Style: Weizenbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our light-coloured, spicy single-bock, “Vitus” is saturated with fine yeast and a creamy foam. It is a specialty with a round character based on the extra long storage time. The fruity smell of dried apricots joins aromas of citrus, cloves and hints of banana. Full-bodied and sparkling with an effervescent mouthfeel. Thus, the Vitus does not taste like a typical Bock beer but more like a noble, fruity wheat beer. Perfect with red meat, strong cheese and also able to guide desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Slightly hazy golden orange color with Lots of bubbles going up to feed a thick head resulting in a very good retention.
Traditional aroma of banana and cloves, but with hints of liquor and bubble gum.
Spicy and relatively malty flavor with notes of cloves, lemon, toasted malts, wheat and banana. Hints of citrus, honey and bubble gum. Dry aftertaste.
Medium body with good carbonation, 7.7% ABV is well hidden.
It is like a tuned-up Hefeweizen on booze and toasted malts. Very, very good. Let it warm up a bit and welcome to first class.

16.9 oz bottle poured into my snifter. Every beer store around here seems to carry Weihenstephaner, but never Vitus, so I'm glad I got to try it finally.

A - good looking beer, super light, big head on the forced pour. An inch or two of foam recedes slowly. Settles deep yellow and light brown in the glass. Cloudy on the pour, even more opaque in the glass.

S - Sweet, sticky notes on the nose. I have a difficult time discerning the smells here, but there's a distinctive sourness on the end of the nose, fruity, yet viscous. Not altogether pleasant though.

T - I'm not too sure about this. Some of the sweet notes get lost in the acidity. The yeast strain is awfully similar to some American-made Belgian pales I've had, which I'm not a huge fan of. I do get some of the bubblegum that other reviewers described. Wheaty.

M - decent, a little sour and acidic. The alcohol doesn't really play a role here.

O - I'm not a huge fan of Weihenstephaner beers, but I think that it just must be the beer styles, lagers, whatever, that I don't like. Because I can tell that this is exemplary of its style. Flavorful and a full bouquet, but not my cup of tea.

A: Poured a hazy yellow color with a thick, fluffy white head that dies down to a thin line of bubbles.

S: Banana, bubblegum, alcohol, wheat, and citrus.

T: Initial flavor is sweet and with a good bit of clove spice and citrus. The bubblegum type fruit flavors kick in and ride with the citrus and spice into the finish. The finish is sweet with a good bit of burn and a very slight hop flavor.

M: Medium to big body. Very smooth feel to it. For being 7.7% it is easy to drink. Very refreshing feel to it with the higher carbonation.

O: A very good representation of the style
