This is the one hefe-, in which I measure all other’s by. Pours a cloudy golden yellow color with tiny yeasties floating about the glass that ultimately lay to rest on the bottom of the glass. A thick, creamy, full head tempts you to sample what lies beneath. Aromas of citrus, bananas, and sweet malted wheat pull you in even further. Taste is exquisitely balanced for a hefe- of this magnitude. Tastes of bananas, citrus peel and yeast seem to blend exceptionally well with the mild wheat flavor. This is one great and refreshing beer. An absolute must try for all hefe- lovers.

Before I opened the bottle, I swirled it a bit to rouse up the yeast on the bottom. The beer poured out a cloudy yellow straw color. The head was colossal and dense white.

The aroma is one of bananas and sweet malt with hints of cloves and spices.

There was a fruitiness and tartness as this beer went down.
Very light in body with a excellent drinkability. There was some pleasant yeastiness in the flavor. This has become my favorite hefe-weizen. Very refreshing. Excellent!

Weihentephaner Weiss beers are, in my opinion, the best Weiss beers that are widely distributed in the U.S. The taste is great, a rich, flavorful Weiss. The color is nice, but a little on the light side. Excellent drinkability, goes down extremely smoothly. I definately recommend this beer.

Hazy golden color. Soapy, thin head. Yeasty citrus aroma. Light banana clove taste. Very refreshing. A little thin in the mouthfeel. Very indicative of the style. This is a very good Heffe but not the best that I have had. Certainly suitable for a benchmark.

I'm thoroughly impressed. This is definitely the best I have tried of this style. It's a beautiful blonde/orange color and very hazy. The head is off-white and enormous. Cloves, yeast, and bananas come through in the pleasant aroma. Zingy carbonation feel on the tongue hits at first, and then an extraordinary smoothness follows. Sweet malts, yeast, cloves, and bananas are all a part of the very enjoyable taste. This is very highly drinkable, a perfect session beer and very refreshing.

Mammoth, multi-finger head, tremendous retention; hazy, cloudy, honey-orange hue, very lively body. Wonderful yeastiness, bubblegum fragrance out shines the banana, a whisper of clove. Glowingly balanced taste with well-placed flavor… more banana is found on the palate, slight bubblegum, almost no clove but solid wheaty-maltiness. Faint mustiness. Pleasing mouthfeel, this is a very enjoyable quaff. Slightly sweet yet mildly tart finish. Probably the best Hefe-Weizen on the planet. World Class… very much recommended… why just drink this in the summer?

After a long morning touring around the Platz in Munich, you see a outdoor market with lots of food stalls and people sitting on benches eating. Many of them seem to be eating the same thing. You ask the person at a food stall , What is everone eating and drinking? The response is simple- weisswurst und hefe weizen. The
beer is poured in a tall, large glass with a thick, billowy head pouring over the side. The nectar is a deep golden, cloudy brew with a cascade of bubbles from top to bottom. It sounds like a bowl full of rice crispies as it snaps, crackles, and pops in the glass. The beer smells of bananas, cloves, buble gum and bready yeast.

The flavors that you can detect are lemon, vanilla, spicy bread and a little malt sweetness. It has a nice crisp mouthfeel that has a little oiliness to it (from oats?) This is a nice proud wheat beer- a benchmark of the style for some, for you, a great escape from the wanderings of a tourist.A rejuvination of the body. You're ready to continue onward.

This color is hazy yellow, a bit to the darker side. Nice foamy head that unfortunately settles quickly and leaves little lazing. It smells fresh and fruity. The taste is also very fresh and fruity and quite sweet, but I dont really like it fully, it's good but it doesn't really float my boat. The carbonation is lying on the border of medium to light. This is quite a good beer though even though it's not one of my favourite types of beer.

Weihenstephaner just makes superb Bavarian-style wheat beers, and this is probably their flagship. A nice golden slightly hazey brew with a huge white head.

The typical clove and banana esthers are heavy in this brew, as is a wonderful malty flavor. Sweet yeasts. Creamy mouthfeel and a smooth, crisp finish. There are no surprises here, just a perfectly crafted German Hefe-Weissbier.

This beer surpasses the Franziskaner hefe and ranks right up there with Paulaner's. Worldclass.

Appearance: Hazy medium golden color with an extraordinarily large white cloudtop head, moderate and natural appearing carbonation, lots of stickly lace. The head exhibits extraordinary retention.

Aroma: Consists of the prototypical cloves and ripe bananas that define this style.

Taste: Begins with lots of soft carbonation and a quite full bread malt flavor and lots of yeast, towards the middle of the taste the clove and ripe banana flavors assert themselves. At the end of the taste some mild hops appear along with some residual malt flavor. The finish is clean and a bit dry.

Mouth feel: The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy.

Drinkability/notes: While I do not particularly care for the Hefeweizen style, it must be conceded that this is a superb beer and a must try for anyone who is a serious student of world=class beer.

I don't know why I keep punishing myself with wheat beers. I don't like them, they don't like me. Sickly sweet taste, way too fruity for me. Pours a nice cloudy amber with good head. Laces well, and smells only faintly vile. If you like wheats try it, as far as they go its better than the alternatives. If you don't like them, don't waste your time...it won't change your mind.

Brauerei Weihenstephan Hefe Weissbier: An absolute classic version of this style, in fact, I think it is the standard to judge all others of its style. In the classic half liter brown bottle, stating that this is the oldest brewery in the world. Fantastic looking beer, with a thick white head, with great Belgian lace, and a cloudy orange/yellow. A pronounced aroma of yeast and bananas. Fairly well carbonated, with a smooth mouthfeel. This has the classic taste of sweet malts balanced by the yeast/banana tastes . Had a fairly clean, and somewhat sweet aftertaste. Very easy to drink and very refreshing.

Appearance: If you're curious what a wheat beer should look like, this is possibly the best example on the planet. A hazy, peach-colored body with dull gold edges topped with a massive, fluffy off-white head that stays around forever. Hundreds of bubbles fight their way to the top of the glass from the strong carbonation.

Smell: Very strong aroma with the traditional banana, clove, and bubblegum notes. There's a bit of spiciness in there, as well as a hearty yeasty smell.

Taste: Very full flavored with a strong malted wheat backbone. Lots of banana and clove intermingle with the spiciness, which all come together in a perfect balance. There's lots of yeast in the body, and it makes itself known on the palate. The finish is dry and clean with the alcohol just barely making it's presence known. Wheat beer perfection.

Mouthfeel: Fairly thin bodied with a dry, crisp mouthfeel that begs for another sip. It actually starts off feeling a bit creamy, then moves to dry and thin (in a good way.)

Drinkability: This is the top rung of the wheat beer ladder. I could drink these all day, every day in the summer and never tire of it. The brewery has been in the same location since 1040 and have one of the top brewing schools in the world, so trust me...they know wheat beer more than anybody.

Pours a very hazy orange-amber with a giant off-white head that slowly recedes. It almost looks like shaving cream as it fades into a rocky layer atop the beer. It was so attractive I had to take a picture of it. A thick-veined lacing is left on the glass. The aroma is bready yeast and a touch of clove and/or coriander. Smells more like the latter. Also a touch of lemon zest in the nose. The taste is superb, with again a nice breadiness, topped with fruity flavors, banana being the strongest of those, with a touch of plum or grape sweetness in the background. A touch of butterscotch adds a nice contrast to the coriander spiciness and wheat crispness on the finish. The mouthfeel is buttery yet very refreshing. Carbonation levels are perfect, providing a nice liveliness on the tongue while not getting agressive and distracting. The drinakbility is exceptional. Even with a full pint, it seemed to disappear quickly. This is a very flavorful and well balanced hefe-weizen. A very nice treat. Thanks to cretemixer for this great beer.

Hazy gold/pale orange in appearance, pouring an enormous, bilious white head. Aroma is shockingly fresh, floral, citrus, lemon, orange, lively, and lovely. Light and playful upon the tongue, brief finish, light body, slight texture. No lemon required, unless you're a certified lily-gilder. Refreshing as a beer can be!

No matter how hard you try, it is impossible to pour this beer without getting a mountainous head on it. Peaks like merangue finally settle until the cloudy straw colored brew's carbonation keeps it fed at about a quarter inch. Malty, yeasty, earthy. Aroma of cloves dominates. Creamy mouthfeel and on the higher end of carbonation. Slightly dry and very flavorful, peppery notes, clove and banana. Finishes strong and satisfying, nice and mellow.

This quite simply is one of the best beers I have ever had! The term "Heaven in a Glass" comes to mind quite frequently as I tip the very cloudy almost burnt orange-ish colored beer towards my mouth. If you like Hefe-Weiss beers then there is no way, you cannot love this beer. If you're not a huge wheat beer fan though I might recommend yu steer clear as the taste can be strong for the typical "Miller Lite" drinker. It's avery smooth beer, with strong tastes of wheat, nuts, and clover... and should be at the top of anyone's list who is a fan of Paulaner, Edleweiss, Tucher, Hacker-Pschorr, Franziskaner and the like!

This is a good Hefe-Weizen - Not great but very drinkable and qualifies for a occasional supply spot in my fridge. The flavor was good with some fruitiness and cloves. The nose was pretty fair. The mouthfeel was full and enjoyable. Goes down smooth with no bad aftertaste. This could be in my personal top 10 German beers after Schneider, Haker-Pschorr and Paulaner. I would definitely recommend trying this one.

After reading Zerk's review, I realized I missed this one along the way. I always have a couple bottles in my fridge.
Cloudy golden yellow to soft orange color. Creamy, foamy, full off-white head. Inviting smells of soft citrus, bananas, sweet malted wheat. Very very inviting. Taste is perfectly balanced for a hefe. Rich banana taste, subtle citrus flavors, and very faint florals. Banana and yeasty, malted wheat sweetness linger, but a crisp refreshing finish wins out. Medium bodied, creamy and super smooth. One of the best of it's style. The ultimate thirst quencher. Please seek it out and try it yourself.

I don't know if the German word "Weihenstephaner" is just a name, or if it actually has any meaning, but if it does, I have to imagine that it means "Wheat Bier that all others must bow before."

Pours a cloudy copper with a beautiful foamy head that leaves some lace down the glass. The head retained at 1/4 inch for well over 20 minutes (it took a lot of willpower to make this beer last that long...) Aroma and flavor are perfect... not really as sweet as some hefes I've had... bananas, cloves, wheat... blended together into the most smooth and creamy brew I can recall drinking.

I nearly broke into tears after finishing this one... for 3 reasons:

1) This is true beer nirvana
2) I only had one bottle
3) I can't find this one in stores here (came across it in a special "Beers of the World" pack in a Costco)

Great beer nice head thick and rich nothing to complain about.

Good body excellent prototype for this style.

Taste was unmatchable.

I recommend this one It's hard to find a good bottle that's not to old, would highly recommend the draught version of this one but the bottle wasn't to bad!

Bright yellowish orange (cloudy orange after the swirl) with a tall persistent pillowy head. Very nice classic Banana-clove yeast aroma and taste (leans towards the fruity side). Light bodied with light creaminess and good carbonation throughout.

This hefe is the standard !

Label states "Oldest brewery in the world" "Since 1040"

When held up to the light it is an chestnut color with a slight orange hue. It smells wheaty with some yeast. In the taste I pick up banana and bubble gum. Still refreshing even though I had on a cold winter's night.

Chill hazed light amber the color as it sets in your glass, “magnificent”. Capacious is the head, brilliant white in color, creamy like whipped butter in its texture with a velum like lace that clings majestically to the glass. Fresh bread dough, citrus or orange like aromas, malt, light sweetness underlies it all, what a treat for the old honker. Lightly sweet on the start, the top middling to thin in feel, the finish is perfectly carbonated, pertinently hopped, dry linger aftertaste. "Crystal Clean" taste, that are quite satisfying and as much as I rant against lagers/pils, I must say that the beers from this brewery, are exquisite, and well worth the "Hunt"!
