Notes: Charleston's got a rep as a friendly city. We're probably on some dumb list for it. All we know is word has spread further south to Florida, because our friends from Boca Raton's Funky Buddha Lounge & Brewery told us "people in Charleston so so damn friendly" at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival.

Sure, we smile. We wave. We say hello, "hey y'all," and other cute stuff. But that friendliness can be a little overwhelming to folks that aren't used to it. Same goes for this IPA, whose name came from our intern, Brynn. A double dose of Citra and Sorachi Ace in the boil and the dry hop impart a massive, citrusy nose to the beer, which is backed up by pale and wheat malts.

We love hops, but if you're not used to them, this might be too much. Don't worry, we'll keep smiling at you.

From the apparently undated can, but Charleston is right down the road, so I am not overly concerned about freshness.
Drinking everything out of Solo cups due to the inability to wash glasses #scflooding.
Appearance is clear, golden with a normal inch of head.
Aroma: some grapefruit, some spruce; pretty much what I'd expect in West Coast IPA town.
Tastes: On the Piney side of the street, but hold on, some citrus fruits are leaking out. The finish is definitely pineapple and grapefruit.
Mouf feel: Didn't even notice the autonomic beer opening system before two were consumed. Must be a nice smooth mouthfeel.
Overall: They keep selling this, I'll keep buying. Comparable to Westbrook IPA.

Pours a hazy golden/orange combo two finger off white head not much lace.

Aroma is defiantly fruity mostly sweet orange touches of mango more then the usual bitter citrus fruit. That being said I find the nose very enjoyably. Bready malt notes made more so by the wheat notes. To me more hops don't smell bitter more fruity sweet.

Taste is fruity notes more IPA bitter, orange peel touches of more bitter grapefruit rinds and some herbal earthy notes. Finish has bitterness maybe some veggy or tobacco notes.

Mouthfeel is medium with good level of carbonation.

Overall a normal IPA, nose is little unusual and I like it, but taste is regular IPA.

A - Nice bright, medium gold color, thick lacing that's bright white.

S - Juicy, bright citrus - lemon/orange/grapefruit aroma.

T - Hops from start to finish with juicy citrus orange/grapefruit/lemon rind. Some sweet flowery lavender presence. Nice lingering tropical fruit rind.

M - Thick medium body with no carbonation, creamy and gentle.

O - A nice IPA!

"Get a room already!" Those brewers at Holy City and Funky Buddha cozy up together for a unity in taste that spans some of the sexiest hops on the planet. Their IPA showcases what's best about Citra and Sorachi Ace hops.

Overly Friendly IPA swoons the nose with candy, citrus and a mild herbal backstory. Pale gold and with a hint of amber, the bubbly beer crowns with a froth, persistent lather. To taste, is light coat of honey and caramel give the impressions of candied oranges and light marmalade in initial taste.

The flavors simply blossom on the middle palate. Its radiant orange taste bridges over to the tropical side with mango and apricot. Pink grapefruit, peach and kumquat leave a high fruit flavor on the tongue before trending smoothly bitter with bold suggestions of pine and freshly muddled grasses in tow. Peppery to finish, the herbal, tea-like flavors bring a lemongrass and lemon pepper taste to balance.

With sweetness fading, the finish is softly resinous with sticky bitterness and a linger of honey to give the beer's closure a balance while still hop dominant. A long and citrusy aftertaste is of orange peels, rinds and pith, in the softest way imaginable.

I am giving this one high marks because it deserves it. Poured from the draft into a snifter at Craft Conundrum in super friendly Charleston, SC.

As soon as this one comes to me, I smell the hips jumping out of the glass. Pure hoppy goodness, much like hop juice. The hops represent a bit of floral aromas in the way of rose petals, but mostly just good ole citrus.

The flavor and the body of this one are damn near perfect for my tastes. I like dryer, more bitter beers. Fuck all that caramel flavor and "body". Give me some effervescent, alcoholic hop water. This delivers in that regard. Hop bitterness is perfect and the hop flavor is outstanding. I happen to think this one is very well balanced, toward the bitter side, of course.

Outstanding beer worth whatever props it gets.

A: The beer is hazy yellowish amber in color and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that died down a bit but consistently left a short head covering the surface.
S: Moderate aromas of citrusy hops are present in the nose along with notes of lemons and hints of caramel.
T: The taste follows the smell, having flavors of grapefruit and lemon citrus along with hints of the underlying caramel malts. There is a moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is packed with lots of hoppy aromas and flavors. I found it to be quite enjoyable and the use of wheat makes this very easy to drink.

The continuation of vacation, this time pit stopping in downtown Charleston, SC.
Enjoyed a 12 oz can of this beer, drank straight from it.
I like the slightly more hop forward IPAs that so many great breweries are releasing.

Poured from a can. Typical IPA, hazy golden honey color. Creamy white head that stays with it and small amount of lacing. Aroma is floral/fruity.

Mouthfeel is solid with good carbonation. Plenty of hops in the flavor, starts slightly fruity/floral like the nose and finishes with a decided herbal bite. Strong on the hops, this is, with slight malt underneath. Can't say I get all the citrus promoted on the can info, but tasty notwithstanding.

Certainly worthy to purchase again. Need to sample it on tap.

A: Had this beer on-tap at Gene's Haufbrau, poured into a pint glass. Had a golden yellow color and a cloudy texture. There was a small amount of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: A strong aroma of citrus (this really hits you right away), hops, and malt.

T: As expected the citrus element was very prominent in the flavor, mingling with hops, pine, and a lot of malt in the finish. Quite a big, complex flavor here. Almost seemed more like a DIPA than a regular single IPA. Very tasty nonetheless.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a somewhat slick finish. Medium-bodied.

O: Holy City has become known for some aggressive brewing and this one is no exception. It's powerful, flavorful, and well worth your time.

On tap.
This is a solid West Coast style IPA, Moderately bitter, at most, with lots of citrus notes from the hops. Good level of malt balance. More complex than the average IPA. Aroma approaches 4.

Can poured into a snifter.

3.75 A: Murky orange brown color. Lots of moderate sized yeasties throughout. Two fingers of dense frothy off-white head. Retention is very good and glass covering lacing is left.

3.75 S: Tons of orangy citrus. Secondarily piney with grapefruit. Earthy hoppiness to follow with hints of grassiness and cat piss. Bready yeastiness with just a light caramel maltiness.

3.5 T: Mild to mild-moderate bitterness. More earthy and resiny than the nose. Orange, pine, grapefruit fall to second. Again bready yeastiness with mild caramel.

3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Light creaminess with a mild bitter aftertaste.

3.75 D: Pretty good beer. Lots of good hop flavors in this.
