2012 Release
The original Nightmare on Brett pours like cola. There's a slight gurgle while pouring with a fizzy, mocha foam. The foam crackles away in no time at all until this looks like a nearly still beverage. The body is surprisingly black. There is a whisp of foam here and there but not much to speak of.
This is more porter forward than the port barrel aged version Dark fruits shine from the start. Plum and prune rule the roost but there are notes of tart, underripe dark berries as well. A soft roast and coffee notes bring up the rear with a hint of baker's chocolate. The barrel aging brings with it well integrated caramel and damp oak. Very nice.
The flavor profile sways a bit more toward the wild side than the nose led me to believe. The tart dark berries lead the way with a touch of plum sweetness. The barrel rolls along in the middle with some tannic walnut pith. The roast is subdued but there along with a somewhat lactic coffee & cream aspect. There's a great play between sweet & sour that I find myself thoroughly enjoying.
The body is a touch shy of moderate in weight with a frothy effervescence that fits the style well. It's a little tart along the sides of the tongue with a growing sourness on the swallow. This beer is fairly bold, upfront, but my glass is disappearing quickly. The finish dries up fairly quickly and accentuates the tartness while leaving me needing another drink immediately.
This is a damn good beverage. It's held up extremely well over the years. It's tart with bright dark fruit flavors and a soft, well integrated porter background. Each drink seems to change or progress. The mouthfeel fits well with lively carbonation but a body more substantial than on a lot of other, thinner versions of the style.

Pour - very dark with little to no head
Smell - sour bourbon
Taste - Super sour with an interesting bourbon finish
Overall - I was very confused drinking this beer. Being confused drinking a beer has never happened before. The initial taste threw me off a bit, but I kept wanting more.
