i will come right out and say this... i think this is the best beer crooked stave has ever made, and if it isnt, its dang near it! holy cow, floored by it on tap at the source. for anyone who says quality and innovation is falling off with these guys needs a pour of this one. my goodness. its blood red, vampire stuff, thick and a little creamy looking, yeasty but not dirty, and heady. it is like a molten crayon, gorgeous. smells like the best framboise ever made, not kidding. has all the fruit of the lou pepe stuff from cantillon, and has just as much acid and oak and funk, its crazy. the taste might back off just a touch, but the raspberries are bursting, fresh and ripe and tangy and sweet and jammy and thick and lively and summery and amazing. red wine notes, and some dark chocolate showing through the malt. i think they were smart to use a belgian dark as a base instead of a pale or golden, the dark malt amplifies the fruit, brings nuance and depth, and makes me randy for more! is there any way i could get an iv of it? pricey, but you get what you pay for. great tip of the cap to belgian tradition, but very crooked stave across the board. for me, its amazing, as good as anything in its category that exists. i sometimes feel spoiled, like its easy for us denver beer folk to take beer like this for granted, to expect it to be this good, but really and truly, the rest of the world would be lucky to get a glass of this. some of their best work (and best label art) to date!

Raspberries, Raspberries, Raspberries, Raspberries!

This Belgian-style Dark Ale is aged in oak barrels with raspberries. A brilliant, deep red hued beer. Quite mesmerizing, and except for the pink stained foamy head, this looks more like fruit juice or wine. The nose is all raspberries. And holy bursting raspberries in my mouth! Jammy, tart, sharp, puckering, lip-smacking and gland teasing. Oaky notes are nearly lost, but lurk in the background. And dark malts break through just enough to balance out the acidity, while still allowing the berries to control the palate. The only thing silly about Silly Cybies is how deliciously silly it is.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #110 (March 2016).

Off white head. Raspberry mahogany red.

Lots of tap berries. Funky and fruity. Sour and tart. Light acidity.

Big raspberry fruit flavor. This is one of the better CS beers out there.

Wow. Good job, Crooked Stave. Completely unexpected that this one and Serenata Notturna both are classified as Belgian styles and are by and large my favorites that CS does.

Pours dark dark dark with a pinkish purplish head of foam that pretty quickly dissipates. Nose of a metric ton of raspberries, which follows through on the taste and is jammy and sticky on the mouthfeel. Perfect amount of carb for this one. Just damn. Great beer, this is one to praise.

A 375ml bottle, bottled in November 2015. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.

Appearance: A clear and extremely dark red colour with a two fingered tan-ish red head that had decent retention and left some nice lacing.

Aroma: Intense freshly crushed raspberries and raspberry jam.

Taste: Sour and tart with a combination of mixed berries; raspberry, blackberry and blueberry. It is also very jammy but the sweet only lightly shows through the tartness.

Mouthfeel: Dry, medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: This is amazing. I don’t get any of the 9% ABV which is great, but I’m also not getting much of the oak barrels that it was supposedly aged in, which while disappointing, actually meant that it was very raspberry jammy and tasty. Crooked Stave have done it again with Silly Cybies, which is a must buy for me.

Oh lord. The raspberries! Dark raspberry red. HUGE RASPBERRY nose and taste! Super jammy with a nice sour tartness. This is the BEST Crooked Stave beer that I have had.

2017 750ml bottle.

It pours a really dark reddish brown with plenty of off white foam and lacing.

Big blast of tart raspberries as soon as I removed the cork, bigger when I hold up the glass to my nose. Lots of funky oaky notes...smells grand.

I taste tart raspberries but also, if I am not mistaken, sour cherries as well. Very good oak presence and some funk. Maybe some lemon too.

Medium light body with spritzy carbonation.

Pretty fine brew here.

Dark brown in color with red highlights and a fingernail of creamy pinkish white. I smell woodsy oak, tart raspberries, and dark malt. I taste tart raspberries, woodsy oak, and Stone fruit. The mouth is highly carbonated and bone dry.

November 2015 bottle

Pours dark ruby red with a creamy frothy khaki colored foam head. Smells like jammy fresh raspberries, oak barrel, dark fruits, plum, red grapes, cherry, fig, caramel malt, dark toffee, molasses, mild chocolate, floral spice, with some earthy hops. Tastes acidic and sour with pulpy jammy tart fresh raspberries, oak barrel, slightly acetic vinous black grapes, dark fruits, plum, black cherry, fig, caramel malts, dark toffee, molasses, mild chocolate, tobacco, cigar box, red fruit, floral spice, with some earthy hop notes. Feels medium bodied, creamy and smooth with moderate carbonation. Overall a nice Belgian style dark ale aged in oak barrels with raspberries.

Dark burgundy with a red head. Once the head goes away it looks like a glass of grape juice.

Holy cow those raspberries! Fruity punch to the nose, dominated by raspberries. Jammy.

Jammy and tart flavor. The raspberries completely dominate. Slightly acidic, but no overly so.

Great carbonation and level of acidity. It's sweet but is cut well by both.

Great beer, probably my favorite from Crooked Stave.

I would just give this beer all 5 but for my desire to temper my exuberance. This is a complex beer that is also very accessible. The complexity provided by the barrel aging and perfection in brettanomyces character produce a nice "wow" factor. The raspberry aroma is mouth-watering. Fruity but not perfumey. Sour but not overly puckering. Slightly oaky but tannic or woody. Another amazing beer. It's just not very Belgian. It's not estery or phenolic. It's better than Belgian.
