375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Bright light yellow body under a minimal white head.

Awesome aroma of tropical smoothie. Light and fruity funk overlaid on pineapple juice and strawberry smoothie (maybe someone threw a piece of banana in there too). A little swirl brings up a touch harsher brett phenol character, reminding me that this is a serious beer and not just a beach party.

Sharp acidity strikes first and cleans the palate clock promptly. Close behind comes more of the oddly fuzzy and juicy pineapple and lightly funky fruit punch twang. Not quite as dry and the sourness makes it seem, and there is slightly more bitterness than usual for a wild ale (not a bad thing).

The feel is lively, springy, and light. Fizzy and refreshing.

Conclusion: Huge success in my wild ale loving book. The best I have had from CS so far, but I have not had many of their beers to date. The hops are a wonderful addition to the interesting brett complexity.

"batch 60" was quite delicious. this was their recent batch that might be a future beer with a different name. regardless, this pucker bomb was damn tasty. so much citrus and tartness. Crooked Stave continues to put out amazing beers.

Batch 60. 6.7% ABV. 375ml brown glass bottle with green wax-ed over pry-off pressure cap served cold into a tulip in high altitude Castle Rock, CO.

Reviewed live as an American wild ale per the label. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 1.5 fingers wide. White colour. Average creaminess and thickness. Retains well - for about 5-6 minutes. No lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Shiny complexion.

BODY: Clear orange-copper of above average vibrance. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears well-carbonated. It's far from unique or special for a wild ale, but is generally appealing.

AROMA: Peach, apricot, floral hops, blonde malts, funky brettanomyces yeast, crystal malts, and some mild tartness. No true sourness is detectable. I also pick up on some less distinct tropical fruit - mango and tangerine, primarily.

It's a pleasant aroma of average strength.

No alcohol, off-notes, or bacterial sourness is detectable. For a wild ale, it isn't horribly wild. Mostly just funky and fruity.

TASTE: Fantastic peach and apricot notes boast a subtle sour smackiness, with some excellent albeit mild lactic character. Blonde malts comprise the base. Subsidiary notes of tropical fruit including mango and light tangerine. It's well balanced and built, but could use more complexity/intricacy, subtlety, and nuance - if we're nitpicking. More intense sourness and tartness would also enhance it.

I do love it, though, and it has a good depth of flavour. Above average flavour intensity and duration.

Sourness is wonderful, albeit limited - it's maybe a 5-6 out of 10 in terms of sour intensity. The brettanomyces yeast lends it unusual diversity of flavour, with wild character in there in addition to the signature funkiness. It's got some wonderful woody characteristics, some welcome lemon and barnyard notes, and tang. Green apple, and some musty cellar wood.

TEXTURE: Smacky, perfectly carbonated, refreshing, smooth, and wet. Light-bodied and fresh. Great overall presence on the palate. This texture elevates the beer and compliments the taste beautifully. Incredible execution. Lightly acidic.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough or scratchy.

OVERALL: Extremely drinkable and very enjoyable. I'll blow through the bottle and will love every sip. Crooked Stave has come a long way since I first tried the beers they were brewing out of Funkwerks. This is a fantastic wild ale with impressively well-executed dry hopping and stunning balance, and it hides its above average ABV well. Great work from Crooked Stave.
