Brewed by:
Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan

Style: Kristalweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
In our golden-yellow crystal-clear wheat beer the fresh citrus flavour harmonises very well with spicy banana notes. The fine sparkling gives it a tangy and animated appearance. Throughout summer and winter, it’s a prickling experience. It goes well with fish, seafood, white meat or it can be enjoyed as an aperitif. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

poured in a blind tasting cup

A: very fizzy, bubbly, clear yellow, almost white with a solid white head.

S: banana, sweet heffe malt

T: banana, citrus, wheat, tastes like a weak hefeweizen

Mouthfeel: thin bodied and highly carbonated.

Overall, very sweet citrusy beer. It reminds me of some belgian sweet champagney style beer. I tried this during a blind tasting and liked it a lot.

bottle into pint glass

appearance: clear pale gold/yellow, much more clean and clear than their normal hefe, no particles, also a 2 finger white head, retains longer than traditional hefe

smell: very similar notes to the hefeweiss beer, but everything is toned down a little bit, getting some coriander, clove, orange peel, bubble gum, slight vanilla

taste: Lots of citrus, banana, coriander, cloves, there's somewhat more of a bubble gum presence that's not as dominant in the hefe, this one also has less exotic spiciness and is overall a tamer version flavor wise, none the less the balance, smoothness, and drinkability is truly amazing. The finish leaves an awesome banana, coriander, orange peel aftertaste.

mouthfeel: pretty carbonated, more so than the hefe, medium bodied

overall: You don't see this style very much in the US, but it's obviously very popular in certain parts of Germany. As a hefe is already a pretty smooth beer by definition, this is basically an even smoother version. If you like hefes, you will like this, but this will also appeal more towards lager drinks as well as it's clear without any particles (if that's not your thing). A truly amazing perfectly balanced beer from one of the worlds oldest (and best) breweries.

Pour is a beautiful crystal clear honey golden yellow. Copious soft, light white head, slowly receding.

Nose is soft. Some hints of banana, bread, maybe a touch of lemon.

Taste has a nice bready, yeasty banana that builds as it travels. Not very powerful. Finishes with very slight dry malt.

Feel is super light and crisp.

Great beer. Super drinkable and refreshing. I do agree with some prior posters that this does lack the body and vibrancy of many of Weihenstephaner's other brews. I guess that is the point of this style though. Great beer, but I'll choose most of the others before it.

One question...why?

Ya...it's okay but nowhere near worthy of its brethren. All that makes Weihenstaphaner the king is filtered out in this offering. Taste isn't important to those that opt for this over unfiltered.

Do yourself a favor and drink the unfiltered weissbiers...or have a lager instead if you must.
