Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.30%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our dark wheat beer is impressive with its creamy white foam. A fruity-fresh sweetness and hints of mature bananas harmonise with delicious flavours of roasted malt, sparkling and full-bodied with a light caramel taste on the first sip. An excellent accompaniment from hearty meals and game to chocolate and nut desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

500 ml. bottle poured into a 20 oz. mug.
Vintage mohogany color with a beige pinky finger sized head. A mix of small and large fizzy bubbles quickly gave way to a creamy foam.
Bitter malt aroma with funky yeast and subtle hops.
Sweet malt and bitter roasted malt flavors plus sour yeast are blended throughout the taste, finished off with slightly tangy hops.
Medium texture, enriched by the maltiness with medium-low carbonation.
There is a lot going on here - sweet&sour, bitter, a little pepper - yet well balanced. Centeries of practice have paid off.

Pours a slightly hazy dark amber/light mahogany coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells of bready, caramel malt and estery banana yeast, with hints of chocolate and clove. Taste is malt-forward, with lovely notes of dark bread, chocolate, toffee and a hint of dark fruit, complemented by a strong, estery banana yeast note and mild spiciness as well. Finishes with a light bitterness and spiciness. Soft, smooth mouthfeel with a rich body and medium carbonation. Weihenstephaner clearly knows a thing or two about brewing Hefeweizen, both their normal and dark Weizen are best in style for me personally, but I probably even prefer their dark offering due to the lovely malt notes, greater complexity and perfect balance. Truely an outstanding brew.

Pours a nearly clear deep amber/pale brown. Produces such a large, aggressive head it is difficult to pour. A thick cap remains when it settles. Remarkably it leaves almost no lace on the side of the glass as it recedes. Aroma is heavy to clove, banana, dark wheat bread, caramel & a little coriander. Taste is fruity & bready with clove, banana & caramel. I don't pick up on the coriander here. A little bitterness in the finish and aftertaste combines with the sweetness to provide a nice balance. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Wet, mouth coating with a pleasant carbonation bite. An exemplary version of the style.

Milky amber body with a silky, fine white head that fades to a veneer and a ring. The nose has banana and clove, and also a fair bit of toasted malt, toffee. The taste is warm, and while the flavors here aren't as distinctive as on the nose, they compliment each other exceptionally and combine to become more than the sum of their parts. The body is full and rich, although the carbonation, while not aggressive, is a little too prickly for this weight.
An exceptional beer made from the simplest stuff. Another testament to the high skill of German brewing.
