Poured much darker than expected, great carb and head. Beer immediately smelled of red wine, some roasted malts and a faint touch of vinegar. This is easily the most sour beer I've had from CS and I was not ready for it. While the acidic elements are hard to ignore, the flavors were well blended with tannins, chocolate and some barrel character, finished dry and was a pretty fun beer. I could never kill a bottle of this alone and it's a super sipper but was a lot of fun to share with sour lovers.

with all the new crooked stave beers that have been coming around lately, i have had a change of heart about doing the same beers in different barrels or with different fruits. for awhile there, thats all these guys were doing. no new beers, just variants, and it got a little stale, but with the huge influx of cool new stuff, all is good again, and a change like this is more than welcome. nightmare stands as one of the best and most original crooked beers, so the more variants on this one i think the better. this one in the red wine is so much different than the whiskey. its way more acidic, far less sweet, and honestly almost entirely different. the whiskey clings to the roastier, darker notes, and the sourness is almost secondary to the grain foundation, with vanilla and sugar hanging around for awhile after the swallow. in this wine one, i taste the wood a lot more, and the tannic acidity and fruitiness comes through so much, it exacerbates the sour notes and pulls less of the dark grain forward. cherries and plums and even cranberries are there. seemingly thinner in body, much more acetic, and still as complex and layered as ever. i think nightmare is really the signature beer of this brewery, so to see it keep evolving is always fun. two totally different beverages with the different barrel treatments, they must let it sit awhile. leopold ones may still be my favorite, but this red wine edition is a worthwhile experiment to say the least. still on tap at the source too, so i would hurry in for a pour!

Barreling brought out character. 20 months has mellowed extreme sourness, but still a berry tart finish. Lovely pre storm sipper. Thanks Jazonbee.Superior red wine barrelling, which gives tanins to make it interesting.

Had on tap in Denver. Delicious red fruit, mainly cherry for me.

Black as night with a tan head that leaves nice lacing.

The aroma is sweet, tannic, with notes of grape skins. There are some nice cinnamon notes in there. Some mildly off notes, but nothing too off putting.

The flavor is delicious with assertive tartness being balanced by toasty chocolate malt flavors. Sweet grape and tannins from the oak make this a delight to drink.

Medium to thick mouth feel. Light but noticeable carbonation, and dry tartness on the finish.

A really neat, different type of sour that really shows off the base beer, the bugs, and the barrel used.
