Notes: Surreal spontaneous sour ale aged in oak barrels

Spontaneously fermented in oak barrels, L'Brett d'Or's fermentation is kicked off with the help of the natural wild yeasts and bacteria residing around our coolship and native to our brewery. Since our spontaneous beers can only be brewed during the winter months, individual releases involve blending unique barrels to bring out the best of each brewing season. Characterized by funky citrus aromas, a crisp acidic bite, and a complex finish, L'Brett d'Or will continue to age with the best of them, gaining in complexity over the years.

Thanks to rudzud again.

Light fizzy head fades fairly quickly, hazy pear golden color.

Nose brings tart funk, flesh peach apricot, stone fruit city, peach flesh out the wazoo crazy! Mild Brett funk, juicy fruit and funk, pretty much canned fresh peaches, pit notes, etc.

Taste brings stone fruit and tea, herbal tea, iced tea with tons of peach and apricot, little bitter rind pith like, juicy flesh peach, creamy wheat like malt base. Finish is dry mild bitter rind, lingering fleshy peach and apricot, mild tangy tart funk, etc.

Mouth is med bod, fleshy creamy like, decent carb,

Overall nice, nose was great but taste was lacking the awesomeness, ok.

newer one from crooked stave. pours a pale hazy yellow color with a fair bit of delicate white lace. the nose is lemony and sour apple sour, bretty and yeasty, with a very light malt profile and tons of ripe fruit. the flavor is tart all the way, a mix of green apple and lemon zest seem to be the most dominant flavors, and there is some sweetness behind the tart too, but the oaky sourness really takes control. its not quite as sour as some other crooked stave offerings, but it is a fantastic way to feature brettanomyces fermentation. could use a tad more carbonation, but the acidic sourness makes it really pop in the mouth, and the body is quite light for a beer of this complexity. its dry too, adding to drinkablity, and its mouthwatering to the point i had to order a second one. not my favorite of their beers, but certainly another distinct brew.

edit: just had a really old original bottle of this with the silver wax, and man oh man has it aged well. the complexity of the yeast has ramped way up, its a little more sour, but immensely flavorful and refined. i loved this fresh, but with a couple of years on it, i think its one of crooked staves best beers ever. seriously.

2013/Batch 2

Crystal clear golden body and a thin quickly dissipating white head.

Off top it sort of reminds me of lambic. Musty, oaky, green apples, apricot, pineapple, malt with slight souring.

Dry with light carbonation and body.

Kinda surprised me. This was gooood.

A: A pale yellow and hazy body with a very thick and white head.

S: Very good. Very sharp esters and sour aromas. Perfectly balanced with a subtle sweet caramel sweetness.

T: It starts off as a very pleasant sour apple flavor and then it transitions to a perfect sour caramel flavor. This should be a measuring stick for all sour beers.

M: Nice heavy body with a very sharp carbonation.

O: Amazing sour. Get this one as soon as you can.

Batch 2 served into a tulip

A-vibrant golden straw color with wisps of white head, no lacing.

S-bready malts and barnyard Brett notes predominate

T-the first taste I get a distinct buttery aftertaste that is none too pleasant, but as it warms there is less butter and more biscuit, lemony funk up front with a bit of green apple. Not very sour.

M-not that much carbonation and on the thin side

O-I had high hopes for this, but wonder if age would do well for this one. If you have this batch you may want to wait until summer to crack it.
