When the weather is right, there’s nothing like an Oktoberfest/Märzenbier and all its malty glory. But why make yet another Märzen that gets lost in the shuffle? We decided to include some smoked malt, actually a part of some traditional Märzen recipes, to set ours apart. There’s still a rich, sticky-sweet malt chararcter, and a deep ruby color, but the smoked edge adds a fun turn to the flavor profile and also dries out the mouthfeel a bit.

Growler freshly filled at the brewery

Pours a fairly clear, dark mahogany with a dense bone-coloed head that settles to a soapy cap, leaving craggy lacing clinging to the glass. Really nice aromas of meaty, Shlenkerla-esque smoked malt, caramel, and just a touch of cocoa. Reminds me of Schlenkerla, and that's the highest compliment I can pay a smoked beer. Taste is equally smoky, with flavors of caramel, amber malts, a touch of chocolate, and pork BBQ (mmm...pork BBQ). Comparable to Schlenkerla, but not as complex. Still, really tasty Smoked Marzen. Mouthfeel is smooth and drinkable, with a touch-over-medium-body and good carbonation. Great beer from Holy City, perfect for the season.

From notes, Draft at Smokey Oak tap room.
Darker amber pour, two fingers of off white head. Pretty nice.

Aroma, Malty caramel and bread. Very very light smoke, maybe just a nuttiness.

Taste, Nice malty marzen. Some tea, yellow rainin. Caramel lingers nicely. Smoke is barely noticeable to the point I'm not sure why they mention in.

Some carbonation appears to have been lost in the pour, but there is still enough. Drinks pretty easy, 6.3% makes it borderline sessionable to me though. Pretty solid, just nothing in the way of smoke.
