Hop Savant - CitraHop Savant - Citra
Notes: Primary fermented with a few of our mixed Brettanomyces cultures and then received over three pounds per barrel of Citra hops, a varietal known for its tropical aromatics and pungent citrus notes.

July 8th, 2015 - The Hops Savant CItra tastes like a blend of Crooked Stave's style with a San Diegan obsession for hops. Dank, weedy and hoppy on the aroma, it lacks the subtlety of the sours and pushes forward with the sharpest hop cone in its arsenal. The flavor practices a little more discipline with a tanginess but not an acidity. It's got a great funkiness that pairs well with the hops bitterness, itself defined by a heavy pine scent and a weediness that's familiar in Colorado.

A 375ml bottle, bottled in May 2015. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.

Appearance: A clear golden yellow colour (as there’s still a lot left in the bottle) with a huge rather uncontrollable frothy white head that dissipates slowly while leaving a fair bit of soapy lacing.

Aroma: Band-aid, barnyard, brett, citrus lemon and apricot plus hints of pineapple.

Taste: Lots of brett, band-aid, leather, pepper spiciness, orange peel and apricot.

Mouthfeel: Dry, medium to light bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: There’s just a lot of funky brett with some light fruit sweetness towards the end. For me, it just seemed to be missing some tart and sour fruit to help balance out the flavours a bit.

Smell is straight up barnyard funk, lemon peel, and Brett. Taste is lemon pith, hop bitterness, garden herbs, a hint of pineapple, and medium funkiness. All of the Hop Savant series are easy drinking, refreshing and funky beers.

Really hazy yellow color with huge, fluffy head. Aroma has intense brett along with bright, tropical fruit notes. Taste starts also with lots of yeast character but not cloying, it goes along really well with the hops, finishing bitter and fruity. Medium body with smooth carbonation. Really good brett beer, not overly yeasty and well balanced by the hops.

Citra and Band-Aids.

I would imagine that in markets that get limited distribution, this would be a decent beer, but in a region full of great beers, this one should never be allowed to take up shelf space.

May 2015

Cloudy yellow color with a huge frothy head that fills up the glass and slowly deflates to a thick rocky covering. Patchy lacing all over. Aroma is heavy on the Brett...straw, flowers, lemon, herbs, apricot, and pineapple. Flavor dips much deeper into the Citra stash: mango, grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon with a good dose of Brett and a little wooden dryness. Fluffy, medium-light feel with lower carbonation, finishing with some acidic dryness on the gums and a lingering hoppy bitterness. Drinks like 5% ABV. Skewed a little more towards the Brett than the tropical hops, but the two work together well.

375ml bottle served in a large snifter. Fair amount of the beer left in the bottle, so any sediment should not have made it into my glass. Date on the back is May 2015. It's been a while since I've had a brett IPA (even though it's currently categorized as an American IPA)

Pours hazy golden with a giant head that collapses rather than dissipates. Appears to be leaving mountains of foam and heavy, clumpy lacing. Lots of carbonation. Smell is funky more than hoppy. Spicy.

Taste is dominated by bretty funk. I get some citrus, lots of lemon. Moderate vague bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is medium, kind of fluffy. Overall, not bad.

Poured hazy light orange with a few finger head than shrinks down but leaves lacing along way. Got some milky dregs but those mixed into the hazy color. Excellent cotta aroma. The Brett helps intensify the smell. Getting lemon, grapefruit, and orange. Some nice bitterness to follow. Great feel. Nice and juicy from the hops but the Brett has a heavy carbonation. Not too extreme though. Usually not into this type of ipa, but this is the best I've had.
