Style: Munich Helles Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A good beer takes its time. The long storage makes our yellow bright lager, “Original”, a flavourful beer enjoyed with fine poured, white foam. With a mild hoppy note and its pleasant fresh spicy taste, it goes very well with salads, poultry, stews or with a hearty snack. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Great all around beer. Fresh, crisp, and refreshing. Perfect BBQ beer for me since it is refreshing and does not overpower any flavors. Malty, yeasty, and a little on the sweet side.

Light gold and clear liquid with a fizzy and fleeting white head. A few bits of lacing hang around after. The aroma is yeasty, malty, grainy and sweet with some bright notes like lemon and herbal hops. The taste is sweet and grainy with a decent amount of hops and lemon. This is just a classic and simple beer that is done amazingly well.

Poured into Pils glass. Bottled May 3, 2017. It is a clear pale gold, with a 2 finger frothy head that fades into a cap and leaves some webbed lacing on my glass. Aroma is sour dough bread, light noble hops, with some grain and a hint of lemon zest. It has a light balanced flavor, with some sour dough bread, lemon zest, a light hop presence for a bitter sweet finish. Light bodied with soft carbonation that finishes crisp and smooth. A true delight to drink.

Looks a lot like a 'high quality' AAL: filtered pale yellow body with a small white head produced with medium pour. Better retention and lacing. Aromas are primarily of grain, honey, and grass. Flavors lean towards a honey-bread sweetness with a very clean palate and a light body. Medium carb. While tasty enough, this lacks the same character of some of Weihenstephaner's other offerings.

Poured 11.2 oz bottle into snifter glass. 5.1 % abv

Appearance- Pours a bright yellow with a high white head. Good retention. Clear as can be.

Smell- Crushed grains, biscuits, bready.

Taste- Crisp, sweet breadiness from the malt, lightly toasted. Some lemon sweetness but very slight. Ends a bit on the grassy side, with a light hop bitter kick.

Mouthfeel- Light in body with active carbonation.

Overall- A refreshing, light lager straight from Bavaria. A fine Munich Helles.

Poured from a bottle into a tall Pilsner glass. Nice clear yellow color with decent white head and lacing. Fragran sweet grassy smell. Clean taste, crisp and light. Great lager!

Rated to style and properly poured into correct/traditional glassware, obviously the pilsener glass. The appearance was the normal yellow cloudy/haziness with a nice semi-transparent color to it allowing some carbonation to be seen rising at a nice pace. A one finger white foamy head dissipated fairly quickly leaving sticky slim white rings. The smell started off with the crisp sweet corn maltiness. Delicate biscuit to breadiness. Dropping into a light crisp sweet grassiness as it opens up. The taste was mildly malty sweet weaving the bready/biscuit goodness into the sweet corn. Grassy hops blend sweetly. Delicate sweet bready to corn-like aftertaste. Quick semi-malty finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a spectacular sessionability about it. Carbonation finishes soft but acceptable since it is a Helles lager. Overall, as a Helles lager, it does the trick.

Consumed 6/26/17

A: Yellow gold with some straw - very clear - pours with a medium sized white head, fades to a wispy cap and leaves some spotted lacing

S: Light bread and some noble hops - pilsner malts - light bread, bread dough, freshly baked bread, biscuits, pretzels - some lemon and touches of grass, earth - some bready sweetness and honey-like sweetness - subtle touch of spice from the yeast - lager yeast and something akin to bread yeast

T: Extraordinarily balanced and insanely drinkable - layered, thoroughly interesting malt profile - bread, bread dough, the inside of a soft pretzel, bread right out of the oven, touches of toast and biscuit - lightly grainy - soft pilsner malts - touches of lemon, grass - super clean lager yeast, adds just a touch of pepper and spice - no obvious off flavors - restrained sweetness, with a hint of honey, honey cereal - finishes clean with some lingering sweetness

M: Light body, crisp, medium carbonation, finishes almost entirely clean

O: Where has this OG been all my life?

It almost saddens me that I am just now learning about some classic German styles. Weihenstephaner Original is an absolute delight. It's on the mild side, as the style dictates, but the depth of flavor is just lovely. This is drinkability on another whole level.

330ml bottle into a pint glass

L: Pours a super clear light gold, with a 1-finger head that dissipates quickly. Minimal lacing.

S: Light flowery hops, with some grain and a hint of lemon.

T/F: A nicely balanced flavor, with some malts upfront, a light hop presence, and only a little bitterness. Medium-light carbonation and a very smooth, easy mouthfeel.

O: One of the best lagers out there. Great taste, goes down super smooth, and at 5.1% ABV, you can pound a few of these no problem.
