Weihenstephaner VitusWeihenstephaner Vitus

Brewed by:
Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan

Style: Weizenbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our light-coloured, spicy single-bock, “Vitus” is saturated with fine yeast and a creamy foam. It is a specialty with a round character based on the extra long storage time. The fruity smell of dried apricots joins aromas of citrus, cloves and hints of banana. Full-bodied and sparkling with an effervescent mouthfeel. Thus, the Vitus does not taste like a typical Bock beer but more like a noble, fruity wheat beer. Perfect with red meat, strong cheese and also able to guide desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

L: Gives of a hazy deep yellow color. Nice creamy top of head when I pour in the glass. Nice sticky lacings on the glass.

S: banana ripes, citrus, cloves, peppercorn and honey.

T&F: a great creamy mouthfeel is my first impression. Fruity with the flavour of banana and citrus with the sugary taste from the sweet yeast, the spices gets noticeable in the middle with cloves, peppers and other spices. Finish of dry with a sightly bitterness in the aftertaste . Alcohol content is so well hidden in the flavour

O: what else is it to say. This is a delicious and an amazing beer. Enjoyed it to the last drop. I sure would not miss one of those again

Yields a hazed yellow-amber color with a creamy white head, which falls down to a fluffy lacing atop the surface.

Smells juicy of lusciously ripe bananas, sugared cereals and a soft spice pillow. Clove and wooden vanilla among white peppers build the yeast soothed spice profile in this.

Mouthfeel is velvet and soft, although the carbonation is at a medium level with a refreshing, vivid finish.

Tastes of ripe bananas, fresh cut grass, dried orange zest and spicy, soft yeast. Its spiciness is quite profound, while maintaining well entangled into the soothing yeast, calming peppers, clove and allspice. Finishes with moderate spices, white bread rind and toffee, pretty light once the spices recede.

Sweet and refreshing at the same time, very pleasant to drink due to the astonishing balance, I kinda miss some additional depth, justifying the higher abv on this.

Murky pale straw color, good amount of head & carbonation. I got lots of ripe banana on the nose - smells like banana bread, essentially - along with some slightly robust esthers & clove. Very fruity on the tongue - primarily banana again but with some candied dates and dark fruit (the esthers again). Definitely lighter for a bock beer, which threw me a tad at first, but overall good. I'm not too much of a spice / esthers guy so it had a ceiling for me.

On tap at BC's Pizza & Beer

A: Pours slightly hazy golden straw with a frothy white head that settles to a thin layer and leaves some nice lacing.

S: Spicy, fruity, faint citrus, a bit yeasty, wheat, and a touch of sweetness.

T: Spicy, fruity, banana, pear, clove, coriander, a touch of citrus, floral, yeasty, a little wheat twang, and a touch of sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: Drinks kinda like an amped up hef. Very nice.

L - yellow thick body with thumb size white head that doesn't last long
S - banana, buscuit, yeast citrusy
T - same as the smell.
F - light coat of the mouth. Very low carbonation, really smooth
O - this is a really good beer. Defiantly one of my favorites. Super smooth beer with a lot of flavor. The more I drink of this the more I like it. I have to keep increasing my ratings on this beer.

Poured 16.9oz bottle into snifter glass. 7.7% abv

Appearance- Pours a glowingly bright goldenrod yellow with a massive finely bubbled foam head. Very slow to dissipate. Hazy, turbid, and cloudy in terms of clarity.

Smell- Wheat, lemon, apricot.

Taste- Flavorful wheat malt with a fine grainy flavor. Becomes more citric, with sharp notes of lemon, and some duller, lighter apricot flavors intertwined. Has the banana flavor as well which blends well with the strong wheat malt base. Finishes semi dry, slightly bitter and a clove like finish.

Mouthfeel- Medium in body with active carbonation.

Overall- This beer is insanely drinkable. It is so hard to believe it is 7.7%. One of the smoothest 7%+ beer if not the smoothest. Quite complex yet satisfying. Truly outstanding. A must try.

Look: Pours a cloudy orange yellow with a two finger cream colored head. Good retention, poor lacing on the glass.

Smell: Aromas of malted wheat, banana, honey, clove, bubblegum, tangerine and mild vanilla.

Taste: Exceptionally rich. Flavors of creamy malted wheat and oats thats slightly tart, amongst notes of mild cinnamon, clove, banana and bubblegum coming from the bavarian yeast. Finishes bittersweet with a mild bitter tropical fruit pith taste among more notes of pie crust, spice and creamy grains.

Feel: Dry upfront and quite yeasty. Alcohol is not detectable. Medium body, mildly carbonated.

Overall: Another gem from Weihenstephaner brewery.

Poured into a Pint Defiance tulip. The body is a cloudy yellow with a finger creamy white head. Aromas consist of bubblegum, clove, banana, and biscuity malts. Flavors consist of the same, and the beer is dry. The feel is medium bodied with medium carbonation with a bit mineral quality.

11.2oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy pale golden; fluffy creamy eggshell white head that sticks around leaving great retention and very sticky lacing. The aromas are full of sweet yeast. Lots of fresh banana and bubblegum. Some German hop notes in the mix as well. The flavors follow the nose perfectly. Banana and bubblegum lead the way with cloves too. Citrus notes are in the mix. Subtle hop bitterness. Slightly earthy. Malts are there giving it a touch of sweetness. Finishes clean. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is great. It's medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's very fluffy, creamy and smooth. Dangerously drinkable.

This is a classic brew. It's very refreshing and fun to drink. The craftsmanship is very impressive. Recommended.

Had a small bottle of this and wish I had gotten another. It is that good.

I'm not the most well-educated on German beers but was everything I love from Weihenstenhaner and more.

L - Blonde with thick head
S - Banana/wheat dominate the smell
T - As above the banana and wheat make the beer. Alcohol is not as apparent and just follows along
F - Very nice carbonation and kind of light-bodied.

Overall I will continue to expand my German beer drinking history because of this company.

500 ml bottle into a flute glass.

Pours a fairly hazy bright yellow, with a two finger head and lots of foamy lacing. Smell is yeast, light malt, a little banana, straw, a wheaty or grainy aroma, some black pepper and clove. The taste also leads with the yeast, then malt, banana, wheat, straw, a little bread, light lemon. Slight hop bitterness throughout. Very smooth, refreshing, solid body.

A classic, like most of this brewery's beers. The kind of beer you could have every day and not get tired of it. Reasonably priced, too.

This weizenbock pours a fairly pale yellow color with a somewhat thick, frothy white head that dissipates quickly, but not quite as much so as most German beers. The smell is mostly of wheat with maybe a little banana. The body is light and very crisp and refreshing. The flavors are a mainly a malty bread and wheat. The aftertaste imparts some definite clove / black pepper spice and a little bit of fruitiness also with hints of banana. This is a nice well rounded beer that’s light but imparts some definite flavor punch in the aftertaste. The alcohol is pretty subdued considering it’s 7.7%. It’s definitely well deserving of the praise it gets, but I personally prefer this brewery’s hefes a little more because I think they exhibit more fullness of flavor in the initial taste and because I think this could use little more body. As the this beer warms up a little bit it’s flavor changes noticeably with the banana and malt flavors really coming out a little bit more. I definitely prefer it when this beer is cool rather than cold.

500ml bottle poured into a weizen glass.

Hazy yellow straw in color, thick white frothy head builds up and stands with good retention before leaving everlasting foamy crown on the surface along with lots of sticky lacing on the glass-side.

Fruity ester pokes through with a ripe banana and citrus notes. Bubblegum, phenolic spice, clove, malt with a scent of sweet banana bread follow up closely. The overall aroma is super well mellow and inviting.

Fruitiness affair in your mouth by the yeast, led by banana and followed by citrus, phenolic spice and clove also find their way to unfold with a moderate pinch through the taste buds. Sweetness sweeps all over the palate by a solid malty backbone with a bread and biscuit quality. You can get hop at the almost end with a vague hint of bitterness and slight citrus.

Medium body with lively carbonation that yields a feel of smoothness through the mouthfeel and refreshment through the palate, finish is dry.

I have no word to describe how great it is. This beer has evil quaffable quality. It is so tasty and I found myself couldn’t stop sipping more and more. Alcohol is there too but completely concealed under its greatness.

L: Gorgeous amber with very tiny carbonation bubbles and foam that subsides to a visible, white lacing around the edge of the glass.

S: Apricot.peachy fruits, banana and clove not far off from a hefe, yeastyness

T: Malt first, followed by bold spiciness like clove, interesting mix of bitter and sweet.

F: light, easy drinking, beer foams up on your palate

O: Good choice. When someone says "traditional beer" even though the style may not be so, all the flavors are there. No fruit additives, no whiskey barrel aging, no crazy hop profile, just a flavorful wheat beer.

Not a huge wheat beer fan, though not averse to it.. that being said this is on of the better ones I've had. Also worth noting I've not had the Weihenstephaner Hefe yet.

L : Golden, Hazy

S: Typical of what a wheat beer smells, quite nice. A subdued fruity/yeast smell.

T: Somewhat sharp , wheaty yeast flavor pretty much spot on to the brewers description. Citrus/Clove/Bananas, not overpowering and quite pleasant. A bit of heat from the alcohol is also notable and also pleasant. The best tasting wheat beer I've had so far for sure.

F: Very crisp, sharp, refreshing. Very drinkable despite its strength.

O: Excellent beer. Not an expert on wheats but this surely up there with the best. Usually i can only handle one or two wheats in a sitting but i could see an evening drinking only this if the mood struck me.

Hazy bright yellow straw color with a foamy white head. To me, the banana dominated the nose, but also nice clove, some fruit, and some bread. Taste is big, featuring orange, apricot, banana, clove, and bready malt. Lively carbonation and a dry finish.

Big head. Glorious slightly cloudy blonde in the light. Clearly contains wheat and its specialized yeast giving us those fruity, banana aromatics. Taste is close to "Wow" and very refreshing (particularly after riding my bike.)
Once the bubbly recedes, it is a nice calming beverage that balances the fruit with just enough spice to finish.
Listed in the "1001 Beers To Taste Before You Die", this beer deserves it.
And we deserve it.
I have two sets of notes, and I will have it at least a fourth time before I die... despite the competition.
