In high celebration of raspberry fruit in sour ale making, the brewers and blenders of Crooked Stave rest upon a bright and sour taste that's both challenging and irresistible .
L'Brett d'Raspberry pours a seductive ruby-mauve casting a faint diffused glow. Surprisingly froth in its cap, the scent lures in the senses with jolly rancher, candied raspberry, red wine, cider and the saline scent of the sea. Creamy and sweet to the palate, the malt and fruit medley sees a fast break-up.
Sweetness dissipates rapidly and the middle palate fends for itself with a fruit-forward flavor and a souring taste that frames a light pastry-tarte character. Sheer acidity finishes the taste as the snappy, gripping and teeth-grinding sourness proves supreme. Salty sea water, salt-water taffy, and a vinegar-sharp soaken sense of raspberry lays a highly citrus and lightly funk finish.
Creamy early and dry late, the medium-dry ale shows a lightly wheaten upstart but trails into a dry and tart taste that's likely to woo the red wine aficionado. Extreme sourness is nearly heartburn inducing while the fruit of raspberry remains identifiable, in control and nearly painfully sour.

A lot of golden sours can be too heavy on the golden malts or yeast, not so here, with wonderful balance between all elements, truly letting the raspberry seep through layers of brett, yeast, golden malt, lemon, sour oak and farmyard funk. Smell is more brett heavy, but otherwise the same. Fresh, funky and layered beautifully, if the brett didn't dry out as much we could be talking true greatness.

Aroma is raspberries, mild sweetness and very slightly musty. The flavor is strong raspberries, fruit, malts, mild sweetness and a very tart/fetishized finish.
