Style: Weizenbock

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our light-coloured, spicy single-bock, “Vitus” is saturated with fine yeast and a creamy foam. It is a specialty with a round character based on the extra long storage time. The fruity smell of dried apricots joins aromas of citrus, cloves and hints of banana. Full-bodied and sparkling with an effervescent mouthfeel. Thus, the Vitus does not taste like a typical Bock beer but more like a noble, fruity wheat beer. Perfect with red meat, strong cheese and also able to guide desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

A - Beautiful golden yellow, with serious yeast floaties, a full white head that fades to a short layer on top and lacing.

S - Sour lemon and banana yeast notes.

T - Starts with spice, but the middle comes in with fruit and bread. The taste is much like banana bread, with a subtle sour lemon flavor.

M - Crisp, clean, and full.

O - Another strong entry by Weihenstephaner. Delicious taste, full bodied, and quite drinkable.

Appearance (4.25) : Oh lordy. The head on this is colossal. Towering pillowy white 4-fingered head that is tightly knit and creamy. The body is a mango-pineapple opaque hue and I can barely just see the shadow of my fingers on the other side when held up to the light. It's about a 70-80% opacity. The head stays around quite awhile like a welcome guest.

Aroma (4.5) : GRIN. Cantaloupe, pear, green grape, berry, banana, with a little cinnamon and sugar. Wheat body underneath. Bouquet is medium strength. This is a nectar of grand antiquity if I ever smelled it.

Taste (4.75) : GRIN. GRIN. GRIN. This beer is absolutely fantastic. The melon and pear notes come out immediately and swarm the palate... it is so rich, so thick, so full. It's like fruit cocktail and pear juice. Banana, mango, green grape, and light cinnamon. So estery. So fruity. So...oh yes. Ends only a tad cloying and sour, but that is the only misstep with this beer so far.

Mouthfeel (4.5) : Creamy, thick, marvelous. Ends crisp, tart, and dry like a fresh apple. This is nectar. Again I say!

Overall (4.69) : I bought this 1 pint, 0.9 fl oz bottle for $2.97 at a local grocery store. I am going back for more. This beer was just out of this world good. A taste from my German heritage and a near perfect beer to boot.

Smell: sweet banana smell, together with the malt.
Feel: medium body. Great aftertaste of maltiness in your mouth. The beer hide the alcohol level quite well.

A great offering to the beer god! Beer like this make you want to live. Would have it anytime, anywhere.

A superb wheat beer. Pours a hazy straw color with creamy head and the nose is the classic lemon and banana. The taste is unique and surprising; starts creamy sweet and finishes even sweeter. Not over the top but enough to let you know that has a bock influence and separates itself from the classic wheat beer they brew. Body is on the light side. Reminds me of the rock-candy like taste you get in a Belgian dubbel.

Appearance – A light straw colour, or cloudy gold if you want to put it another way. This beer supporst a good ½ inch head of dense foam that lasts well and leaves plenty of lacing.

Smell – There is obviously the smell of a typical wheat beer in here but there is also the hint of many fruits. Banana is one of the most obvious with some pear and lemon hints thrown in for good measure.

Taste – The taste follows the nose very closely but there are also notes of spicy cinnamon and biscuit with clove. To try to sum it up it tastes rather like a cake or a pie with a lot of fruit in it.

Mouthfeel – Very creamy with medium body and a slightly dry finish. There is no boozy warmth in this beer and I was surprised by that as it is quite strong.

Overall – Very soft on the pallet with sweet nip this wheat beer bagged itself the WBA best wheat beer award in 2012. Drink a bottle and you will see why. Fragrant with a hint of plum this beer is an absolute cracker and although strong at 7.7% it does not feel like a heavy beer at all.
