Our light-coloured, spicy single-bock, “Vitus” is saturated with fine yeast and a creamy foam. It is a specialty with a round character based on the extra long storage time. The fruity smell of dried apricots joins aromas of citrus, cloves and hints of banana. Full-bodied and sparkling with an effervescent mouthfeel. Thus, the Vitus does not taste like a typical Bock beer but more like a noble, fruity wheat beer. Perfect with red meat, strong cheese and also able to guide desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

500ml bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Not at all what I was expecting based on prior experience with weizenbocks, this beer looks exactly like Duvel in the tulip: pale gold body up to the middle of the lettering, and an immense, fluffy off-white head perched majestically atop it. It recedes slowly, and I top it off a few times so that the head stretches above the rim of the glass - it's solid enough to go over half an inch over without threatening a spill. Some yeast sediment swirls through the body, eventually lending a bit of haze. It's a beautiful beer, but doesn't look at all like the style it's supposed to be.

S: Maybe it's Duvel-like appearance is making me crazy, but my first impression of the nose is that it seems slightly more Belgian than German - tons of fruity esters (apples and figs), and some decided spice in addition to bready malt. As it warms some more traditional wheat and banana notes arrive, but they're still less apparent than the spicy, Belgian-esque esters. Quite sweet and enjoyable overall, although perhaps a bit too dizzying with the complexity of yeast notes - but that's a good problem to have.

T: Sweet, bready malt starts things off smoothly, followed by bright fruity esters (some pear, as well as the apple and fig from the nose), followed by some alcohol and spice on the finish and, finally, a yeasty aftertaste. Overall, good balance among disparate flavors, but just a bit too sweet for my tastes.

M: Sticky medium body with a great amount of rich, lively carbonation - and it needs every bubble to help combat cloyingness.

D: Doesn't do much to hide the rather moderate ABV, and the sweetness is a tad overwhelming. Still, I don't expect too much more from a weizenbock.

Notes: This is definitely a delicious and well-made brew (and one that I would recommend to just about anyone), but I can't get over how little it resembles, say, Aventinus. Light body, no noticeable dark fruits, and only sweet breadiness from the malt profile. It reminds me more of Unibroue's Don de Dieu than anything else, and I kind of dig the Belgian attributes (as much as I was surprised by them). As with everything else I've had from Weihenstephan, this is more than worth a shot - just don't expect anything like an Aventinus.

A-pours a cloudy straw yellow with a creamy white head leaving a decent lace on the glass.

S-the nose has a fair bit of fruit yeast with some light notes of spice to it. a fair bit of pear, green apple, lemon, hints of banana. there is some light toasted bread with hints of yeasty spice in the back.

T-the taste isn't quite as full as the nose. the fruitiness is still there, light caramel malt and some toasted bread up front, the banana, pear, and lemon come in behind with just a touch of white peppery spice in the back.

M-good body, medium chewy body with a slick crisp finish and assertive carbonation.

D-this is very tasty, the flavor is slightly watered down compared to the nose but still extremely solid. great flavors working well together with a touch of alcohol in the finish. I like it a lot!

bottle served into a weissbier glass

Pours out all foam at first, generating a full four fingers of head that takes on the pale shade of banana flesh. The body is substantially lighter in color than other weizenbocks I've had; VITUS sits in the glass a lemon yellow with a nice balance of translucency and haze. The head eventually settles down into a fluffy two fingers with a decided creaminess at its center.

Tangy wheat is the dominant aroma as one might expect. There's a bit of brewing spice and a slight vegetal quality that smells like a squash or a gourd of some sort. There is a trace of nutmeg and rubbing alcohol (though this is by no means a beer flush with alcohol heat, its more the astringency of rubbing alcohol that I pick up). This is good but it isn't really what I'd call complex.

The squash flavor from the nose manifests itself in a hefe-like banana taste. There are fleeting traces of creme fraiche but mostly this is a sweet beer. Candy corn and zippy, lemony wheat along with a tiny bit of alcohol. Again, this isn't complex in comparison to superior weizenbocks such as Aventinus.

This feels lighter in the mouth than it really is, only upon swallow do you get a sense of the medium-bodied nature of VITUS. There is plenty of carbonation to this beer but it never really feels too prickly on your tongue. A sharper mouthfeel might have been an improvement. For what it is, VITUS is certainly drinkable. You won't want more than one bottle and the one bottle you do want has a tendency to go as quickly as a lot of hefewiezens do.

This is a fine, fine beer. It suffers in my mental perception for not being a worthy opponent to Aventinus but ignoring that very different weizenbock will allow you to enjoy what VITUS brings to the table.

500mL bottle poured into my Duvel Tulip.

Pours cloudy apricot in color with three fingers of foam that quickly rush to the surface and fill the glass. Takes two pours to fit the entire bottle into the glass.

The aroma is full of a banana yeastiness. Banana really dominates, and it is quite aromatic.

First sip is punctuated with a sharp yeasty bite, followed by a ton of malty body. Wheat malt really shows through.

The mouthfeel is full bodied, almost chewy. Much fuller than I expected. For that reason, it is not quite as quaffable as I'd prefer, but it does expertly hide the 7.7% ABV.

I can't say I've had too many weizenbocks before (Victory Moonglow and Weyerbacher Slam Dunkel are the only two that come to mind), but this beer really is flavorful and full of character. I'd recommend this beer to anyone who is a fan of the style.

Poured into my hefeweizen glass.

A: Pours a gradient golden ranging from pale golden to light golden. A fair amount of head that faded relatively quickly leaving no lacing on the glass, and just a thin layer on top. Good, but not great.

S: I smell almost nothing but banana. Just the ever-so-slightest hint of spice. Definitely leaves something to be desired.

T: Tastes a little stale, honestly. Banana and cloves abound, but I pick up a nice, hefty malt background present too. Very good.

M: Well crafted mouthfeel. Slightly bitter, but everything else runs smoothly. Nice somewhat slick residue left behind. Crisp, without being overly dry. I like it.

D: This is easy on the palate. Crisp, smooth, refreshing, tasty. I could easily drink some more of these.

Appearance is a golden honey color, semi cloudy, excellent fluffy head & retention.
Smell is bold banana/fruity aromas on a light wheat malt base, with a dash of the booze from the abv.
Tastes as it smells. A nice description would be an "Imperial Hefeweizen" with a dash of abv/booze from the same brewer. A lighter style Weizenbock, more banana/fruit, no noticeable dark wheat/caramel/toffee.
Mouthfeel is medium thin body, medium++ carbonation, less "creamy" mouthfeel than most wheat beers & hefeweizens.
Drinkability is high for a lighter Weizenbock example, more of an Imperial Hefeweizen than a true Weizenbock, but still very nice.

Nice to drink on a weizenbock starter brew day :) for inspiration...less sediment than expected, may not be the best candidate for a yeast harvest, I would use Sierra Kellerweis before Vituss...

Wow. Absolutely terrific. Poured up a pale yellow colour with a bit of cloudiness; almost white around the edges when held up to a lamp. Head is loosely-knit white suds that fade away after a few moments leaving only a blanket of frost. Smell is an explosion of spice with a bit of an earthy mustiness. Very nice. Taste, too, is big spice with a bit of bitterness towards the finish. This drinks a little bit below the advertised 7,7% and has a moderately carbonated mouthfeel. A very, very solidly crafted Weizenbock and a well-built beer in its own right. Impressive.

Pours a cloudy, maize color on top and a hazy, pale yellow on bottom. One and one half inch head of a white color. Great retention and slight lacing. Smells of yeast, hops, citrus, clove, and sweet malt. Fits the style of a Weizenbock. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp with a high carbonation level. Tastes of yeast, sweet malt, citrus, and slight tart malt. Overall, good aroma, blend, body, but too much effervescence.

a- a typical helles color, dirty blond haze with a consistent but light creamy white head, nearly no lacing at all.

0.5L bottle poured into a weizen glass

Pours an extremely hazy golden orange with a huge, fluffy paper white cap that took its time settling to a thin layer. Streams of bubbles move vigorously to the top. Some mild lacing.

Aroma is of clove, chalk and banana with just a hint of lemon rind. Doughy yeast reminiscent of undercooked bread.

Fresh wheat up front allow the banana and spiciness from the clove some room to play. Lemony citrus dominates the middle before giving way to warming in the finish. Malt heavy with just a little bit of citrus hops peeking through.

Smooth, creamy body. Luscious with a medium body. A chalky like presence that is throwing me off a little bit.

Pleasantly drinkable with a full flavor profile. Too easy to drink for the 7.7% the bottle boasts.

Pours a slightly hazy straw yellow with a thick, if not too persistent, fluffy white head. Aroma is strong, yeasty and a little lemony with malty and rubbery hints. Refreshing flavor is crisp, malty, yeasty and lemony with a hint of hop bitterness. Texture is strongly tingly, yet it slides smoothly down the pipes. It leaves a nice tingle on the tongue and inside the lips.

Poured into an Ennglish style pint glass. The appearance surprised me very light for this style. Very cloudy pale yellow with a big creamy white head that hangs around for a while before going into a thin film with minimal lacing. Bananna and clove aroma with some breadiness to it too. Sweet taste with bananna and clove with a citrusy finish. This was good to drink but a bit of surprise since its a lot more weizen and not much bock.

A: LOTS of carbonation and a semi-vigourous pour elicited a 4-finger white head. Hazy straw which was a complete surprise as a pale Weizmann was new to me. No lace

S: Wheat and bread malt notes with coriander, apple and pear sweetness on the nose.

T: A nice grassy hop finish with some warming from the alcohol. The middle is full of a citric caramel but wheat dominated the flavor. Some coriander and banana flavors were apparent as well.

M: Creamy with small bubble carbonation and slick on the finish from the wheat and hop.

D: Smooth and light for a weizenbock and a moderate ABV.

Overall this was a surprise. Not only for the deviation from style color but the taste and aromas as well. The complex blend of wheat sweetness and maltiness characteristic of a weizenbock but keeping it light was exquisite. Great for a fall day in the Midwest!

A: Bright golden yellow body. Massive white creamy head with billions of tiny bubbles. Great retention before crashing to a hearty skim. Spotty lacing left behind.

S: Light banana, wheat, and clove notes. Other subtle sweet fruits lie in the background. Ever so slight booze notes.

T: Like the nose, this is a bright banana, clove and wheat blast. The notes are definitely stronger here than in the nose though. Again, there are some miscellaneous fruit notes hiding in the background. Most notable is a slight mellow navel orange sweetness. Also some sweet, fresh biscuit maltyness is present.

M: Refreshing, moderate weight body. Clean, crisp finish. Substantial, but not distracting carbonation levels.

D: Overall, a very enjoyable brew. It doesn't quite have the flavor complexity of Aventinus, but that shouldn't stop anyone from picking this brew up and giving it a go.

Poured from a bottle into a wheat beer glass. Beer is yellow and cloudy. Forms a super thick white head of medium to large bubbles that falls away quickly allowing me to refill the glass with the remaining beer in the bottle. The breaking head leaves lacing on the glass as it fall. Carbonation is high and made up of medium bubbles that rise quickly through the beer. This beer is lighter than other weizenbocks but it looks great.

Aroma is simple and mild, sweet and slight esters, nothing too big.

Beer is medium bodied, has a nice wheaty flavor and a slight aftertaste that adds to the overall feel of the beer. Carbonation is big in the mouth and does a nice job accenting the sweetness of the beer. Drinkability is high, another wonderful beer by Weihenstephaner. It is truly great. Mouthfeel is good. Its a great beer. Weizenbocks have a tendency to get offensively sweet, this is not the case with this beer. You can taste the esters and there is some underlying sweetness but its not the star, its there to accent the wheat. I really enjoy this beer.

Don't drink this one too cold or too warm. I served this one just below room temperature, and I feel that cellar temperature would be perfect.
I've never had a Weizenbock before, so this review compares Vitus to the Weihen. Hefe and my enjoyment of the beer overall, I will amend my review when I have more examples of the style.

A: Looks sort of like the Weihenstephan Hefe: hazy pale yellow with orange/gold highlights. Pours with a beautiful 4-finger billowing head that dissipates to a one finger while leaving plenty of lacing. The head never completely dissipates. Looks like a work of art in the my Weihenstephan weizen glass.

S: Mmm, some banana and clove upfront. The malt is pushed aside by a bit of alcohol astringency in the aroma compared with the hefe. I am getting a hint of apple and a surprising amount of orange in the aroma. There is some caramel and butterscotch in there with the malt aroma.

T: Bam! This has an unexpected alcoholic kick. This is similar to the Weihenstephan Hefe, but much stronger, and in my opinion, much more enjoyable if you are drinking it back to back with IPAs or strong ales. Less sweet than the Hefe, yet the malt isn't lost and the flavor is upfront. Clove is much stronger than the regular Hefe, and hop bitterness has been kicked up a notch (thanks, Emeril).
Alcohol warmth is definitely noticeable in this one, even to an excessive degree. I can even feel alcohol on the tongue. I am highly doubting that there is only 7.7% alcohol in the final product, I am catching a similar buzz after half of my bomber of Vitus that I catch after finishing a bottle of hopslam. Hops replace most of the fruity esters usually found in Weizens.
Orange and citrus seem to be a much welcomed newcomer to the flavor department, I am positive that the stronger presence of hops is doing this. Complexity seems to lack compared to the hefe.

M: The most creamy wheat beer I've had yet, it fills and expands your mouth like whipped cream. Yummy. Perfect carbonation and bottle conditioning.

D: This one sits a little heavy and feels a little astringent, it definitely lets it's 7.7% alcohol content be known. Even so, I can enjoy this one, but probably only one bomber at a time.

O: Unexpected alcoholic heat distracts me too much from the nice flavors and glorious mouthfeel. Even so, as usual, the World's oldest brewery has a solid beer on their hands. This example still hasn't convinced me that 'big' wheats work.

Poured into a tulip. Straw colored body. Poured 2 finger, fluffy white head. Good carbonation.

Smell was of ripe bananas and hints of cloves along with fruity esters. Mildy sweet smelling.

The flavor reflects the aroma pretty well. Banana flvors, slight cloves and spices. Mild sweetness. Yeast and belgian-like fruitiness.

Mouthfeel had a medium body with high carbonation. Slightly sticky.

Drinkability was good. Little signs of aby but has a great flavor.

A nice bright yellow color almost golden.Wow lots of white foamy head that dissipated slowly. Very slight lacing left behind.

Bananas, citrus, and spice the usual smells of a good hefe.

This thing was good bananas, bananas, and more bananas. Yeasty and wheaty follow with a hint of citrus left behind on the tongue. Actually one of the nicest aftertastes I have ever had.

Smooth, creamy a medium body to it a bit too much carbonation for the type for my tastes.

This is ridiculously drinkable. I could have multiple more. The alcohol is well hidden, hard to believe it is 7+%. This is just a great beer.

16.9 from Savemore in Clifton Park.

A - golden, cloudy. 3/4" white foam.

S - predominantly banana bread. very inviting.

T - wheat, lemon, creamy. plenty of isoamyl acetate. really very good. kept putting this one off because the presentation (bottle) is lame, made me think of coffee/chocolate for some reason.

M - crisp, smooth carbonation.

D - outstanding. delicious and none of the other attributes take anything away from it. could have a 'few' on a nice warm summer evening.

A: Cloudy, light yellow color, with nearly an inch of head. This beer looks fantastic!

S: Bananas and spices. Some hints of citrus and yeast.

T: Lots of banana, sweet fruits (grapes, apples, pears). Tastes like a hefeweizen, but with much more intense flavors. Finishes off with some citrus notes.

M: Dry and light with plenty of carbonation. Really smooth, perfect for this style.

D: The balance is alttle strange, as many have said, this tastes like a hefeweizen on crack. I personally find the strong banana and fruit flavors very appealing. This is one of my favorites, and something I buy regularly, it's also pretty affordable.

Drunk from a "Vitus" glass that a freind gave me (thanks Andreas!) poured from a .5 liter bottle purchased from my local Stuttgart drink market.

Total home run! My favorite example of one of my favorite styles.

Appearance: Cloudy hazy yellow, with a slight hint of orange. Thick copious head that sticks around, and laces the glass nicely.

Smell: The usual weizen scents, bannana, a bit of citrus, and spice. No real indictor of anything but a weizen.

Taste: Fruit everywhere!! Apple in particular but also with an almost winey character that I think must come from the alcohol. Plenty of the other weizen flavors as well. Not so sweet as to be overwhelming though. Finishes nicely dry.

Mouthfeel: A nice smooth almost chewy feel. Carbonation is there, but not too strong.

Drinkability: Dangerous. High alcohol content, but I can drink these over and over again. The price is right here in Germany. (About a dollar per bottle when purchased by the case) I dread how much I'll have to pay for this when I return home to the States....

Pours a very hazed golden peach with a monstrous head of foam, which very slowly dissipates, leaving behind some very nice lacing. Lots of carbonation rushing to the top, and this continues for some time. The aroma is of a multitude of yeasty esters, the primary ones being--not surprisingly--clove (the most prominent), banana, and bubblegum. The taste is similar, but there is a certain cloying sweetness as well. A bit of the wheat seems to be coming through in the taste, although the mouthfeel is a little thin, so it's not coming through in that regard. Drinkability is quite high, especially given the high abv, which there is no trace of in the taste or mouthfeel.

Single bottle (has a code, but not a date code I could interpret) poured into a weizen glass without disturbing the sediment at the end.

Appearance: Golden yellow hazy color with lots of bubbles coming up through the beer. Huge head that settles down to form and eggshell white foam with lots of lacing.

Smell: A bit musty, some hints of banana in there, but not as appealing in the glass smell-wise as it was when I cracked the bottle.

Taste: Apples and white grape, muted malt, and some of that classic German wheat beer tastes. Grapes stronger towards the end.

Mouthfeel: While the carbonation is quite obvious from looking at the beer, in the mouth it's not strong at all. Very smooth, quenching, and coating of the mouth all at the same time. Quite nice.

Drinkability: Went very well with a meal (Chicken cacciatore) and I'm thinking one 500ml bottle is enough for an evening. Not my favorite Weizenbock but it is good and I think it has potential to work well with a lot of other food. I'm wondering though if I stirred up the sediment and drank that too if my experience would be better. I've had Germans tell me this is the thing to do, and others tell me I'm nuts to do it. But I do notice a taste difference between the two routes so I'll have to try it again.

Stopped into Jaspers today to see what's what, and came across Vitus. First time sighting in my area, so I jumped. Only $2.99 for a 0.5l bottle, too.

Popped the cap and got a bit of foamage bubbling out. Yikes! I didn't have a weissbier glass right handy, so I poured Vitus into a Spaten stange. Color is a flat, muted golden, with a thin, fine white head. Carbonation is plentiful in the opaque liquid, hellbent on reaching the surface. The bubbles at the top form about 3/4" of head and slowly ebb back, leaving some lace here and there, but not a whole lot. Aroma is crisp and wheaty, clove and banana shining through. Has the typical weissbier mouthfeel; that being light and airy, dancing across the tongue, with a near-medium body.

Banana hits the palate first off, followed by a smidge of clove. It's a dry bier, with some subtle hints of green apple and pear also being present, and some yeastiness (though there was no sediment in the Flasche). No evidence of anything in the way of chocolate, which I have come to admire in the quintessential weizenbock - Aventinus. That's a hard bier to emulate, for sure. I find this more closely resembles an amped-up hefeweizen, somewhat like Ayingers weizenbock, on the whole. Still, Vitus is a fairly tasty, reasonably priced, solidly made, quite drinkable offering from the good Volk at Weihenstephan.

Appearance: bright golden yellow in color, 3/4 inch head, high carbonation, cloudy

Smell: banana and a touch of lemon

Taste: huge dose of banana and a bit of wheat at the end

Mouthfeel: clean, light, high carbonation, sweet

Drinkability: Another really clean beer from this brewery. I love the lightness and the banana taste. I will be having this again. The alcohol is barely noticable.
