming into the state and loves feedback on what to get next and what has been good in the past. He is really trying to make the place known for it's micros, all the way down to posting copies of "100 beers to have before you die" (or something like that) on the cooler doors. He puts corresponding numbered tags in front of the beers he has in stock. He posts new arrivals on Twitter.

Within the past couple months they installed a huge walk-in cooler in one end of the store that takes up about 1/3 of their floorspace, no joke. I had high hopes that they were in the process of creating a space to force all the BMC into so that he could free up the cooler doors for more craft selections. Alas, the Big Boys (including Yuengling, which is a craft beer parasite around here) just don't seem to want to pull out and make room, but hopefully they will have to in the near future. The set-up is there, the spirit is right, and if they could get more cooperation from the distributor on selections and placement, this tiny store would kick ass.
Regardless of what the overall grade is, I'd give Lynn's an A for effort.

Update 08/28/12: Lynn's just keeps getting better and better. As new labels are approved in the state, this store gets them. If the distributor is reluctant, Lynn's pressures them. I cannot speak highly enough of the efforts that this store is making.
