12 oz, can - Enjoy by 10/23/19:

Pours black with a tan head that leaves plenty of lacing.

The smell is of coffee, Kahlua, chocolate. Very rich.

It tastes like a White Russian with a strong Imperial Stout mix. A strong White Russian with a strong Stout roasted character in the finish. Chocolate, some milk, coffee. Amazingly rich. Roast keeps sweetness balanced.

It has a velvety full body.

Alcohol shows a bit, as expected. but it is well-integrated (and deceptive - doesn't seem like quite 9, when it is a 9.2). Dangerously drinkable. An enjoyable, unique Imperial Stout, this is definitely one to seek out!

On tap at Kings last night.

Black with thin dark brown head. Nose is nice chocolate, coconut , vanilla, bourbon. The chocolate is nice and deep, with milk chocolate creamy flavor with dark chocolate dark fruit and bitterness. Mild oak char. The palate opens mildly sweet with dark chocolate, coconut, coffee and vanilla. Mild bourbon alcohol is well hidden. The mid palate has roast and caramel with a nice coffee flavor. Drying, roasty on the finish this beer is medium full in body and softly carbonated. A touch of booze on the finish. Quite excellent.

Type: 12-oz. can
Glass: Ball 16-oz. mason jar
From: Sun Up Brewing in Tempe, Ariz.
Price: $13.99 for a 4-pack
Purchased: Sept. 8, 2017
Consumed: Sept. 14, 2017
Reviewed as: Russian Imperial Stout

Tried a taster of this at the brewery and just loved it (4.50 on Untappd). Picked up a 4-pack to take back to San Diego. Was hoping it was good as I thought it was.

Poured a black color with three fingers of dark khaki tan frothy head. Just a few bubbles trickling up from the bottom of the glass. Good spotty lacing. Decent retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled creamy white chocolate, espresso, smooth chocolate syrup, vanilla, marshmallow and coffee cream. Wow, so damn smooth, had me excited for the taste. (Smell - 4.75)

Taste wasn’t initially as good. Really was getting that booze in the beginning, but smoothed out quickly. Got white chocolate, roasty malts, espresso, toffee, sweet caramel, vanilla, toasted marshmallow, cappuccino, smooth chocolate syrup and wet cocoa. Really wish I was a coffee drinker as I feel like this is right there. (Taste - 4.50)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. (Feel - 4.50)

This was just as good as I remembered it. Just a fabulous RIS. (Overall - 4.50)

Pours dark with creamy head that doesn't last. Hints of chocolate and cream. Coffee flavor is subdued, less than I thought. This beer is very mellow for an imperial stout. Drinks more like a coffee porter.

Poured from the can. Opaque black with a half inch beige head disappears completely leaving faint spots of lace. Strong aroma of dark roast coffee & faint earthy hops. Bold coffee flavor with sweet vanilla cream. Full texture with low carbonation. Very good.

Pours a dark black with a brown head. Smells of chocolate, sweetened coffee, and roasted malts. Taste follows the nose with some sweetness. Medium in body with medium carbonation. Overall an excellent imperial stout.

Brought home from a recent trip to Flagstaff. Poured from a can into a tall snifter. Rich deep dark brown, thin beige head and good lacing. The smell is excellent with cappuccino, vanilla, and chocolate. This carries over to the rich taste that reminds me of a nice fudge. The feel is full and velvety. Very nice beer!

Pours almost no head and the color is more on the dark brown side, than what you'd expect a 9+% stout to be. The aroma was roasted malt, mild chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. In the flavor all of those but quite mild. Bitterness and sweetness were balanced well. Average carbonation, slightly creamy, and medium body. Alcohol was pretty well hidden.

Pours black with two fingers of caramel-colored foam. Great head retention with a few strings of lacing left behind. Aroma is coffee, with roasted and toasted malts below. Flavor profile is coffee with smooth roasted and toasted malts. Nice, smooth flavor profile. Mouth feel features a velvety creaminess that is carried by a medium-thick body. Overall, it drinks as a stout should - from the smooth, robustness of the flavors, to the filling, but smooth, texture. Awesome.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 12oz can.

First had White Russian at the SunUp brewery, Phoenix, on draft into tulip. In a state not known for its beer, this big, complex Imperial Stout, which does not overdo the coffee, stands out.

Look: beautiful

Taste: Tastes like a white Russian and a stout had a love child and out came this delicious miraculous drink

Feel: They achieved the perfect cream texture

Overall: DRINK THIS BEER

Appearance: The viscous liquid pours from the can with an onyx color; the head is creamy and tan, leaving generous lacing behind

Smell: Espresso, cream and dark chocolate - rich and enticing

Taste: Dark chocolate and vanilla cream, up front, with a powerful blast of coffee building; very roasty with a dark fruit element found in espresso; the finish brings on more of the espresso character, along with the underlying sweetness

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, with moderate carbonation; somewhat creamy; some warmth in the gullet

Overall: After smelling the beer I could not wait to taste it but the flavor profile, while still very good, doesn't quite live up to the aromatics; still, a fine "mocktail" beer

Thanks, kevindp9, for the chance to revisit

No matter how out-dated, old-fashioned, or passé that older mixed drinks become, there's always room for a White Russian on our drinking schedule. Milky, chocolaty, coffee and creamy- the though suggests stomach curdling and slow sipping, but truth be known, we can really take these suckers down!

Sun Up brewers know this secret side of us beer lovers and have us in mind when churning out their imperial stout by the same name. White Russian's robust perfume is roasty of stout, espresso and coffee blends along with a hint of campfire and cream. Vanilla, booze and chocolate follow up as the dark elixir swirls and its coffee-like creme simmers on top. Sweet roast, marshmallow and chocolate splash the early palate with a creamy texture and strong toffee sweetness.

As the middle palate unfolds, the beer really takes on that white Russian theme. As the sweetness backs off of the tastebuds, its cream, chocolate and coffee builds in- seemingly of heavy whipping cream, cappuccino, bittersweet chocolate, vanilla and an overall whimsy of toasted marshmallow. Not as full or dense as you'd think, the stout's fleeting taste is one of iced latte with a campfire twist.

Full in body, but seeming lighter and fluffier than most, the creaminess of carbonation provides a pillowy lift without shredding the palate. Warm but never hot or spicy, the curiosity of Mexican hot chocolate teases the senses. Lingering with coffee and cream, makes this imperial stout most dessert-worthy!

Got this as an extra and glad that I did. This reminds me a lot of single shot with vanilla and is better in my opinion. Great vanilla and coffee flavor! It's blended nicely and smooth for a 9% abv. Look for this instead of single shot with vanilla, much easier to get and worth it.

This was surprisingly good, wasn't sure what to expect for a relatively cheap imp stout at roughly $12 for a 4-pack of 12 oz cans. Had to trade to get some from Arizona, but got multiples and glad I did... loads of vanilla what you would expect for something called White Russian. Great for a non-barrel aged stout, ISO of more.

12oz can into a tulip
no canning dates

Thanks to killett for sending this over as an extra!

A: Opaque black, 1 plus fingers width of tan head is dense appear and dissipates fairly slowly. Leaves a decent amount of spotty lacing. 4.25

S: Coffee, cream, semi sweet cocoa. Actually does have a kahlua-eque aroma. Aroma is predominately sweet, with some roasty notes to balance. Its not identical but it does smell somewhat like a white russian. Aroma is very nice. 4.25

T: Taste is very roasty, pretty big amount of coffee, dark cocoa. Its pretty bitter. Not nearly as sweet as the aroma. Kahlua notes are present. Its quite tasty. 4

M/D: Full bodied, carbonation moderate, its smooth and somewhat thick. ABV is very well masked and drinkability is good. 4.25

O: Nice beer. I probably wouldn’t have put together the association with a white russian if that wasn’t its name, as it only faintly resembles the cocktail I love, but that asides its a very solid beer. 4.25

Picked up a 32 oz. growler from Kings Convenience Market today for $8.00.

Beer poured black with a nice tan head upon the initial pour.

Nose is coffee, vanilla, and chocolate with some hints of roasted malts.

Taste is like the white russian cocktail i enjoyed yesteryear. Dark chocolate, vanilla cream, coffee, and roasted malts are masterfully crafted together.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth.

Overall this is a delicious beer that i could easily be hooked into drinking quite often. It does not quite have the viscosity i love in RIS brews but then again it weighs in at 9.4 abv which obviously makes it less chewy. If you are in Phoenix definitely find this beer!

From a Crowler. Dark with abundant tan head. Thinner in appearance. Bursting with dark coffee, roasted notes, creamy backdrop of subtle sweetness, a bit of toffee, coffee creamer, vanilla. Taste is creamy iced coffee, almost like vietnamese iced coffee, with that roasted bitter backnote that balances out impressions of sweetness. Great beer.

Richness personified. Nose screams out of the glass, huge vanilla and coffee with not a shred of over-roasted/weird dark fruit/other common misfires from big coffee stouts. Palate is sweet iced coffee with vanilla and cream. It's a lot, to be honest, particularly with the decadent mouthfeel, but a brew like this is about decadence after all, so it's hard to ding it for that. I have a feeling a bourbon barrel or even, gasp, a nitro pour might take this brew to the next level -- either softening it with the lighter bubbled feel of nitro or giving it a touch of extra depth with the barrel. As is, this is a great, fun brew that is a must try for anyone in the Phoenix area.

White chocolate, cream, roasted coffee, cocoa and molasses. The 9.2% abv is recognizable but fits it's way nicely into the taste. This is a spectacular brew and must be in the top 10 out of AZ.

Poured a rich dark black with a half-finger of thick tan head. A true Imperial stout in appearance. Magnificent. Scents of rich, robust, fresh black coffee and coffee grounds, deep, dark bittersweet chocolate, sweet, buttery toffee, notes of caramel and light roast malt. Overall impression of aroma is of a rich, deep, and appealing Imperial Stout that wonderfully combines bitter and sweet. Flavor begins with a nice flavor of rich black coffee, mingling with semi-sweet rich chocolate and a light berry-like fruity touch. Middle opens up light toffee flavors mingled with caramel, light alcohol and continuing dark flavors. Finish is rich and roasty with notes of black coffee, dark chocolate and cocoa and nicely bitter roast malt, with just a touch of toffee. Aftertaste is roast malt, bitter cocoa powder and bitter coffee with cream. Overall impression of flavor is of an amazing coffee-forward, bitter, sweet, balanced Imperial stout that is incredibly complex and appealing. Mouthfeel is full bodied with moderate carbonation and a smooth, silky feel. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a well done Imperial stout. Overall this is a fantastic Imperial stout. It is rich in aroma and flavor, with the wonderful aroma and flavor of coffee taking center stage. The mouthfeel aids the flavor and makes it quite nice. Highly recommended.
