12oz can, sample from the brewery.

Lots of lacing action on the glass, pours a bright dark amber red hue. Orangey, plumy spicy, rind-like, bready, and punget nose. Deep smoothness, semi-creamy body. Deep rye maltiness, bread and a bit of spiciness. Semi-aggressive hopping with orange rind, pith, and tea on the palate. Ample hop bitterness, good balance. Fruity and warming, bitter and toasty. Very enjoyable to knock back.

Keeping it simple, the hops come through masterfully in smell and taste. The malt complements the entire experience. Highly recommend to anyone who has the opportunity to try.

Great nose, creamy mouth, somewhat metallic finish. Middle mouth is more malt than hops. Nicely balanced. Good.

Hops are up front, the rye and hops are flavorful and not as bitter as rye often makes a brew. The malt makes it very smooth. Great mouth feel. Very, very good overall.

I picked up a can of Blackrocks Brewery's Flying Sailor Red Rye last week at The Lager Mill. I'm always down to try a new a beer from Blackrocks, so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a 12oz can into a IPA glass.

A- The can looks good, it's got a nice design that goes with the name and it's a little eye catching. It poured a nice ruby and crimson color that took on more of mahogany like color when held to the light with a fingers worth of creamy tan head that died down to a thick ring that stayed till the end and it left some spotty lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart a fruity and generic hop aroma with some nice berry like aromas coming through. Up next comes the malts which impart a sweet malt, toasted malt, caramel malt, caramel, brown bread and bread crust like aromas. Towards the end comes a little more sweetness with the rye showing up and it imparts a nice and noticeable spicy rye aroma. This beer had a very nice aroma, I like the berry aromas and it's well balanced.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart the same aspects, but this time the generic hops flavors show up just a little more than it did in the aroma, but it still has that nice berry aspect to it. Up next comes the malts which impart the same aspects that it did in the aroma with no single aspect seeming to stick out the most. Towards the end comes the rye which impart a noticeable spicy rye flavor and on the finish there;s a medium amount of bitterness with a sweet malt, hoppy, berry and r ye like aftertaste. This is a very nice tasting beer, it has really good balance and the hop profile and rye are pretty nice.

M- Smooth, crisp, a little creamy, on the thick side of being medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel is good and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a very nice beer and it's a very nice example of the style, it had all the aspects that I was looking for and they all came together very nicely with no single aspect being to overpowering and the hop profile made it a little unique. This beer had nice drinkability, I could drink a couple of them. What I like the most about this beer is the taste, aroma and drinkability, they were all very nice and the highlights of this beer. What I like the least about this beer is nothing, there isn't anything that i disliked or would change. I would buy this beer again when looking for a good rye IPA and I would recommend it to anyone looking for the same. All in all I was very happy with this beer and a little impressed, rye IPA can be hit or miss, but when it comes to blackrocks it's a hit. It's one of the better Blackrocks beers I've had and it's a very nice example of the style. Good job guys, this is just what I look for in Rye IPA, keep up the hard work.

Consumed on September 2nd, 2016. Poured from an undated can into one of those fancy Sierra Nevada IPA glasses.

Moderate pour results in almost four fingers of light yellow-biege colored head composed of fine, dense bubbles. That head hangs around a very long time, providing not only a thicker-than-normal cap atop the beer but also some spotty sheeting. Beer color is somewhere between dark honey and light amber and only slightly hazy.

Aroma is tame, with sweet amber malt and very mild peppery rye. Some raw, herbal hop character and garlic and onions when glass is aggressively swirled.

Flavor is somewhat sweet up front with caramel malt, segueing into restrained black pepper and rye notes. Low bitterness on finish.

Mouthfeel is somewhat creamy and a little thick. No carbonation bite.

Overall, I suspect this can of beer is past its best-by date, but without any discernable markings to tell the consumer so, well... you get what is probably a faded, mellow beverage. Is this how it is supposed to taste? Who knows? Not me. If I knew the sample I was going to get was fresh, I would try this again. Otherwise, pass.

A - Pours a dark ruby red with an off-white foamy head. The head lingers leaving heavy soapy lacing.

S - Aroma is floral hops, spicy rye, and citrus.

T - The taste follows the aroma with lots of orange and grapefruit upfront. The rye and piney hops show midpalate. There is a nice sweet malt backbone holding everything together.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy.

O - This was an awesome beer. The flavors are nicely balanced making this an extremely drinkable Rye IPA.

12 ounce can into tulip glass; no can dating, but is a recent release. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Awesome appearance. Aromas of big tangerine, pineapple, grapefruit, peach, mango, melon, papaya, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, spicy rye, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, pineapple, grapefruit, peach, mango, melon, papaya, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, spicy rye, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, pineapple, grapefruit, peach, mango, melon, papaya, lemon/orange peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, spicy rye, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness that increases through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth and moderately sticky/creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding rye IPA! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.
