Very Good
Notes: We've collaborated with our upstate buddies at RJ Rockers twice before, producing Stuck on Rye 26 at their brewery and then Holy Citra, RJ! at ours. When we contemplated doing four collaboration beers for Brewvival 2014, there was no question we needed them on the roster.

Looking at the big pile of things we have in common, one stuck out: coffee. We haven't produced a beer with coffee before, while the RJ crew has done Mocha Java Porter. In the great craft brewing spirit of stealing info from your competitors (who will gladly help you because you're really friends), the inspiration for Half Calf was born.

We used cold-press coffee from Little River Coffee Roasters in Spartanburg, and applied them to a strong-ish milk stout, giving us a super roasty, black, velvety smooth, perk-inducing beer.

This seemed to be a big beer in a small package. Huge coffee and espresso taste with a nice smooth espresso feel. Light chocolate malt, cream, char and roasted bean can be found. Pretty viscous and very smooth.

L: Had this beer on-tap, poured into a pint glass at Gene's Haufbrau. Had a dark brown color and a thick consistency. There was a small amount of tan-colored head that quickly dissipated. Good lacing.

S: A nice, warm aroma of milk, coffee, and some malt.

T: The flavor is very much like the aroma: A surprising (for a milk stout) amount of coffee, a lot of milk, and tinge of malt. Most milk stouts have an overly mellow flavor, but this one is fairly complex and likeable.

F: A very creamy mouthfeel with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is a solid milk stout that's slightly different than others of the style. Very easy to drink.
