Notes: As the oldest brewery in the world, we are now aiming to focus more attention on our old recipes and rediscover these often exceptional beer types anew – just as we did with our 1516 Kellerbier. The sight of a historical label from the 1950s reminded us of a beer that has almost slipped into oblivion: Kristallweizenbock, still brewed at Weihenstephan all those decades ago, but sought in vain on today’s beer market. Our Weihenstephan master brewers set to work developing a new version of Kristallweizenbock, choosing premium hop varieties Saphir, Opal, Smaragd and Perle (Sapphire, Opal, Emerald and Pearl) to create its character. This combination resulted in the distinctive hoppy bouquet of our Kristallweizenbock, complemented by the subtle banana aroma of the yeast. Careful filtration preserves the beer’s crystal-clear amber glow.

A not-very-careful pour yields pure gold in my glass with four fingers of thick fluff foam which takes a frustratingly long time to die down, leaving chunks of lacing on the way. Tiny bubbles stream up, keeping that fluff stubbornly in place.

Smell is wheat, banana, some clove, some alcohol. Fruity and inviting.

Creamy, creamy mouthfeel. Coats the mouth with banana bread and spice, wheat tang, lingering bitterness on the finish. Some alcohol, but that creaminess makes it oh so easy to drink.

This beer is beautiful in the glass and typically delicious for Weihenstephaner.

330 ml bottle into weizen glass, bottled on 2/8/2017. Pours crystal clear medium golden yellow color with a 2-3 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with insane retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Insane appearance. Aromas of big banana, bubblegum, lemon, orange, clove, peppercorn, pear, apple, wheat, biscuit, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big banana, bubblegum, lemon, orange, clove, peppercorn, pear, apple, wheat, biscuit, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of banana, bubblegum, lemon, orange, clove, peppercorn, pear, apple, wheat, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance; and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitter/spiciness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium-high carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is an incredible weizenbock! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, easy, and pretty crisp/refreshing to drink. Even with the newer noble hop varieties used, this is nearly just as amazing as Vitus. A highly enjoyable offering.

What a beer. Banana yeasty aroma, taste is similar to the Hef, but the sweetness is more balanced with the bouquet of hops that balances out for a crisper and cleaner finish. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

This beer pours a clear gold with a voluminous head. The aroma features roast bananas, clove, nutmeg, toast, vanilla, and orange peel. The flavor is rich and spicy - banana, clove, nutmeg, toast crumbs, cinnamon, cooked fig, vanilla, lemon meringue, orange peel, and blonde tobacco. The mouthfeel is fairly full, with creamy carbonation. Overall this is a fantastic beer - nice fruity and spicy flavor, but balanced and not overwhelming. I think I like this even better than Vitus.

Pours into my Brooklyn/Schneider Hopfen-Weisse glass a clear lemon yellow with a large fluffy bone white head the never completely settles.Yeast phenols of clove and banana with a smoky bacon note coming thru,a clean toasted wheat malt aroma comes thru as well.Vanilla tinged pears and clove flavors stand out up front on the palate with that faint smoke showing thru, rather light for a bigger beer.Honestly I feel like I could drink this all day but the abv. would hit me in the face after awhile, quite delicate.

11.2 oz bottle, date code 4077 (DWWY) puts this somewhere in mid-late Feb 2017.

The head on this explodes as soon as you pour the beer out of the bottle. Bright gold and crystal clear with a massive white head. Patchy lacing on the glass as it goes down. Simply stunning. I'm not sure beers get better looking than this one.

Heavy notes of banana in the aroma. Strong clove as well. Plenty of rich, bready, wheat malt providing a very strong base for the yeast to work off of. Maybe some light floral hops at the end, but they are barely noticeable.

Flavor continues to showcase the malt and yeast. Strong spice and a touch of alcohol heat in the finish. Full bodied with a long-lasting flavor.

A powerful, fruity, spicy masterpiece from Weihenstephaner. But what else did you expect? From their base lineup to their seasonals and one-offs, this brewery consistently spits out world class beers. Last year's 1516 Kellerbier was one of my favorites of the year and this one is no different. A must try when you consider the value for a six-pack.

11.2oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a pale golden with great clarity and transparency and has bubbles racing upwards; big fluffy eggshell white head that sticks around leaving great thick retention and sticky lacing. The aromas are malt forward along with some hints of banana and bubblegum. Some pilsener malts in the mix. The flavors follow the nose. The flavors are extremely clean, crisp and refreshing. It's slightly earthy with a mild bitterness. More hints of banana and bubblegum. Some subtle clove notes in the mix. Malts do their thing without dominating. The yeasts are balanced. Finishes clean. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is great. It's on the fuller side of medium-bodied with active carbonation. It's very fluffy and creamy. Smooth and easy drinking stuff.

This is a great brew. The craftsmanship is very impressive. Once again, this one is very clean, crisp and refreshing. Highly enjoyable stuff. Recommended.

This is an imported beer to the U.S.
The back label says "8067 13:54:38"

Appearance: The beer is a brilliantly bright shade of gold with crystal clarity and a large fluffy, creamy, white head. There are tons of visible carbonation. It has great retention and lacing. It looks perfect.

Aroma: There is a light spicy clove scent with some bubblegum aroma.

Taste: The flavors closely match the aroma. It has a mellowed out clove taste with a touch of bubblegum and some dull caramel flavor.

Mouthfeel: It is light with a bit of a chewiness to it. It has a semi-clean wet finish.

Overall: It's a decent beer but it tastes like it has a bit of age on it. I would probably only get it again if I could get it someplace in Europe or freshly imported in a keg. As an import it's still a decent beer but it isn't one I would strongly recommend.

Initial impression from a bottle:

APPEARANCE: White head fills a good 90% of my weissbierglas, boasting excellent retention (~10 minutes). Frothy as they come, and soft in appearance. Body is a clear filtered yellow of good vibrance. No yeast(s)/lees are visible within. Clean and appealing, appearing well-carbonated and lively.

AROMA: Fresh wheat. Floral and grassy hops (Noble). Pilsner malt. Soft water. Minerals. Banana esters.

Suggests an ideally attenuated weizenbock. I suspect ale yeast was used given the banana esters.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Remarkably soft and refreshing. Smooth, wet, light-bodied. Perfect carbonation.

Fresh pilsner malt and wheat comprise the malt backbone, balanced by floral and grassy hop character (Noble hops are indicated). Balance is impeccable, and depth of flavour is above average. Banana esters from the German yeast reveal a classic Weihenstephaner flavour.

Apt flavour duration and intensity. Mellow and approachable. Pleasant and enjoyable. A complex yet subtly executed expression of a weizenbock.

OVERALL: Ludicrously drinkable, Kristall weizenbock is another treat of a beer from one of Germany's finest breweries. It'd be so easy for Weihenstephaner to just milk the oldest brewery angle for marketing gimmickry, but they continue churning out these inspired incredible beers. I already want another sixer of this and would happily revisit it - especially when it's priced at $8.00 USD per six pack here in Colorado. A must-try from a great brewery.

B+ (3.93) / VERY GOOD

***
06.04.17 impression:

Spritzy and crisp, emphasizing the clove and banana esters of Weihenstephaner yeast. Grassy Noble hops duel with refreshing pilsner malts to good effect, but possibly at the expense of the wheat.

Refreshing, approachable, and pleasant to drink, never betraying its 7.50% ABV.

B / GOOD

Look....quite clear, sparkling, enjoy the head and lace, Golden hues.
Smell....cloves...yes we have bananas.
Taste....simply marvelous..for a 7.5 on the alcohol scale, it is hidden quite well.
Feel....it feels like another one. A nice roll of the pallet and crisp n smooth goin down.
Overall.... started out like a hefeweizen, but not nearly as complicated. Just let me be with a six , wish it were a little cheaper..16. something here in Michigan.

A: Pours brilliantly clear dark straw with an insanely foamy bone white head that stays a quarter inch thick in this Special Edition Weihenstephaner stange. Laces exceptionally well.

A: Smells of banana, soap, crackers, even a hint of leather and a floral and grassy finish.

T: Light toast and banana dominate at first, followed closely by floral and spiced hop goodness. Hominy in the aftertaste as it warms.

F: Pretty well balanced. I'm on my second one now, and believed it to be sweet the first time around, but am definitely sensing the earthy bitterness taking shape now. Insane that this is 7.5% abv, as it feels almost as light and crisp as a pilsner.

O: Despite the positive review, I don't think I'll buy another six pack of this. It was fun to try and enjoyable, but overall... Just not quite my thing. Prost!
