Notes: Year-round availibility. Our dark wheat beer is impressive with its creamy white foam. A fruity-fresh sweetness and hints of mature bananas harmonise with delicious flavours of roasted malt, sparkling and full-bodied with a light caramel taste on the first sip. An excellent accompaniment from hearty meals and game to chocolate and nut desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Consumed 7/9/19

A: Dark copper from a distance, rich tones of burnt orange and caramel when held near night - lightly hazy - pours with a a gigantic light beige head, slowly fades to a medium cap and leaves walls of lacing

S: Ripe banana esters from the hefe yeast - caramel grains and straight-up caramel - roasty malts and some more caramelization, hints of molasses and toffee - some touches of spice - biscuits and banana bread - some notes of wheat - some lightly grassy hops

T: Delicately and expertly balanced - range of malty flavors, including caramel grain, pale malts, wheat, wheat bread, biscuits - range of lightly sweet notes, including caramel, molasses, and toffee - some clove - lots of banana, somewhat banana-bread like at points - light, mildly grassy bitterness - not too sweet overall, well-attenuated - finishes clean

M: Medium-light body, crisp but simultaneously a touch creamy, medium carbonation

O: Dunked!

I have been posting reviews on Beeradvocate since 2011, and this is somehow the first Dunkelweizen I have ever reviewed. Huh. I guess I picked a good place to start.

Pours how we expected: lighter than a dunkel, but darker than a hefeweizen/weissbier, and opaque. Huge carbonation. Flavor leans into the hefeweizen much harder than the dunkel, with very subtle malt flavor mainly in the aftertaste. But what a great hefeweizen flavor! Aroma is fantastic, typical banana/clove/yeast smell, all also present in the flavor.

Mahogany bottle pour with 2 cm tan head and an aroma of sweet malt and allspice. The flavor is bready malt and caramel with woody hop notes. This is full-bodied and quite pleasant.

Poured into a tall clear pint glass. Body has a deep caramel/mahogany color, a mixture of orange, red, and brown. Many bubbles, very thick creamy tan head with good retention and lacing.

Aroma has very noticeable sweet roasted malts. Notes of caramel, clove, banana, spices, toffee, yeast, and nuts. Grassy hops and sweet smelling. Also subtle cinnamon, banana bread, and maybe some peaches.

Roasted malts, nuts, and grassy hops go hand-in-hand together well. Not as sweet as the aroma may suggest, and is rather subdued, allowing a more traditional flavor to prosper. Body is medium. Overall, a full-feeling and tasting German lager.

500ml bottle served in a nonic pint glass. 6308 is stamped on the back, but I'm not totally sure what that means (although I guess it means this is a fairly old beer).

Pours a nice caramel color with a big head that collapses (but doesn't disappear) quickly. Smell is rich caramel and toffee, moderate to strong date aroma.

Taste is more on the dates, then on the toffee, then a hint of caramel.

Mouthfeel is light and surprisingly crisp for the perceived sweetness. Overall, very nice beer.

Wheat beers do not have much of a smell, neither does this dunkel. The feel is light, but full and carbonated. Taste is sweat and malty. Very nice beer. Give me Bob Dylan and this in a tall mug and I am the tambourine man.

Poured from a bottle stamped 3368 into the test glass
A - Deep copper color, a slight touch of haze, superb carbonation feeds an never ending cap
S - A bit of light brown sugar, banana, clove, earthy hops and a touch of caramel
T - Follows the aromatics in lock step
M - Dances across the palate, semi sweet start quickly runs out with a nicely balanced bitter wave
O - Classic is well a deserved descriptor,

Because *of course* it’s great! It’s Weihenstephaner! Caramel notes on the nose with a dark, rich body with an everlasting film on the glass. Clove flavored wheat with a fresh, smooth, and easy drinking taste. Malty wheat with a bit of cocoa and peppermint seeping through while maintaining a great balance, making this brew irresistible.

Well balanced beer. Smooth, subtle and semi dry. It's smooth like MIchael Jordan lol. Bready, nutty and banana upfront. Malty and spicy (fig) on the backend. Overall, it's a great beer.

It’s pretty easy: you drink this thang and it’s like Montgomery Clift smooth on an extra. Delicate on delicate. Rich malts on rich malt... You take a sip and it deliveres like Kirk Gibson in the clutch. Take another sip? Yes, Raul will.

L: somewhere in between a burnt orange, a brown, and a red. Decent white head that settles into a line of fine bubbles.
S: malt, sweet, rich malt. Faint pepper or hot paprika aroma.
T: again, malt. Very smooth.
F: fine carbonation, pretty good.

This goes exceedingly well with a variety of food. Definitely something you can open and enjoy for an entire meal (maybe not dessert, but the malt sweetness might go good with some cookies). A damn good beer for $3.50 p/500mL bottle.

Hazy light brown, great head retention. It's nice revisiting one of the classics. Perfect yeast character displays excellent spice, clove, and moderately prevalent banana. Mouthfeel is creamy. No roast is present, just a smooth chocolate suggestion. Wheat is very prominent and even a small nip of hops comes out. This is the hallmark of the style.

The beer fills your glass with an aggressive climbing soft white head.

I find the aroma is modest. You may pick up mild wheat bread and clove. The taste further accentuates a malty character with cloves at the end. A hint of raisin and caramel are also relatively easy to find.

The mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, and low carbonation.

Personally, I found it a little less spicy and fruity than I had hoped for. It certainly is friendly to drink and welcome for a damp, fall day.

Amazing Dunkel! Pours light amber color. Tasting malted caramel. Almost like caramelized sugar. Excellent. Smooth. Mildly carbonated. Glorious wheat. So deliciously drinkable.

Dark amber to mahogany slightly hazy pour with thick cream coloured head. Aroma is sweet grassy caramel malt, banana, clove. Taste follows the nose - bready caramel, banana, bit of orange and clove. Medium mouthfeel with creaminess verging on pleasantly foamy on the palate. Smooth and nicely carbonated - really good!

To be fair this beer was preceded by two superior dark biers. Not a bad heffy but not a real dunkel. The scent lacks the clarity of great hefeweissbiers and it does not shine in the dunkel spectrum.

Taste: Smooth, nutty, dark bread, chocolate malty, slight sweet. Roasted malt, bready nose. Dark to med brown hue, semi opaque, rich tan creamy head. Medium to full body. Just like I remember having it over the last 10 years from time to time.

Poured into weizen glass. Big old beige head, amber brown body.

Nose of oat and light banana, peaches. Taste is a dark and bready, with a creaminess. Smooth

Mouth is medium dry, nice and smooth overall.

Definitely worth the rep. A good, hearty dark wheat beer. Good with food, and cooler weather.

Just had the hefeweissbier, which I am not a huge fan of. Just something about wheat beers! I prefer this. L. From 500 ml bottle into tall glass. Dark, murky brown with a decent white head which fades over time to modest lacing. S. Sweet malty grain, a touch of fruit but less than the hefeweissbier. T. Similar, I get a touch of the banana (which I don't really care for) and nut. F. Smooth, medium body, the relatively high carbonation doesn't get in the way. O. Good, but generally avoid wheat beers!

L: hazy dark auburn to chestnut under a 2.5" cream colored cap that approaches the texture of whipped cream

S: light moist dark banana bread aroma that hints of clove.

T: Banana bread flavors lead with hints of nuts and baking spices and traces of caramel and dark sugars.

F: medium full bodied beer is very creamy and luscious with medium soft carbonation

O: very nicely made and well balanced banana bread in a glass

L - opaque brown with a large creamy tan head that sticks around and leaves some lacing behind.
S - Wheat, bready yeast, banana, cloves, roasted malt, caramel.
T - Follows the nose with wheat and bready yeast up front followed by a solid amount of banana, roasted malt, caramel, dates, and spices.
F - medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy but crisp.
O - Such an incredibly great hefeweissbier in every way imaginable and arguably an improvement over their standard hefeweissbier- a classic and world class for sure.

This is simply the best Hefe out there. Dark golden brown in colour with tons of white lacing. Strong maltiness and caramel notes with huge amount of banana flavour. All in all an absolute classic. Tons of sediment at the bottom.

Edit: I thought I would add that this was about 4 weeks before the best before date.

16.9oz bottle into Perfect Pint
4147 date code
Amber closer to brown actually with huge fluffy light brown head
Bananas, dates, yeast
Caramel apple, bananas figs, dates, heavy yeast on the finish along with cloves
Light bodied and heavily carbonated, makes for a weird feel
Overall i enjoy the flavor profile, i think the dark fruits add a lot, but the feel throws me off

Pours a cloudy light chestnut color, ample foamy head that fades to a thin micro bubble covering. Interesting aroma - I swear I smell toffee, along with some banana and light clove. Taste is caramel all the way, some nice fruity esthers, banana, light brown sugar. Medium bodied, somewhat creamy. Overall a complete steal for $3.50 / 16.9oz bottle. Absolutely delicious.
