Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.30%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our dark wheat beer is impressive with its creamy white foam. A fruity-fresh sweetness and hints of mature bananas harmonise with delicious flavours of roasted malt, sparkling and full-bodied with a light caramel taste on the first sip. An excellent accompaniment from hearty meals and game to chocolate and nut desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Had it at BJ's Oktoberfest beer dinner so took no notes. Remember a very good malty taste and mouthfeel to offset the sweetness nicely. Would buy again.

Pours a hazy chestnut, with a massive khaki head that is hanging out over the edge of the glass; looks like a dessert, and I have a sweet tooth that needs immediate attention. Lots of thick lacing down the glass. The aroma is sweet banana esthers, a little spice, and lots of wheat. The flavor is basically the same; delicious...sweet tooth compensated, very nicely. The feel is soft, with about average carbonation, and fairly dry, although it might be a little sticky on the lips, with a medium full feel. Overall, it seems like a little less of the prickly carbonation from it's blonde relative, and a bit softer on the palate. All in all...a very nice Hefe.

L -- Pours a somewhat hazy orange amber that is surprisingly less hazy and only marginally darker than the regular Hefeweissbier. Still has the excellent off-white head that retains and laces excellently
S -- Shares a lot in common with a Belgian Dark Ale: fruity (especially banana) yeast esters, caramel, toffee, and a touch of doughiness. Getting a little clove and nutmeg as well
T -- Banana, toasted walnuts, clove, caramel, anise, lemon, wheat, and semi-sweet doughy malts
F -- More wholesome and sweet than the Hefe. Nice smooth, creamy, three-dimensional mouthfeel. Medium carb. Just a tad watery around the edges
O -- A good turn-of-season beer that has a more wholesome character than the lighter Weinstephaner Hefeweissbier. Doesn't wow me like that one does, but still a pretty decent value at ~$3.75/16.1oz bottle

Pours a hazy brown colour with substantial foam head. Smell is malt loaf, caramel, and mild banana with a hint of clove and phenol. Taste is malt and banana bread, not unlike many traditional hefe's. Mouthfeel is clean, not too sticky, with medium carbonation. Overall its an excellent refined Dunkel and I find it hard to beat.

Pours a mildly cloudy brown color with a fluffy two inch darkish white head that left ample lacing. Smells and tastes of fresh bread, bananas, cloves, allspice, pepper and toasted malts. Medium to heavy bodied, well carbonated, slightly dry finish with a smooth mouth feel.

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel, 5.3% ABV, 14 IBU. Pours medium viscosity and chestnut brown, with a three+ finger white head that left no lacing. Nose is yeast/bread and mildly toasted malt. Taste is real mild, pepper, a bit toasty, some banana, no detectable bitterness. Outstanding mouthfeel, perfect carbonation and smooth. Overall outstanding. I've wanted to try this for a couple of years and finally got one - and am not disappointed. Very drinkable, could go through a number of these.

Pours a cloudy brown color. Thick bubbly head dissipates steadily to a thin layer of velvety tan foam along the top of the beer.

Smell has notes of wheat, peppery yeast, bread, all-spice, clove, and some hints of dark fruits.

Taste follows the nose with an array of spice flavors up front - pepper, allspice and clove encased in a strong wheat malt backbone that permeates the flavors. Some yeast come through with hints of dark fruits and bread. Has a bit of a twang to the flavor.

Feel is full bodied with mild carbonation. Somewhat drier finish.

Overall a very nice dunkelweizen. Certainly one I have and will drink again.

Look: Caramel, golden, cloudy. Beautiful fluffy dark white head. The head and lacing on this are beautiful.

Smell: Brown bananas, some banana bread spice, slightest hint of gingerbread.

Taste: baking spices, bready malted notes with slight banana after tones. Not much bitterness but by no means overly sweet.

Feel: Medium bodied +, each sip invites another one.

Overall: My local beer stores seem to be getting fresh Weihenstephaner more consistently and thus this is becoming a go-to beer/brewery for me. Always consistent, good priced, excellent offerings.

From the 22 oz bottle in a snifter. This legend pours a murky orange tinged brown
color with a very nice head of off white foam that settles to a thick long lasting layer
that shows nice sudsy lacing. Nose of banana esters, breaded malts, soft sweet wheat,
and light toffee and caramel notes. Flavors follow but exceed with presentation of this
fine brew with caramel and subtle toffee notes awash in breaded malts and sweet
wheat flavors touched on all sides with a finely balanced banana note. Excellent mouth
feel; medium full body, medium carbonation that is lightly crisp and fulfilling, and a
sweet caramel and dark malt finish.

Glad to have tried this one again----a legend in it's own time. Excellent!

Cheers
