Brewed by:
Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan

Style: Weizenbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our light-coloured, spicy single-bock, “Vitus” is saturated with fine yeast and a creamy foam. It is a specialty with a round character based on the extra long storage time. The fruity smell of dried apricots joins aromas of citrus, cloves and hints of banana. Full-bodied and sparkling with an effervescent mouthfeel. Thus, the Vitus does not taste like a typical Bock beer but more like a noble, fruity wheat beer. Perfect with red meat, strong cheese and also able to guide desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

This beer pours with a huge, fluffy, white head that dissipates fairly quickly. The head dies down releatively quickly to a nice white topping the beer. The beer itself is a lovely golden hay color. The nose is what I would expect from a Weihenstephan beer, very estery, lots of banana, but also with lots of darker (think candied) fruit smells.

The taste is light and wheaty, for a 7.7% alc beer, this is really really well hidden alc, not boozy at all. The beer has a fairly nondescript flavor, its a little bit sweet up front (no hop bitterness at all) and has a quite sweet aftertaste too.

The mouthfeel here is great, very wheaty and full on the palate.

This is a very interesting beer, I think I prefer the straight up Hefeweizen from Weihenstephan better, but this is a tasty example of a style that is hard to find.

Hazy, yellow color with a one-finger frothy white head. Wonderful aroma of citrus, banana, and clove. The taste is right in line with the smell. Strong yeast flavors that really bring out the banana and spice. Medium bodied and the carbonation was spot on. Dry finish. A delicious beer - very similar to Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier - that is worth picking up if you see it on the shelves.

Had this a few times and am a big fan, wanted to do a full review to see how the score holds up. Outstanding looking beer, although not quite to the level of Hefe or Dunkel. Pretty much the same with the smell and taste, very similar but not quite the same, but still very high quality. Overall this is a beer I like very much but have a hard time taking it over the Hefe or Dunkel.
