Pluff mud [plŭff-mŭd], noun, A mixture of dirt and water indigenous to the marshes of the South Carolina Lowcountry, with a distinct odor that’s endearing to locals, but off-putting to tourists and redcoats.
Our second flagship beer was an effort to bring the American Porter style to the Charleston market proper, while also making a beer that stays appealing as the mercury rises. We think we’ve succeeded in Pluff Mud Porter. It presents (and smells) like a classic porter, with subtle chocolate notes and a silky finish, but the medium body and tame ABV keep it refreshing at all times. Enjoy this throughout the year, in or out of the marsh.

22oz bottle into a mug
no bottling date
Holy City's first bottled beer, I believe.
A: Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with lightening on the edges. One fingers width of light mocha colored head dissipates down fairly quickly but leaves lots of honeycomb lacing.
S: Lots of very nice roasted malt aromas, accompanied by baker's chocolate and black coffee. Not overly complex, but exactly what a porter should smell like. Great aroma.
T: Roasted malt, heavy cream, hints of dark fruit, semi-sweet chocolate, stale blonde roast coffee. A very nice, long lingering aftertaste of cocoa and coffee.
M/D: Very smooth, carbonation appropriately low, on the thinner side but otherwise a great mouthfeel. Drinkability is well above average.
O: Overall, a very good beer. Great porter aromas and lots of flavor , but still very drinkable. I definitely recommend this one.

Ebony with a 1/2" tan head, which fades to a wisp. Light lacing.
Aroma is roasty, coffee, slight dankness.
Taste is coffee, roast malt, light bitterness.
Full body, light carbonation. Dry finish.
A nice Porter. Less astringent than usual for this style.

Got a can of this when I was on vacation in South Carolina a few months back and brought it back. Poured out of a 12 oz can into one of my pint glasses, this beer pours a very dark brown color with a nice, fluffy looking tan head that's well over an inch thick when first pored. Settles to a thick ring lining the inside of the glass at the beer's surface and some small clusters of surface foam. Minimal lacing. Aromas of some roasted malt, a bit of cocoa, and some coffee notes, and some herbal, grassy hope notes. An extremely similar flavor profile, with the aforementioned roasted malts, some cocoa and black coffee notes that give just a bit of sweetness along w/ some bitter notes and some earthy, grassy hop notes. A good flavor profile overall. Has a fairly crisp, slightly gritty, also somehow somewhat smooth, just slightly oily, medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. The flavor all linger nicely on my palate for the aftertaste for a long time after each sip. A good beer overall here.

12oz can. No dating information found.
Almost like a root beer colored body. One finger bubbly tan head. Leaves a couple of partial lacing rings.
Aroma of roasted malts, with chocolate notes.
Taste expresses more bitter chocolate than in the nose, but with a roasted malt flavor lingering in the aftertaste. Has a slight sour note overall, but mostly balanced with a correct sweetness. A minor coffee flavor is likely the source of the bitterness and sourness.
Medium mouth feel. Brings forth some tongue numbness but not unexpected. Good, supportive carbonation.
Overall has a smooth chocolate vibe but a little bitter too.

A really solid porter. Almost pure black color with a slight head. Pours & goes down smooth, feeling like it fills your whole mouth. Slightly on the hoppy side for a porter.
I would compare it to sitting in front of a bonfire in a 100+ year old house.

Poured from chilled 12 oz can into tulip pint. 1/4 inch off white head quickly dissipates to a faint ring. Opaque black in color. Nose is cocoa and liquorice. Taste is a strange bitter chocolate. Mouth feel is a bit light in my opinion and carbonation is somewhat aggressive. Not bad but I prefer creamier mouthfeel and less carbonation.

Smooth and drinkable. Tasty.
Light for a porter, but not lacking in flavor.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a Sierra Nevada tulip pint glass
Pours a nice deep brown with mahogany highlights and a big tan/khaki head that slowly recedes leaving behind virtually no lacing
The nose is mainly comprised of roasted malt, chocolate, and a hint of coffee. Nice and roasty but a bit small for my taste.
The flavor follows the nose, with lots of roasted malts and chocolate, and to a lesser degree coffee. Very smooth and silky. Lighter bodied than a typical porter, but other than that, this is a nice beer.
Overall, not a bad example of the style, though I tend to prefer my porters a bit more robust.
