Notes / Commercial Description:
Our dark wheat beer is impressive with its creamy white foam. A fruity-fresh sweetness and hints of mature bananas harmonise with delicious flavours of roasted malt, sparkling and full-bodied with a light caramel taste on the first sip. An excellent accompaniment from hearty meals and game to chocolate and nut desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Drank from a one pint, 0.9 fl.oz. bottle purchased at Cambridge Wine & Spirits, Cambridge, MA
Served in a weizen glass

The initial pour yielded a hazy, copper-mahogany body that was topped by a five-finger, light tan, billowing crop of foam. The head was super dense and creamy and it deposited drippy patches of lacing along the glass. When the sediment was added to the beer it became turbid. A dramatic plume of yeast cascaded down through the liquid, reminding me of when cream is slowly added to iced coffee.

The nose was fantastic. Spice notes dominated. Clove, nutmeg and allspice were quite apparent. Crisp, powdery and yeasty. Bubblegum came through strong. Semi-sweet overall. A hint of smoke was noticeable as well.

The flavor profile was a half step below the aroma but very impressive nonetheless. Like the nose, the it too was very spicy. Clove and nutmeg were the most dominant spice notes. The beer was wheaty and tart in the center. Yeasty and phenolic with strong bubblegum and banana notes. The finish was crisp and dry. Supremely balanced and drinkable. Toward the end of the glass, some earthy hops began to appear.

The mouthfeel was super slick and creamy. Lighter bodied but remarkably smooth.

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel is an outstanding offering from an fantastic brewery. I love finding beers this good that are neither expensive nor that difficult to come across.

Special thanks to my girlfriend’s parents for bringing me back a Weihenstephaner gift pack straight from Bavaria. They’ll never see this, but I just wanted to mention them!

500 mL bottle poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass at fridge temperature.

L – Hazy deep amber color with a big 5-finger cream-colored frothy, billowing head. Excellent retention but not much lacing unfortunately.

S – All the usual Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier players are here with bready and grainy malted wheat, banana, and cloves. The new addition is the toasty, caramel aroma from the Vienna/Munich malts. Really nice.

T – Follows the nose nicely. It is sweet all the way through with bready and grainy wheat coming in first, then bubblegum and banana, and then the toasted and caramel malt flavors. There’s a nice spicy yeast finish with peppery and clove notes.

F – Medium-bodied with great carbonation, a crisp but creamy mouthfeel, and a spicy and dry finish. Spicy yeast lingers for a great amount of time.

O – This beer is no different than the rest of their offerings – Weihenstephan is the king of German wheat beers. The beers from this brewery define their respective styles. Not much more needs to be said.
