Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.30%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our dark wheat beer is impressive with its creamy white foam. A fruity-fresh sweetness and hints of mature bananas harmonise with delicious flavours of roasted malt, sparkling and full-bodied with a light caramel taste on the first sip. An excellent accompaniment from hearty meals and game to chocolate and nut desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Poured from the 16.9 oz. bottle into a Duvel snifter.

a: Translucent deep amber with an inch and a half tall off-whuite head which dissipated slowly to heavy surface foam and considerable lacing.

s: Peaches.

t: Ripe dark fruit, rather Belgian in flavor. Or perhaps many Belgians are like Bavarian Heffeweiss Dunkels.

m: Medium with great body.

o: A very tasty and refreshing brew. Just seems to blur any lines between Belgian and Bavarian. More fruity than I expected a German Weissbeir Dunkel to be.

Poured from a bottle into a perfect pint glass.

Pours light to dark brown, 1/2 inch bubbly fizzy white foam. Fruity esthers, loads of banana and clove. Classic german. Hefe nose with an edge. Light wheaty flavor. Smooth. Very fresh. Quite refreshing.

This pours a turbid mahogany color with a soft glow where the light strikes through. Lots of bubbles making their way to the top. Gold and orange hues. Fat scrumptious head of beige foam that fell slowly and leisurely to a ring and cap and then to a light layer on top. Handsome and stately in the glass.

Nose is fantastic. Wheat, deep ripe banana, soft malt with a light caramel. Bread, nutty and some apple to give it a crisp tartness with the crisp and dry smelling wheat. Spices are clove and nutmeg, cinnamon and light allspice. There's a tart aspect to the nose and it's complex but not enormously complex.

Taste is smooth, silky, soft malt. The fruits follow the nose all the way and the spices enhance your every taste of this well rounded body. Carbonation is ample but soft. The apple and the dry wheat give it a crisp flavor, the banana and the nutty malt accentuate the grain. It finishes dry and lightly sweet. Refreshing and well turned out. Silky deep and vibrant in character.

Vibrant is my favorite word to describe the malt character of a good hefe. It's a beer that lets it's malt shine. This one flowed like silk and had plenty of bread to offer but nothing heavy. Sweet, round and creamy. The mouthfeel is supple and sensational. The sweetness lies delicately and just underneath every flavor quality giving it it's dark character with the nuts and grain. Spirited, civilized, sensational. There's a good reason that this is one of the oldest brewers in the world and that they do hefewiezens so well.
