Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Artisan ale aged in oak barrels

Translated from French as “old-tradition”, Vieille is our barrel-aged classical saison. Using time-honored techniques, our saisons employ traditional methods to restore complexity and the rustic character lost in modern day saison. Saisons were the original wild ales, brewed for the farmhands to be a refreshing and sustaining beverage. Each batch of Vieille takes on a soft Brettanomyces character and a complex acidity while conditioning in our large oak foeders. After conditioning in oak, we lightly dry hop the beer to finish it, lending a subtle citrusy hop aroma. Leading with lemon and lime citrusy hop notes, a subtle herbal spice, and a crisp tart finish, Vieille’s character epitomizes artisan saison.

Crowler fill from CopenRoss. Possibly bad fill. Hazy, pale golden, fizzy foamy head. Faint yeasty aroma, bready notes. Taste too seems thin. Was expecting bigger, brighter notes, but this dull, boring, weak. Brand New place might have screwed up the fill. Relooked at this as it warmed and it got a bit better. Lemon zest and peaches, kind of tangy. Brett notes more apparent nearer to room temperature.

A - Pale gold body, slight haze, with white head, and extensive white lacing.

S - Clean floral notes, apple skin and a touch of pine, minimal funk.

T - Superb clean hit of sour grape and apple, a touch of minerality, and a light lemon zest and peel note in the close.

M - Brisk with tart prickliness.

O - A pretty and lovely beer, a Saison that delivers.

Very pale straw, close to what I’d call white for a beer, slightly hazed. Bright white foam billows up quickly, eventually leaving behind plenty of lace. As expected from the appearance, malt is very minimal here, soft pilsner-type body with some crackery wheat character. Mostly Brett-driven - not over-the-top funky but mild fruitniness, lemony tartness, a bit earthy. Balancing hop bitterness and some floral and citric hoppy notes that meld well with the Brett. A soft sourness quenches at the end. I’m a sucker for these light but complex saisons. This one is small enough to be called a Grissette. Just wish the price tag was a bit smaller as well.

A: Bright yellow, white head that lingers, slightly cloudy
S: Floral hops, musty, earthy Brett, lime, hay, lemon, briny
T: Lemon, lime, earthy, hay, watery gueuze, hint of tartness, mineral
M: Fluffy from the carbonation
O: Very reminiscent of a Jester King beer which is a compliment. Very flavorful and easy to drink with the low abv

The appearance has a hazy golden/slightly amber colored body with a two finger white foamy head that dies into the body within a half minute. There is some adequate slightly foamy lacing sticks to the sides of the glass. The smell has some rustic yet funky earthiness coming through very strong with some light lemon in the background, and a little bit of grassiness here and there. A little bit of yeast backs everything up in the background. The taste is tart with a dry woodiness to it with some yeastiness here and there. It has a very dry yet tart lemon aftertaste and a dry finish. The palate is light, very sessionable, and the carbonation seems to be good for the style and comes across fairly smooth to me, not as sharp as other saisons I’ve had, but hey I’m not complaining. Overall, this is not a bad saison, I’m pretty sure I’d have this again.

Pours a hazy orange closer to yellow orange. Close to 2 fingers of foam. Wait, looking at my glass, that’s lacing for aboot half. Saison notes of cloves, pepper and coriander. Then, it gets all hoppy and funky with a suggestion of tartness. Taste =nose. Plus it’s a dry son of a gun. I gots the cotton mouth. Joking. Heavy side of light bodied. Good job for a beer that’s the same abv as your average light/lite beer. Very very nice.

Bottle with January 2015 stamped on it. Bought yesterday.
A-Poured into a large snifter, a finger of white head quickly recedes atop a straw yellow clear brew when held up to daylight.
S-Vinous funk, atop a lemony saison aroma.
T-A funky saison. Lemon, black pepper, Brett funk, wood.
M-Light bodied. A bit astringent in the finish.
O-A saison that brings the funk. Refreshing.

Look: Decent 2-finger head upon pour. Nice Hazy light yellow gold color - almost like a pilsner. Decent retention - remains active.

Smell: Tart fruit and citrus. Lemon and lime waves waft upward. Slight cracker / biscuit.

Taste: Sour upfront (as anticipated). Slight vinegar. Quite dry and really no sweet counter balance. Decent wheat backbone and is more apparent in the aftertaste. Looking for more Belgian yeast and Saison character, but very subtle.

Feel: Light - bodied. Seemed pretty thin. A bit slick on the tongue.

Overall: Decent. Seems more on the sour side without the spicy Saison characteristics or yeast tang.

Light lemon, straw color with good clarity. Weak head. Fresh and bright citric, lemon, hoppy aroma with hints of yeast. Light and dry palate with some lemon and apple. Subtle funk. Light body. Sharp, effervescent carbonation. Dry finish. Perfect for the style. Overall, a solid saison. Lacking slightly in complexity and finish is clean.
