Style: Weizenbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our light-coloured, spicy single-bock, “Vitus” is saturated with fine yeast and a creamy foam. It is a specialty with a round character based on the extra long storage time. The fruity smell of dried apricots joins aromas of citrus, cloves and hints of banana. Full-bodied and sparkling with an effervescent mouthfeel. Thus, the Vitus does not taste like a typical Bock beer but more like a noble, fruity wheat beer. Perfect with red meat, strong cheese and also able to guide desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

bottle into tulip

appearance: golden pale yellow with 2 finger white head

smell: coriander, wheat, cloves, citrus, lemon, dark fruits

taste: Amazingly balanced and refreshing, getting lot's of coriander and citrus notes, tastes a lot similar to the hefeweizen, just not as much banana.

mouthfeel: highly carbonated, medium bodied

overall: Weihenstepehaner is one of the worlds gerat breweries, never had a bad beer from them. This is basically a stronger version of their Hefe , absolutely phenomenal.

Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with a frothy white head that slowly dissipates.

Peach, orange, coriander, wheat, and yeast form the initial aroma. Lemon and banana become evident, along with confectioners sugar sweetness and floral notes.

Flavor reveals more of the peach character, becoming sharply lemon and orange pith. Wheat weaves throughout, but the finish is fairly bready and a touch earthy. Notes of banana and clove surface late. Lots of great esters, but the malt backbone is substantial.

Body is moderate, with high, prickly carbonation. There's slight alcohol warmth.

So much estery flavoring, but the malt backbone balances excellently. Very refreshing, and hides the high alcohol content well until the warmth settles in. Wheat beers aren't my favorite, but this is delicious.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Weizen glass.

Appearance: Hazy burnt orange with initially towering white head that mostly recedes.

Smell: Banana, clove and ripe fruit.

Taste: Semi-sweet core of ripe banana, other ripe darker fruits and wheat. The clove is noticeable on the finish, along with lingering fruit and some spiciness.

Feel: Medium to full body that is very creamy and smooth. Finish dries up slightly.

Overall: Nice balanced Weizenbock, but the ripe darker fruits contribute a slight sickly flavor that keeps this from being as first class as I expected.

Pours hazy gold with any amount of head you want. My first pour was gentle and only yielded about one finger. Next pour was stronger and was 4 fingers. The head has great staying power. The lacings were alright but not as impressive as the head and retention.
Smell is banana and clove. A hint of bubblegum.
Taste is spicy cloves banana with some bubblegum on the back edges of the tongue.
Mouthfeel is medium with enough carbonation to enhance the flavors.
Overall another winner from this remarkable brewery. Not a style I enjoy as a rule but this example won me over. The alcohol was not prominent but it had an effect for sure.

A-I guess the label made me think this was going to be a dark beer. This is a rather bright, albeit cloudy hay color. Big, bubbly and frothy head. Coats of lacing.

S-Very spicy. Intense, nearly hot, clove aroma. Intricate yeastiness. Peppery. Hints of bubblegum and banana but mostly spicy and voraciously yeasty.

T-The flavor is more amiable. Its far sweeter, too. I get some sweet banana or even tapioca pudding with some boozy heat. Cloves are dialed back a bit. A tangy wheatiness finishes every sip. Light apples and pears. Complex and as the beer warms it slowly shape shifts.

M-The booze pops up but its no surprise. Smooth bubbles. Sweet middle but it finishes rather dry.

O/D-A neat beer. I had no idea what Vitus had in store for me. I found it to be pretty unique. Like a Belgian Strong Pale Ale or even a Tripel but I find the wheat base to balance and smooth out the flavors. Well worth a try at less than $3 a bottle.

a - poured a four-fingers thick white head into a weizen glass. the head was dense, rocky, billowy and long-lasting that left thick lacing and sheeting throughout. the body was a bright golden color with tons of bubbles.
s - big banana and clove aromas balanced out by wheat.
t - clove, wheat, bananas and other fruits.
m - this is stupendous. medium thickness and velvety smooth with a crisp finish.
o - first time having vitus and i'll be seeking it out again. so drinkable and flavorful. the mouthfeel is as good as it gets.
