Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
In February 2015, Crooked Stave released Progenitor, a 6.2% ABV dry-hopped Golden Sour Ale. Progenitor NOIR is a little bit of a different take, using dark malts to create a "Dark IPA," for lack of a better term, while still being primary fermented with Crooked Stave’s mixed culture of wild yeast and bacteria.

"Progenitor NOIR arose from the idea that Dark IPA is tasty, so why not a sour version for the darker months we are enjoying." -- Chad Yakobson, Crooked Stave Owner/Head Brewer

While both Progenitor and Progenitor NOIR received ample dry hopping, Progenitor NOIR was concocted to have a fresh, resinous hop bite. Thanks to great hops like Amarillo, Citra and Simcoe, Progenitor NOIR is a hoppy sour worth seeking out fresh to enjoy the full citrusy, resinous goodness!

look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

Appearance: Arrives medium brown with a decent enough head; some splashes of lacing linger

Smell: Roast and chocolate, with some tartness as well

Taste: The tart flavors burst forward, with the roast and chocolate tones underneath; bitterness from the hops builds, in the middle, with some funk in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A nice twist on a hoppy sour, with the dark malt adding another dimension; prefer this one to the regular Projenitor

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Murky deep brown body. Very slight head and a thin collar. Smells hoppy. Smells like a cat's litter box. A little herbal. Grassy flavor. Grapefruit. Tart citrus. Very light roasted malt. Just a hint of the cat litter box flavor. Medium body. Moderate tartness. That aroma is really quite unpleasant.

look: Dark brown, some light coming through. Decent enough tan head.
smell: smells like the oxymoronic Black IPA with a sour edge.
taste: Tart and sour more prominent in the taste. A nice blooming tartness in the finish.
overall: Another stand out from Crooked Stave. Unique and very quaffable.

On tap - Brighton Blvd. taproom

A - Slightly opaque brown with thick white creamy head.

S - There is the expected sour lactic qualities, but the first thing I notice is the uniquely FRESH hoppy aroma. The way the hops presents itself in the aroma is absolutely stunning! I'm blown away.

T - Everything comes off well in this dry sour. Medium tartness, with pleasant hoppy flavors that follow from aroma.

F - Medium body for a dry sour. Creaminess from the head is nice.

O - A unique fantastic beer. The aroma alone earns it the score. A top beer this year so far.
