I visited this place on a weekend in Galway city towards the end of 2010. This is a place owned by the same people as The Oslo brewpub in Salthill, Galway, The Cottage (Salthill) and The Cottage (Moycullen). They are also the same people that opened the excellent Against the Grain in Dublin.

That means that their own two staple beers are always available (Bay Ale and Bay Lager). But it doesn't stop there; they also have Galway Hooker and a number of other decent beer taps and a very good bottle list.

I found the atmosphere a bit strange; there were a couple of people having an argument over a football match; nothing nasty, but loud and annoying enough to make sure we only stayed for one drink. That is a pity, because it seemed cosy and I have heard very good reports about the Salt House. The place itself is fairly small; what you see is what you get.

I will return for another visit next time I am in Galway.

Very steep prices by Galway (and maybe even Dublin) standards. You pay for their wonderfully diverse selection and service, though sometimes they are out of the beer you request.

By far the best selection of beer in Galway city (along with the Bierhaus). See also the Oslo in Salthill, which is owned by the same people.

It has great ambience - there's even people that like to come here to play chess or other games. The lighting is nice and complements the low key music.

They serve their beer in proper glassware - goblets and the beer's own glass and that. The barstaff are generally more knowledgeable than in other pubs in Galway, but that isn't saying a whole lot.

Attractive female tenants can be found here for ye that like to apply alcohol to other interests.

A bit small, but certainly quaint.

This is sort of a local secret: the Salthouse cheats on its license and tends to stay open until 1:00 am even though it's supposed to close earlier. Last call is usually at half twelve, but they often cheat on this if you've been there the better part of the night.

My favourite pub for reviewing beer in Galway, and I've been to damn near every one.

Has galway bays own brand of beers on tap. Good selection on tap and bottle. Does not offer food. Not far from city centre and nice cosy venue in the early afternoon. Does get very busy later on. Beers can be a bit expensive like all galway bay brewery bars.

Great staff, great location, and great selection of beers, all hand-picked by the staff. One The taps are constantly rotating, as well as the bottle selections.

Great selection of whiskey as well.

Can get a bit crowded, but with good cause, because this place is savage.

20+ taps
