Weihenstephaner VitusWeihenstephaner Vitus

Brewed by:
Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan

Style: Weizenbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our light-coloured, spicy single-bock, “Vitus” is saturated with fine yeast and a creamy foam. It is a specialty with a round character based on the extra long storage time. The fruity smell of dried apricots joins aromas of citrus, cloves and hints of banana. Full-bodied and sparkling with an effervescent mouthfeel. Thus, the Vitus does not taste like a typical Bock beer but more like a noble, fruity wheat beer. Perfect with red meat, strong cheese and also able to guide desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Draft and bottle (want a keg of it)

A: gold to straw in color with a decent amount of haze.

S: smells like clove, banana, yeast.

T: nice amounts of clove banana from yeast

M: easy to drink, body feels huge but its so smooth with perfect carbonation

O: It is an excellent beer, one of the best. Its smooth not huge over the top clove and banana and I prefer it over normal Hefes because of the higher ABV. Its very similar to their normal hefe but its stronger so its better.

This beer was poured into a weizen glass.
The appearance was a semi-hazy golden color with a huge thick white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace leaving some thin spider web lacing all around the glass.
The smell started off with sweet banana maltiness with sweet bread and spicy clove to envelop my nose and drastically bring it to its knees. Holy complexity, Batman, and I usually hate the word complex/ity!
The taste replicates the smell nicely providing an ample amount of the wheat to give a slight grainy setting. But its a good grainy. There's a lingering sweet bready to spiciness entrancing in the aftertaste and coming across in the finish.
The mouthfeel was about light to medium bodied with a superb sessionably sweet feel all across my tongue.
Overall, holy damn, out to wazoo and back. If this isn't a weizenbock, then I'm Mickey Mouse! Top favorite of mine!

This brew is a hazy, golden straw color with a firm white head. The aroma is malty, with a serious wheat and bread scent. Both spicy and sweet, the beer is very drinkable and has a big, soft mouthfeel. The spice in the aroma grows over time, and the beer es exceptionally engaging. Great wheat beer!

12 oz bottle poured into snifter

A: gold to dirty straw in color with a decent amount of haze. Nice fluffy looking head but with a uniform decent into the glass

S: smells like clove, banana, yeasty and lots of bready

T: nice amounts of clove banana a little bit of walnut without the bitterness not as strong belgian yeast as I would have thought not terribly sweet which is nice the breadiness is very pleasant and almost chewy.

M: dry and crisp very easy to drink, body feels huge but its so smooth with just touches of carbonation

O: It is an excellent beer worth drinking anytime you see it. Its smooth not huge over the top clove and banana more laid back highly drinkable.

Cloudy golden color with a good amount of activity. Thick frothy white 3 finger sparkling head, lasting around 10 to 15 minutes, with average legs.

Aroma of pleasant wheathy sweet bread. Flavors of belgian yeasty caramel, vinous estery fruits, sweet malts, banana, floral and herbal spices. Thick sugary fruitiness with minimal sharpness.

Smooth full thick body with a perfect amount of carbonation. Medium strength to strong finish, ending with some powerful citrus yeasty spices, and faint smoky clove.

Overall an excellent quality craft offering great flavors, and a warming and refreshing feel. Although not very well intensified being highly spicy but it does calm down over time. Faint diacetyl feel.

A beautiful, creamy beer that hides its abv very well with its spices and fruity wheat tang. I feel as though that this would be a delicious beer to beer drinkers who indulged in wheat beers with a hefeweizen cross. I much prefer their hefeweizen but thus was still pretty good.

Pours a bright, hazy golden color with a thick pure-white head that leaves no lacing behind. Smells of banana, wheat, and clove. Flavor starts with a quick clove spiciness before erupting with sweet banana deliciousness. Well carbonated, very smooth, ends with just a touch of dryness that complements the banana sweetness.

Very delicious beer that is incredibly balanced. Refreshing, tasty, satisfying.

Bought this Weizenbock in a 500 ml glass bottle for 1.30 € plus 8 cents deposit. Poured it into a Weizenglass. This Weizenbock has an lovely, cloudy golden color and a very thick, white head that lasts almost forever. I smelled some dry bananas, cloves and some spices. This beer tasted so incredibly good. I never felt the 7.7% ABV, they're perfectly hidden. This Weihenstephaner is even better than "normal" Hefeweissbier version. The drinkability was just outstanding. I think I never drank a beer with that much ABV without feeling it! I think I just drank the best Weizenbock ever created by mankind! No doubt, Weihenstephaner Vitus is a true masterpiece!

Poured into - what else? - a Weizen glass.

L: Pours a classically cloudy pale-yellow. A full, frothy head lingers for a few minutes before settling into a dense little cap. Sticky webs of lacing trail down the sides of the glass.

S: Very Hefe. Immediate banana and clove, with some spice in the mix. Classic wheat scents, pretty sweet.

T: It initially strikes me as very similar to Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier. The taste follows the scent with classic banana and clove. The esters from WSHWB return with a vengeance here, combining with the wheat and banana to create Weihenstephan's unique taste. Alcohol is very present, but is balanced pretty well.

M: Medium body with little astringency. Decent carbonation. Sensations linger on the palate. Not a clean finish. Not a bad thing.

O: Very good if you want a Hefeweizen, but crave more alcohol. The Vitus has most of what makes the Hefe good while adding that extra kick. Still, with this particular flavor profile the Weizenbock style doesn't quite reach the heights of WSHWB. That said, there's no denying this is a pretty fantastic brew.

Serving Type: Bottle
Consumed: 9.2.15

A: 4.5 Pours a hazy, apricot-gold with a uniform, fluffy, off-white head. Looks to be a lively beer with the large head lasting a few minutes.

S: 4.25 Smell is really nice and very wheat forward. Reminds me a lot of the hefeweissbier with lots of spice and esters. This is a bit stronger on the spice with tangerine and lemon mixed in.

T: 4.25 Like the nose, the flavors are very wheat and ester forward. The citrus elements drop off somewhat, but the spice is there in a very nice way. German yeast mixes in with the Belgian-like ester qualities while still bringing its own unique flavors. Finish is slightly dry and not at all bitter.

M: 4.75 This beer is so drinkable and refreshing. The body is great, as is the carbonation, and the dry finish is so nice.

O: 4.25 This beer is pretty similar to their hefeweissbier, but also adds its own distinct qualities. I think both are great and very balanced in both aroma and flavor, but I think I prefer this one on drinkability alone.

Poured from a glorious 500ml into my favorite glass (Hacker-Pshorr twisty deal).

Then, my throat was all "oh, fuck it. stomach, this is for YOU".

Then my stomach was all "Nom nom nom".

So that beer is a goner.

Very similar to Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen, which is awesome. Let it warm up a little bit and wow does the flavor and the alcohol come out. Outstanding, one of the best beers I've ever had.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a tulip glass

A: Hazy, bright orange color, two fingers of wispy white head.
S: Spices, pepper, hay, wheat, cloves, orange, banana, pears, vanilla, breadyness in the background
T: Sweetness upfront, spices, bananas, cloves, dry wheat in the finish
M: Full body with a surprisingly light mouthfeel, big carbonation scrubs the palate towards the end, dry finish. Drinks like a 5% beer, not like a near 8% beer.
O: Classic german beer, lots of flavor and well crafted. It tastes a lot like a good hefe mixed with a tripel

looks like a hefeweizen with the burnt orange and nice white head.

the smell is similar to a hefeweizen, saison, and a maibock. i like the banana clove-ishness of a hefe but am not a huge fan of the maibock/saison smell. i think it's too much grass and almost onion aroma.

taste is very much like a hefeweizen. reminds me of Weihenstephaner Hefe but a toasted version of it. delicious, toasted banana bread but not as sweet. the sweetness gets muted, which is actually nice.

this goes down smoothly and is somewhat thick but not syrupy thick. thick as in substantial.

overall - i think i prefer Weihenstephaner Hefe to this but not by much. another beer from Weihenstephan that I love. honestly i was expecting this beer to be a dark brown color so out of the bottle i was surprised. the light color makes me think of spring/summer but the fact that this beer is thick and warming i could enjoy this in the dog days of winter

Take your wheat beer to the next level, have a Virus. Brewed to bock strength this is one tasty beast. Aromas of wheat, dough and grains are followed by typical wheat phenols and esters. No shortage of flavor either, an almost wheaty cake taste paired with clove and bannanas . Flavors mesh well and the alcohol is hidden well. What a great beer.

pours a deep cloudy yellow, a yellow not seen in other beers. smells deep and full of bananas with a strong wheat characteristic, taste is smooth, long and again full of bananas, the higher ABV is undetectable, a delicious brew, feel is complex, full and complicated. a masterful creation, weihenstephaner continues to amaze. love this stuff. the flavors and complexities showed strongest as the beer warmed slightly which I am finding with most of their offerings.

Look: Incredibly cloudy and unfiltered appearance with a fluffy white head. There are drooping arms of lacing that decorate the glass until the very end, although the head dissipates rather quickly to a thin cap.

Smell: Full on yeast derived banana-like aroma that is uncannily reminiscent of a Tripel. It has a surprising burst of coriander, which isn't actually present in the brewing process.

Taste: If I were blindfolded and tried this brew, I would say for certain that it is a Tripel. This is a huge compliment because this is a Weizenbock so it has a lot of flavor packed into each sip regardless of style. I perceive a slight grassy tinge from the hops, which are likely all noble varieties. No bitterness here but they do play a role.

Feel: Very silky smooth but somehow light and crisp. This is a result of the brewing process which coaxes numerous desirable traits from the scarce ingredients.

Overall: Very well executed! This is a true German beer and it tastes almost like a Saison. But to accomplish this without a split fermentation is truly genius, making this beauty a real treat. Cheers!

12oz bottle.

A: Golden in color with a light haze. Huge rocky head lasts forever and leaves behind a ton of clumpy lacing.

S: Irish soda bread, plump golden raisins, ripe bananas, pears. Vanilla, pepper, and clove phenols. Yeasty must.

T: Bready and crackery malt base, hint of confectioners sugar, soda bread, golden raisins, soft vanilla. Ripe banana. Pear. Pepper and clove. Mild tang and lemony/orange zest. Just the slightest hint of spicy alcohol. Creamy bananas and pepper on the finish.

M: Full medium body, but airy and fluffy in the mouth. Silky with a mousse-like texture and an effortless smoothness. Expressive carbonation.

O: Wow this is good. I tend to favor the darker side of the weizenbock spectrum, but this could change my mind. It's as complex as they come, and it flaunts effortless grace and balance with a seamless integration of flavors. It's very well crafted and has all the intangibles that make for an outstanding, world-class brew.

S: Bubble gum, banana, clove, spices

T: Same as smell, really sweet, a bit spiciness maybe from a mixture of the spices and heat from the alcohol

M: Medium, really lively carbonation

O: Great beer. I love the tastes that the yeast esters give this beer. Smell and taste are excellent.

Poured from a bottle into a wine glass.

L - Golden yellow with a huge fluffy white dense bubbles on the head. It looks a beer commercials are trying to imitate.

S- Fruity, banana clove, bubble gum

T - Bready fruity, with a slight hint of bubble gum

Overall this is a great beer. I can see why its one of the old school styles that is still on the top 250 and for its price point of 4 dollars it cant be beat.
