A fruity-fresh sweetness and hints of mature bananas harmonise with delicious flavours of roasted malt, sparkling and full-bodied with a light caramel taste on the first sip. An excellent accompaniment from hearty meals and game to chocolate and nut desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

I think I'm partial to this type of beer. I also like the texture of unfiltered beers, but I'm not sure if this one is. It smells like a spring garden. It looks like smooth liquid caramel. The lacing is quick and weak. If you pour it fast, it makes a huge fluffy head that doesn't linger. It tastes light and easy with a subtle sweet aftertaste. I'm delighted with it. The bottle says that it was "brewed under the purity law of 1516." Hmmm. Sounds interesting.

This was given to me as a X-mas present this past year. I was surprised to see that I hadn't previously reviewed/rated it.

The beer pours a somewhat hazy, tannish orange amber color with excellent head retention and considerably lacing. The nose is pretty much everything you'd want in a dunkel weizen, as I pick up clove, light banana, nutmeg, a hint of burnt toast and dark chocolate, along with some light licorice. The flavor profile replicates the nose for the most part, although the beer seemed to be dominated by the clove, spice and burnt toast characteristics. There was some noticeable initial sweetness in the beer as well, that was nicely countered by the spice and burnt toast flavor. Mouthfeel was fairly light, though for such a low abv. beer, there certainly was no lack of flavor intensity. Alcohol was completely unnoticeable, and so drinkability was very good.

While I prefer the regular hefeweizen to this version, nevertheless, this was a very enjoyable, easy to appreciate beer from Weihenstephaner. Of course that's no surprise, as pretty much everything I've had from this reputable brewery has been excellent.

Dark amber, copper color with huge foamy head that never lets up. I actually have to wait several minutes to take a sip.

Smooth, rich yeasty, wheat aroma. Fresh, malty, and complex with pepper, clove and coriander spice added.

Flavor follows the nose well with exceptional balanced. Subtle banana undertones. Finishes clean.

Smooth medium body. Tiny, lively bubbles. Fine, grainy texture.

Everything I could expect from a dunkel.

Pours a lightish brown with medium carbonation. Very bready with the banana flavor from the yeast. Hops aren't notable. Not terribly sweet or anything. MMMM liquid banana bread.

From the 1/2 liter bottle, it pours a hazy light brownish amber with a frothy head that stays a while, slowly dissipating. Yeasty, bready, banana-ey smell tickles the nose. A bit of banana hits the tongue, along with the maltiness. Feels just like a wheatbier should! Yum!

A- Pours a orange tinged copper color, that has plenty of haze due to yeast....the head is an off white color, and is creamy soap in texture....it retains quite well too. Carbonation, from what I can see, is mellow and lumbering...the lacing is quite well, with medium sized patches sticking to the side of the glass...overall, a winning look!

S- Traditional spicy notes, primarily coming from such goodness as clove, nutmeg, slight pepper, mild cinnamon, banana fruit and other tropical aromas. There is bread like biscuit noted, and yeasty creaminess too....the finish seems to be long and not bitter at all.

T- Very much of banana fruit, with some blends of various citrus fruit, however it is much more muted, but balances the richness. Spiciness coats the palate with ginger, clove, cinnamon and an underlying peppercorn. Yeasty richness ensues, with nuttiness and perhaps some milk chocolate....it is like dessert (banana/gingerbread)....the finish is clean, yet flavorful and it lingers on the palate.

M/O- Creamy and rich, but not to the extent that I would have expected, but it is very welcome at the same time. Highly sociable beer, and reasonably clean, but there is a lingering Vicks 44 feel to it. Medium-Full bodied and the wheat malt provides a nice backbone to the finish. the alcohol is very nicely hidden....another winner! Please try this at home :)

Appearance is cloudy toffee brown with a nice frothy head. Classic aromatics of banana, clove, and bubblegum backed up by caramel, toffee, and toasted bread notes. Smells like a complex banana bread. The taste is very similar to the aroma, however, not one characteristic jumps out screaming here I am. It's a well balanced mix of flavors. Nicely carbonated and surprisingly crisp. Overall a nice inviting example of the style. Worth picking it this one up.

Poured from a 500 ML bottle into a pint glass. This beer has a fantastic amber color with a sweet and smoky aroma. A crisp palate that is very satisfying. A world class beer.

Having never tried a dunkelweizen before, I wasn't sure what to expect. Going with Weihenstephaner seemed like a sensible choice to get a reference point on this style, given their world class pedigree with the hefeweizen.

Aromas are the traditional hefe characteristics of clove, banana, and a wheat bready yeast note. I didn't pick up much in the way of a roast quality, neither in aroma nor in flavor. Speaking of which, in addition to the clove/banana thing, there is a sweet wheat bread flavor that brought to mind dark honey drizzled over wheat bread crust. This sweetness improved the flavor of the beer as it warmed up. I drank most of this bottle in the low 40s, I would drink the next one in the upper 40s. It really opens up as the temperature rises.

I don't think I'd choose a dunkel over a standard hefe in most situations, but this was a damn tasty beer regardless. Its a slightly more malty and robust variant of the style, with the requisite sugars to provide a more substantial mouthfeel. This beer is worth seeking out.

Bottle dated 4035 - January 14, 2015! Hefeweizen glass. Allowed to warm for 20+ minutes from fridge.

Appearance: Pours a murky light brown, like chai tea, with slightly golden edges and 3+ fingers of extremely foamy, sandy head. Streams of carbonation flowing up. Retention is excellent, keeps a 1/2 inch head the whole way down. Lacing is remarkable.

Aroma: Banana, clove, bready citrus. Hard to tell if this is subdued on account of the age; it's my second Dunkelweizen (Schneider Weisse Original was my first, and I liked that better).

Taste: On the arrival, tastes pretty much like a hefeweizen, lightly tart, then across mid palate turns wheaty and dark-malty; not quite roasted or toasted, perhaps like a dark wheat bread. Like a real 100% whole wheat bread, not the fake stuff meant to look like wheat. A little yeasty sourness at the end, with lingering clove on the finish. Overall quite complex; more complex than most hefeweizens I've had, but at the same time more subdued. I plan on buying a newer bottle of this in the spring and re-reviewing.

Mouthfeel: Pretty highly carbonated, slightly slick, but finishes fairly (not totally) clean. It is a wheat beer, after all. Lighter side of medium bodied.

Overall: On paper, I should love dunkelweizens; the mixture of wheaty freshness and malty comfort. However by blending two things I love, this seems to favor neither. It is exceptionally complex, I could pick at this for hours; but I suppose you could say the same for a Hefeweizen. At least it is to style.

Cloudy copper pour with big thick white foam; good lace and long lasting cap and excellent carbonation. Clovey banana nose, fruity esters abound; lite caramel malt too. Flavors of cloves and subtle spicy "circus peanuts", with a sugary caramel malt underpinning. Lite, bready mouthfeel with a clean clovey tongue coating. Overall, nicely balanced with a lite malt base and a yeasty coriander linger.

Poured bottle into New Belgium globe has a dark copper color with a huge 3 finger head with great lacing. Aromas of banana and yeast as well as the taste. mouthfeel is well balance with great carbonation making you want more

Similar to Weihenstephaner Vitus but the malty flavors and banana/fruity esters flavors are more subdued. Maybe that makes it better because it's more balanced or worse because it is maybe a little less exciting that Vitus... don't know. I will have to continue to carry out comparisons.

Cloudy brown color with very strong activity. Thick creamy beige 2 finger sparkly island head, lasting around 20-30 minutes, with strong legs.

Aromas of bread and fruit esters with a slightly biscuity caramel feel. Flavors of caramel, burnt sugar, lemon, grains, herbal spices. Pleasant thick grainy sourness with a sugary bread feel. Rich and super well balanced.

Smooth and creamy light to medium body with a good amount of carbonation. Well intensified finish like tasting tender bread, lightly wheaty and lemony, ending with a dash of faint spices.

Overall, as always, an excellent craft from Weihenstephaner. Complex, rich, balanced, and delicious flavors. Super fresh, sexy, and a nice well rounded body. Would drink this all day long, and forever.

500mL bottle, I've had this a few times but never reviewed it until now
A - hazed brown colored body with a tall ivory head that holds good retention
S - banana, clove, caramel, bread, yeast
T - different than a traditional hefeweizen with more of a caramel flavor mixed in with the clove, banana, bubblegum, yeast and wheat flavors; kind of a light weizenbock of sorts
M - lighter body, moderate carbonation
O - I think I prefer their regular Hefeweizen a bit more than this one, but this is great too!

excellent copper coloring and a nice thick head that quickly dissipates, smells of wheat and has a perfect flavor balance and finishes quickly for a darker beer, remarkably light on the feel nothing like its appearance. a great beer when you will limit your intake for the evening, one of these satisfies greatly. will definitely put this into the rotation!

Absolutely fantastic version of the style. Perfect tast- cloves, banana, with a slight caramel taste. The smell is perfect- mirroring the taste. If you're going to drink the style, I'm not sure you can do any better. It's very easy drinking.

A cloudy dark amber beer with a thick creamy head with stating power. The bottle yielded a few gelatinous blobs of yeast that settled to the bottom. Smells like bread, malts and sweet pears. Very light balanced taste that is malty and bready with a pleasant sweetness. There is the taste of caramel, pears and bananas with a slight chocolaty aftertaste. The ending is a bit like a slightly tart apple cider.

This was a very easy beer to drink Pours a medium copper color. Malty with banana. Mild flavoring and moderate carbonation with a weaker aftertaste that was heavily accented by the carbonation. I'm not a true fan of Dunkels, so my rating is affected by this. But overall, not bad.

A 500ml bottle with a best before date of 16th September 2015 and poured into a weizen glass.

Appearance: The beer poured a hazy copper colour with a nice three finger cream head that stuck around for a long time leaving some spotty lacing.

Aroma: Mainly caramelised banana with hints of bready malts, caramel and a tinge of pear.

Taste: Bready malt base followed by ripe banana, bubblegum and caramel. Hints of grape and raisin in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium crisp carbonation.

Overall: A very nice dunkelweizen that is very easy to drink. I would buy this again if it was available in Hong Kong, but for now, I will just have to keep bringing it back from Thailand and South Korea.

500 ml bottle purchased from City Swiggers and poured into a Spiegelau stemmed Pilsner glass. Don't know what to say about this beer other than that I really liked it. Will absolutely be drinking this again.
