Notes: At 5.6% strength, its gets compelling character not from leftover yeast—in fact the beer is centrifuged to a precise degree, leaving only faint haze in its orange-amber color—but from an unusual combination of hops. Joining lemony-herbal Hallertauer Mittelfrüh is a rare heirloom hop called Hallertauer Record. Schäfer said that the variety has nearly disappeared—only one hectare grew last year—but he wanted its spicy character. It’s not a flashy beer meant for sipping and sampling; just a tasty one that will reward repeat drinking.

This Kellerbier, brewed to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot, pours to a giant (pour carefully) pebbly off-white head on a slightly hazy, effervescent golden body; head retention is moderate and lacing is good, consisting of complex bands and dots. The aroma is light-medium in intensity and deceptively simple: toasted malt, yeast and slight alcohol overtones. The flavor is tart apple over a very prominent, lightly-toasted bready malt foundation, nicely hedged in by a bright, moderate earthy hop bitterness that hints of nobility. The finish is super-clean; the linger is a modest grassy/earthy bitterness that sticks around for a few minutes. Mouthfeel is commensurate with the light body, and the texture is medium-creamy and positively tingly from the freakishly bright-feeling, lively carbonation. Between the carbonation and the bright hops bite, this beer feels positively alive. (11.2 oz bottle, 70 days after pkg)

11.2oz brown bottle, purchased from store.

Nearly clear copper hue brew, a good amount of froth to start and the lacing leaves a trail down the glass. Smells malty and bready with a hint of hop spice and yeast. Smooth with a moderate body, more than enough lager crispness. Mild spicy herbal hop, clean grainy flavor with a hint of caramel and crackers. Balanced and very drinkable, a little bit raw but clean with a hint of alcohol in the finish.

No problem filling my 24oz mug with this one, I need to go buy a case or two.

I'm not a whale hunter, and any 6 pack $10 or over usually turns my attention to something else. So when I saw the $13 price tag on this limited edition from Weihenstephaner, I almost balked. But since it *is* a German beer, and not the usual IPA or Imperial Stout LE so often lauded by tickers, I splurged.

Poured into my Willi Becher .3 liter (not the traditional clay Krug to hide the turbid look of a Kellerbier).

L -- Lightly hazy gold color with a tall, dense, off-white head that's holding long and true.

S -- Light breadiness with mild spiciness from hops. Rather thin aroma overall.

T -- Good bready flavor up front with spicy to near astringent bitterness in balance. There's a light fruitiness in the finish with crackery breadiness and strong bitterness through the aftertaste.

F -- Mouthfeel is soft to crisp with mild astringency and a light-medium body.

O -- My initial impressions are pretty negative for this one from the oldest brewery in the world. It seems rather unbalanced for a German Lager, the somewhat harsh bitterness not usually a hallmark of Bavarian beers. There seems to be a malt richness missing in the flavor that would make this beer more noteworthy to me. I saw someone compare this to Festbier, and I can see the similarities -- if not for the strong hop bitterness. I have to wonder if Pasteurization causes problems with unfiltered beers -- as if heating the residual ingredients effects the flavor character.

Not my favorite from Weihenstephan, but there are others to choose.

I rated the taste low because there's really no flavor to this beer. Light beers have more flavor to them but at least this one is superior in ABV% so it still beats light beers.

A - Copper orange body, moderate haze, light white head, lots of fine, bubbly lacing.

S - Sour grain first and foremost, floral hops, and a bit of unpleasant acidity. As it warms, more malt comes forward, suggesting bread.

T - The sour grains are present, but it is more powerfully linked to a fine hop note, herbal and peppery spice. The malts in the middle are water cracker. Very soft bittering in the close, but a sweet bread lingers long after the beer has otherwise fallen away.

M - Clean, drinkable, and highly pleasant.

O - A highly controlled, precise experience, with nuanced and balanced hops and malts mingling into a fine product that is a true pleasure to drink.

Poured a hazy orange-yellow color with a one finger white fizzy head that dissipated quickly to a quarter finger and lingered. Little lacing. Aroma is a faint baked lemon glazed roll. Flavor of sweet malt, light clove with a slightly dry citrus hop finish that lingers. This is clean and crisp with a moderate-light body and medium carbonation. The feel is great! After finishing the bottle, I definitely wanted another. Alas, I only had the one bottle from a recent bottle shop purchase. :(

Gold in color with excellent clarity. There's a solid inch and a half of densely packed off white head resting on top. Aroma is of marzipan, light malt, and German lager yeast. I taste light malt and marzipan. The mouth is very light and quaffable.

Light golden color with a frothy white head.

Aroma is peppery, cracker.

Taste is interesting, unlike any beer I've had before. Sweet, medium mouthfeel, bit of spice character toward the end.

Purchased at the brewery and enjoyed next day. Not sure it is a available near my home but hoping it is. The brewery is next to a university. Not sure how any study is accomplished.

Pours a glowing orange-golden color with a huge, spongy head.

Smells of potato skin, wet grass, crushed corn and a huge impact of soft straw.

Has a perfectly balanced, refreshing, yet smooth mouthfeel with a finely nuanced level of carbonation.

Tastes of an immediate uprising herbal hop dryness, accompanied and balanced by a prominent base layer of straw and white bread dough. Develops a gentle toffee maltiness, which joins in very well, toned down by a soft effervescence, allowing a blend of different grains to cut through. Finishes with a prevailing dryness, light toffee and a grain defined silkness.

Incredibly, how every little nuance in this comes together in perfect fashion, creating a rustic, lightly bitter, bright and complex tasting brew.

As soon as you open this a whiff of something completely different will hit you. That makes this tasting very worthwhile.

It pours golden and slightly hazy. I warmed it a little because I think this style should be drank at a pretty high temperature - almost room temp. The aroma is mild with a unique finishing hops smell that hints of yeast. Very nice.

The taste is a malty subtly hoppy amalgam. It underwhelms, as is true for the style. It's beer, and a really nice one. The aftertaste is a very neutral mouthfeel. I think I could eat anything with this and it would always compliment and never overpower. I guess that's why a lot of crappy American beers are so popular - they don't overpower the food.

This is highly recommend for an authentic German taste.

Weihenstephaner 1516 pours a hazy blonde color, SRM of 4, 30% opaque, with a pillowy 3 finger head that leaves generous lace as it recedes slowly. Creamy float-like appearance on the head. Very nice. 4.25

Aromas of stale grass, hops and fruit peels - orange, banana, strawberry tops; quite a bit of chalky hay aroma as well. 3.5

Hop out front with distinct Munich bitterness, followed by a nice yeasty bready middle, ending again on sharp notes of hay and grass. The harshness of this beer makes it hard to keep drinking and it's bitter without being flavorful. 2.75

Feel is chalky and pasty, but it retains some good carbonation that makes it go down easier. Finish left on palate is not enjoyable, it's sticky and chalky. 3.0

Overall, 1516 was good for a trial but I won't be having this again soon. Did I get an infected sample? May be my first Weihenstephaner drain pour and the weakest Weihenstephaner offering yet...I can't believe how sad I am. At least I'm getting my vitamins. 3.0

500ml bottle. Poured out a cloudy, straw-yellow color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of grains, caramel and hay. Sweet caramel taste with a smooth and subtle bitterness.

On tap at Small Bar, San Diego, poured into a pint glass

Smooth, clean lager from the masters at Weihenstephan. Balanced and as easy to throw back as any light beer, but with an actually balanced and satisfying profile (I don't normally review with such vague descriptors, but this reminds me of how a lot of major beer commercials claim their light brews are supposed to taste). Slightly malt-forward, sweet with husky corn nuances. Earthy hops with a touch of lemon-pepper spice. Toasty, zesty finish with little lingering between sips. I'll hit this again.
