Brewed by:
Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan

Style: German Kristalweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Spring

Notes / Commercial Description:
As the oldest brewery in the world, we are now aiming to focus more attention on our old recipes and rediscover these often exceptional beer types anew – just as we did with our 1516 Kellerbier. The sight of a historical label from the 1950s reminded us of a beer that has almost slipped into oblivion: Kristallweizenbock, still brewed at Weihenstephan all those decades ago, but sought in vain on today’s beer market. Our Weihenstephan master brewers set to work developing a new version of Kristallweizenbock, choosing premium hop varieties Saphir, Opal, Smaragd and Perle (Sapphire, Opal, Emerald and Pearl) to create its character. This combination resulted in the distinctive hoppy bouquet of our Kristallweizenbock, complemented by the subtle banana aroma of the yeast. Careful filtration preserves the beer’s crystal-clear amber glow.

Pours into my Brooklyn/Schneider Hopfen-Weisse glass a clear lemon yellow with a large fluffy bone white head the never completely settles.Yeast phenols of clove and banana with a smoky bacon note coming thru,a clean toasted wheat malt aroma comes thru as well.Vanilla tinged pears and clove flavors stand out up front on the palate with that faint smoke showing thru, rather light for a bigger beer.Honestly I feel like I could drink this all day but the abv. would hit me in the face after awhile, quite delicate.

What a beer. Banana yeasty aroma, taste is similar to the Hef, but the sweetness is more balanced with the bouquet of hops that balances out for a crisper and cleaner finish. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

11.2oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a pale golden with great clarity and transparency and has bubbles racing upwards; big fluffy eggshell white head that sticks around leaving great thick retention and sticky lacing. The aromas are malt forward along with some hints of banana and bubblegum. Some pilsener malts in the mix. The flavors follow the nose. The flavors are extremely clean, crisp and refreshing. It's slightly earthy with a mild bitterness. More hints of banana and bubblegum. Some subtle clove notes in the mix. Malts do their thing without dominating. The yeasts are balanced. Finishes clean. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is great. It's on the fuller side of medium-bodied with active carbonation. It's very fluffy and creamy. Smooth and easy drinking stuff.

This is a great brew. The craftsmanship is very impressive. Once again, this one is very clean, crisp and refreshing. Highly enjoyable stuff. Recommended.

This beer pours a clear gold with a voluminous head. The aroma features roast bananas, clove, nutmeg, toast, vanilla, and orange peel. The flavor is rich and spicy - banana, clove, nutmeg, toast crumbs, cinnamon, cooked fig, vanilla, lemon meringue, orange peel, and blonde tobacco. The mouthfeel is fairly full, with creamy carbonation. Overall this is a fantastic beer - nice fruity and spicy flavor, but balanced and not overwhelming. I think I like this even better than Vitus.

330 ml bottle into weizen glass, bottled on 2/8/2017. Pours crystal clear medium golden yellow color with a 2-3 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with insane retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Insane appearance. Aromas of big banana, bubblegum, lemon, orange, clove, peppercorn, pear, apple, wheat, biscuit, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big banana, bubblegum, lemon, orange, clove, peppercorn, pear, apple, wheat, biscuit, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of banana, bubblegum, lemon, orange, clove, peppercorn, pear, apple, wheat, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance; and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitter/spiciness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium-high carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is an incredible weizenbock! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, easy, and pretty crisp/refreshing to drink. Even with the newer noble hop varieties used, this is nearly just as amazing as Vitus. A highly enjoyable offering.

11.2 oz bottle, date code 4077 (DWWY) puts this somewhere in mid-late Feb 2017.

The head on this explodes as soon as you pour the beer out of the bottle. Bright gold and crystal clear with a massive white head. Patchy lacing on the glass as it goes down. Simply stunning. I'm not sure beers get better looking than this one.

Heavy notes of banana in the aroma. Strong clove as well. Plenty of rich, bready, wheat malt providing a very strong base for the yeast to work off of. Maybe some light floral hops at the end, but they are barely noticeable.

Flavor continues to showcase the malt and yeast. Strong spice and a touch of alcohol heat in the finish. Full bodied with a long-lasting flavor.

A powerful, fruity, spicy masterpiece from Weihenstephaner. But what else did you expect? From their base lineup to their seasonals and one-offs, this brewery consistently spits out world class beers. Last year's 1516 Kellerbier was one of my favorites of the year and this one is no different. A must try when you consider the value for a six-pack.

Pours clear, gold in color with one inch head. Taste is banana, clove, and dark wheat bread. Slightly bitter and hoppy end. Medium bodied, sweet with light dry bitterness, with moderate carbonation. Tasty and super clean. Classic lager..Really happy I picked up a six pack.

12 oz bottle served in a lager glass.
Fine looking: golden-amber body with excellent clarity and a durable white head.
More banana in the aroma and flavor than expected. Hints of light spicing, yeast, and baked bread, with more impact from grains and hops in the aroma than in the mildly bitter taste.

The worlds oldest brewery going back to revive their old, classic styles! Bring it on.

I love the information given about ingrediets on the box. W68 yeast strain and 2nd and third hop additions of: Opal, Smaragd(Emerald) and Sapphire with classic German hops: Hallertauer Perle.

A totally clear, bright golden color, good carbonation supporting a pure-white, sticky and frothy top. Very slow dissipation and plenty of lace.

The nose reminds me very much of the yeast-forward Belgian golden ale's like the Triple and Saison, mixed with the traditional Weizen with sour banana and clove but also showcasing deep vanilla aroma's. A bold, funky, sweet and sour edge. Red fruits, sour citrus and earthy tones of dried wheat. A very unique aroma for a German brew, the hop combo is just an aromatic overload.

The flavor is just outstanding. A blend of fruity tasting hops, excellent depth and charecter of all aspects: The yeast is funky, sour and classically German Weizen style, the hops give off deep fruity and herbal works of art, the malt is slightly bready, honey sweet and full of vanilla and cream aspects. At it's heart is the sour, earthy, dry and refreshing body of golden wheat. The hops, after delivering some excellent fruity flavor's become deeply herbal, spicy and leafy with a big, dry-earthy, semi bitter finish. Like I said, excellent depth and a charming charecter to this hop profile. The deep wheat and sour yeast combo is off the charts good.

The mouthfeel and body is just perfect, a crisp, light bite quickly turns into a much fuller, rounder , lush and smooth feel of a malt dominated body. Slightly slick malt, dry earthy bite and super refreshing for a pretty heady brew of 7.5 % abv. Never does it become boozy or hot. The complexity and depth of charecter really holds back the urge to just crush it. But I could...but it would be a shame to not sip this.

A classic German style, revived with an awesome hop profile and big moder day complexity, executed to perfection by the oldest but still relevant breweries on the planet. Nothing but love for this exceptional creation. Weihenstephaner is , and always has been one of my all time favorite brewers from the old world and with the addition of old but new styles, just solidifies my love for this old/new world classic.

Appearance - Pours crystal clear and bright, golden yellow in color with a white, rocky near two-finger width head. Fair retention results in a thin, broken layer of suds and a thicker ring around the edge of the glass. Not much for lacing aside from a broken line or two and some small spotting.

Smell - Strong aroma of clove and banana. Lesser bubblegum. Light breadiness and maybe even a hint of caramel.

Taste - The flavor does not disappoint. Plenty of clove spice and bubblegum with lesser notes of ripe banana. Faint citrus and apple. Distant caramel can be found toward the end and into the aftertaste, though the 'big three' (clove, banana, bubblegum) notes finish as prominently as they start.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with moderate, bubbly carbonation. Slick, silky smooth texture makes this a stupid easy drinker with a slightly crisp and dry finish.

Overall - Another amazing brew from Weihenstephaner. Complex, harmonic and full-flavored with silky smooth drinkability. I'd be all over this if it weren't $12-13 a sixer. As it is, I'll probably buy another pack and savor it slowly.
