Initial reaction to a bottle from a sixer:

11.2 fl oz format. Brown glass. Branded (Weihenstephaner) pry-off crown cap. Artful label.

6.0% ABV. "Bavarian style." "Hefe weissbier."

Served cold into a weizenglas.

HEAD: Occupies ~60% of the glass. Neither as creamy nor as frothy as most good traditional expressions of the style (including Weihenstephaner's original). Retention is alright; this recedes to ~10% of the glass within 30 seconds and what's left of the head sticks around for only a couple minutes. Leaves bits of lacing on the sides of the glass.

BODY: Murky and dull. Copper-orange in colour, with some cloudiness but not the style's signature haze. Could be brighter and more vibrant. I see no yeast/lees within, but I do find some at the bottom of the bottle though I swirled before pouring off the last of it. Odd.

Not a great appearance for a hefeweizen, let alone one Weihenstephaner is involved with. Dull and drab in comparison to the likes of Ayinger, Erdinger, Schneider Weiss, or even Franziskaner.

AROMA: Baked bread. Clove. Wheat. That's it really...maybe some 2-row sweetness.

I'm not finding any bubblegum phenol, vanilla, or orange peel. Lacks any floral hop aromatics. Wheat could be fresher and fuller.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE: Baked bread, wheat, and a hint of clove round out this ostensible hefeweizen. I'm not finding the yeasty complexity you'd get in a great expression of the style, and the wheat backbone doesn't taste as fresh or full as would be ideal. Not as refreshing as it ought to be as a result.

Whatever the hops Sierra Nevada was trying to showcase here were, they're not coming through.

Lacks the depth of flavour and balance a great hefeweizen should boast. It's not bad by any means, but it lacks a traditional Bavarian yeast profile as well as any discernable hop flavour, which seems like the opposite of what the brewers were after. I wouldn't know this used Weihenstephaner's house yeast if I tried it blind, and that's a problem.

TEXTURE: Could be softer, creamier, and more refreshing. Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, and well-carbonated. Doesn't feel fresh.

OVERALL: I adore many beers from both breweries involved, but for me this is a real dud. The yeast flavour critical in a hefeweizen just isn't there, and it lacks the fresh wheat backbone that's the bedrock of the style. I'm on my third bottle of the sixer I bought now, and each time I've hoped to find in it what so many other fans of the breweries involved have. It pains me to say it, but this emperor has no clothes.

So, stumbled on this new collab today and couldn't pass it up. Weizen isn't necessarily my favorite German style, but I do enjoy it now and again -- adding SN to the mix ought to prove interesting.

Poured into my Libbey Weizen glass from the usual Weihenstephaner brown bottle -- with the unusual Brummbär label.

L -- Hazy peach color with a dense, foamy, long-lasting white head.

S -- Mellow, peach to grapefruit citrus aromas with Weizen yeast banana character lingering back. Quite interesting and appetizing.

T -- Clove spiciness up front with a dose of herbal bitterness followed in concert by wheat malt, light citrus and bubblegum/banana flavors and finishing with a spicy, herbal bitterness that folds into the aftertaste.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft and creamy with a medium (almost medium-full) body.

O -- People are always espousing innovation in weird concept beers these days, but I think Sierra Nevada and Weihenstephaner have hit it out of the park with this one. The balance of the Weizen yeast and American hops is far more interesting than I was expecting and seem made for each other. The love child of a West Coast IPA and a Bavarian Weizen with the best characteristics of both styles.

The cloudy golden orange beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 2 1/2” finely bubbled fluffy white head that recedes very slowly leaving lots of lacing that clings to the sides of the glass. Sipping clears the side a bit but leaves some patches and legs of lacing.

The aromas include some stone fruits (peach, apricot), some wheat, some citrus, a bit of caramel, along with the expected spicy clove and banana which are both in the background.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose with the citrus, stone fruits, some very light clove and banana. There’s also some caramel sweetness that is nicely balanced by a light citric and earthy bitterness.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and creamy smooth with the finely bubbled, persistent and gentle carbonation. The finish begins as the sweetness, fruits and spice recede allowing some light pine, citric and herbal bitterness to bring things to a close in the semi-dry ending. The ending goes on for a long time and seems to have just a light touch of banana and clove that persists in the back of the mouth along with the light earthy bitterness.

I’m enjoying this beer and glad to have more waiting in the fridge so I can have more. The aroma/flavor profile is fairly complex and filled with elements of both the hefeweizen yeast and the hop bill that includes some American hops. It’s a shame that this one is a one-off brewing that we’ll not see brewed again since it’s such a nice example of what a collaboration between two different brewing traditions can produce.

Had this on 2018-04-12 in Bolingbrook, IL from a fresh 11.2oz bottle.

A - Hazy gold-orange with a 3-finger pillowy white head that sticks around leaving lots of lace.

S - Banana bread, clove, grassy and herbal

T - Starts off like a traditional Hefe but almost right away there's a tasty snap of American hop flavor with some citrus, earthy spice and pepper. This blends really well with the banana bread and clove flavors. Finishes dry with a good residue of all these flavors plus mild-moderate bitterness not found in a Hefe.

M - Medium body and carbonation. On the creamy side.

O - I've never had a beer like this. You wouldn't think the marriage of a Hefe and American Hops would work; but it does. I don't often reach for a Hefe but would do some more if this is what was available. Good stuff

This is the best damn hefeweisen I have ever had. I like it a lot better than Weihenstephan's original hefeweissbier and perhaps it's due to the month old freshness or Sierra Nevada's hops or perhaps a little bit of both but this is damn well delicious!

Served at 45 degrees in Stella Artois chalice glass:

L: hazy orange, egg yoak, caramel with 3-4 inches of creamy, foamy head

A: Bananas and sugar

F: Creamy and smooth, light to medium. Super rich sweetness, slightly hoppy backbone and easy drinking but you hold back as you want to cherish it.

T: Bananas, citrusy lemon zest, caramel, burnt sugar, banana bread pudding, apricot, and peaches.

O: As said earlier in the review this is the best damn hefeweisen I have ever had. Cheers to a damn good collaboration, can't wait for the Oktoberfest!

Appearance - Pours hazy and rustic orange in color with a frothy, off-white, two finger width head. Excellent retention, resulting in a thick layer of suds with a thicken up even more as it crowds around the edge of the glass. Strong lacing that cascades into layers of broken sheeting, broken lines and small spotting.

Smell - Spicy clove, banana, and phenolic bubblegum character. Everything you want and expect in a hefe, and it's

Taste - Follows the nose. Spicy clove and banana hit the tongue first, then a bit of yeasty bubble gum comes through. Mid-taste brings a mild floral presence, apple-ish esters and just a faint trace of citrus after the brew warms. Finish is mostly a fading clove spice and citrusy zest with the other aforementioned flavors lending support.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium in body with a fair amount of tingly carbonation. Slick and velvety texture makes this a smooth, dreamy drinker.

Overall - What do you get when one of best hefe brewers in the world collaborates with the US brewery that might make the finest hefe in the states? An instant classic. Wonderfully balanced and spiced with subtle nuances that tie the whole flavor experience together. Quite refreshing on this warm, mid-spring day.

A- pours a hazy golden orange color with a creamy white head that has good retention and leaves lots of lacing behind.

S- toasted wheat, peppery and spicy yeast, clove, banana, light fruity hops

T- spicy and peppery yeast gives off flavors of banana, clove & some phenolic notes. Mid-palate gives some earthy elements, as well as a bit of fruity hops. The finish is of toasted wheat, peppery clove and Belgian yeast

M- medium body with medium carbonation leads to an unfiltered mouthfeel and a creamy crisp finish

O- I had high expectations and it didn't disappoint. The worlds best hefe brewer does it again

Poured bottle into Weizen glass. It is a very hazy straw colored with a 3 finger foamy white head that coats my glass with lacing. A nice fermented wheat aroma with a fruity bouquet, banana, and a pinch of light citrus and clove. Taste is similar with a nice fruity and banana profile, hints of citrus on the wheat base. Easy to drink lighter style that is very tasty, the foamy head is like whipped cream. This is gotdamed delicious!

Pours a hazy burnt orange color with a lustrous, soapy off-white head. Aromas are to style, with spicy clove and sweet banana notes dominant, and beyond style, with subtle citrus and pine notes from the Amarillo and Chinook hops. Full-on salivation mode.

The taste ..... is exquisite. The banana and spicy clove notes are very present, and they dance in unison with the citrus and pine notes from the hops. There is no competition here: these are truly partners.

Old world meets new school when it comes to brewing as Sierra Nevada teams up with Weihenstephaner for a classic Bavarian wheat beer taste but with a racy American hopped attitude.

This coming together of beer minds is dubbed Braupakt and it pours the classic hefeweizen pour, cloudy golden and topped with a rich and frothy meringue. Citrus and herb add a Pacific Northwest complement to the normal orchard, tropical and citrus notes of the beer and also its soft spiciness. Bready sweet on the tongue, the early palate is a rounded taste of fresh bread, cookie dough and a pep of honey.

As the middle palate is awash with wheat malt, the hops skirt just above with its strong grapefruit, orange peel and piney spice. But the natural estery fruitiness still applies its own banana, lemon and apple favors in support of the American hops. And that subtle spice comes with a clove, white pepper and vanilla medley for both balance and complexity. A fine grassiness with hints of mint, spruce and ginger tease the late palate as the trends crisp and clean deep into the session.

Medium bodied, the beer's early and wheaten creaminess endures the session even as the resinous hops attempt to dry the palate unabashedly. A medium length aftertaste of ground pine needles, fresh grass clippings and pepper outlasts many of the hefeweizen's common attributes except for a gently rolling echo of sourdough afterwards.

Enjoyed on draft from a shaker pint glass. Dark, clouded orange with a half-finger of head. The general impression I got is of a fuller-bodied hefe with an orange slice served on the glass, even though there was no orange slice. The citrus flavor was quite strong, to the point of clashing a bit with the delicate hefeweizen notes. Also had a bit of a sharp edge to the finish that's common to good beers of the style but didn't really complement the rest of the flavor profile for me.

This is a spectacular beer. I loved the 1516 and thought the unfiltered Vitus was solid, but this beer is marvelous. It's not the same beer unfiltered; it's like the regular hefe but different and in a really interesting way with the Chinook/Amarillo hops. I will admit I was a little skeptical (SN adds hops to classic beer = less than amazing) but the hop choice was perfect.

This beer was exactly what I hoped it would be: a mix of the old world and the new. Pronounced west coast hops took well to the yeast, hay, banana, and clove flavors without overpowering them. Makes the hefeweizen crisper and have a tiny hint of citrus too.

Pours into a weizen glass a ruddy brown infused lemon color with a large fluffy egg shell-like head that settles into a creamy mass leaving multiple broken rings of lace behind.Toasted wheat malts,earth,and mild spice phenols in the nose,quite an earthy punch.Toasted wheat,clove and banana flavors stand out most with a bit of an earthy tinge in the finish.I don't get a hug left coast hop presence like others do but this is a nice 'hefty' hefe weizen.

Pours a lovely, hazy gold with a massive, long lasting and creamy snow-white head.
The aroma is banana, clove, a hint of lemon and some floral notes. A touch of cracker.
Taste is banana and clove and some citrus pith and a little pine. The slight bitter snap nicely balances the sweetness.
Mouthfeel is creamy with a tingly carbonation.
This is a beautiful collaboration with the American hops melding perfectly with the traditional Hefe. Great stuff.

Pours opaque, orange-gold in color with one inch head. Taste is banana, clove, wheat, and some earthy hops at the end. Medium bodied, moderate-high carbonation, sweet, creamy with a slightly bitter end. Another amazing wheat beer with a touch of hoppiness. Just the excellence I would expect from a collaboration between these two breweries.

Served on tap. Pours a cloudy toffee colour. Banana yeasts, and notes of bittering hops on the nose. Crisp carbonation, balanced and mellow body. Belgian fruity yeasts upfront and midbody : banana and clove, a hint of lemon rind and apricot, with a semi bitter lingering hop finish.

Light brown to dark gold and plenty turbid in appearance with a meager amount of light seeping through the body. There's a solid inch and a half of densely packed, creamy beige head. There's a rich aroma of banana and pale wheat. I'm tasting plenty of banana, pale wheat, and some bitter grassy and definitely American hops round out the back of the palate. The mouth is light, creamy, and refreshing.
