On tap at the Farmers' Cabinet.

A: The porter is dark, nearly a stout, although it's difficult to make out complex hues in the darkened interior of the Farmers' Cabinet.

S: Spices are soft, aided by the Belgian yeast strain that adds a light fruitness to the darker porter aromas of chocolate and char. The pumpkin additions add some body but not enough to trigger my far of pumpkin beers.

T: The juxtaposition of dark grains and Belgian yeast is always interesting, roasted with musty fruitiness. Pumpkins, both sweet and otherwise, add to the body without leaving any starchiness behind. The sweetness is egged on by the the yeast strain. The porter never becomes too strong, instead the darker malts add a chocolate flavor into the mix. The ale is a little boozy, so moderation helps.

M: This isn't a true-on pumpkin ale, rather it is supporting only. The saison yeast and darker malts create a fruity strength that is right for the season.

On tap, at the Farmer’s Cabinet (Philadelphia, PA) on 12/16/11. Served in a goblet.

Pours a deep brown/near black, topped with a finger of smooth mocha head. This retains with a creamy ½ finger which throws up a robust cascade of froth that quickly slides back down, leaving back just a light smattering of lace. The aroma smells of zesty spice and a green earthiness that clings to a strong coffee presence here in the nose. Chocolate and pumpkin mingle along the back, where a bit too much of an alcohol presence starts to come out as well. The spice and funk of the yeast really starts to come out and play as this warms.

Like the aroma, that Belgian yeast gives the taste a lot of earthy and spicy notes, which work their way in with the chocolate, caramel, and astringent roasted character from the Porter. The squash/pumpkin combination does have a bit of a fleshy bright ripeness to it in spots but mostly has a kind of flat green feel to it that runs throughout the profile. The finish here is dry and spicy, with lingering notes of earthy bitterness and roasted coffee. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied and lively feeling on the tongue, with more of a firm creaminess then that fills out the edges of the feel. The alcohol here isn’t stinging or interfering with the flavors in any way but does add a moderate intensity to this that starts to get a bit wearing after a bit.

This was certainly interesting but ultimately just didn’t seem to fall into place like it should have. There was too much of a flat vegetal feel here from the squash and pumpkin flavors (which seemed to gain some of its strength from the spiciness of that Belgian yeast) and the overall ABV here seemed to be a tad too high to keep everything together. It’s worth a look but I wasn’t interested in a second glass.

On tap at Farmer’s Cabinet. Pours near-black with a tan head. A bit of lacing. The nose is quite spicy and has a bit of anise character to go along with some pepper. Flavor adds in a bit from the sweet potatoes and pumpkin, though still faint. Pepper and a touch of black licorice. Roasted malt there as well. Medium body; quite dry. Tasty, but a bit too spicy, whether from additions or from the yeast.

Pours pitch black and completely opaque with a 1.5 finger light beige head that very slowly fades into a lasting ring.  Streaks of lace left behind.

Spicy, earthy aroma that is much different than I expected.  Lots of zesty pepper and funky yeast along with a strange vegetal presence and sweet dark malt notes.  Like a spicy chocolate covered sweet potato pie.   I'm definitely picking up the sweet potatoes but only faint pumpkin.   They were subtle in the Autumn Saison/Pumpkin-Riot and the results are the same here.  Unique and complex nose.  The dark malts are strong as well with lots of cocoa, toffee and caramel.

Medium bodied with a balance of zesty spice, earthy saison yeast, dark malt and sweet, vegetal notes.  Soo odd but the flavors work together really  well.  Lots of peppery spice up front followed by earthy, grassy yeast before the dark malts come  in.  More sweet than roasty with some dark chocolate and subtle coffe bean.  Finishes with a sweet yet earthy vegetal presence with lots of sweet potato and some pumpkin.   Just a weird, spicy, earthy, malty fall/holiday beer hybrid.   The abv is very well masked and although it is so odd, it is very drinkable.
