Brewed by:
Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan

Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.30%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our dark wheat beer is impressive with its creamy white foam. A fruity-fresh sweetness and hints of mature bananas harmonise with delicious flavours of roasted malt, sparkling and full-bodied with a light caramel taste on the first sip. An excellent accompaniment from hearty meals and game to chocolate and nut desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Have been consuming this dunkelweizen since 2010. This beer was my first entree into Bavarian dunkelweizen. As a dark beer fan, I was so impressed that I switched my beer cooler from kegs of irish stout (Beamish, Guinness and Murphy's) to Bavarian dunkelweizen (Franziskaner). Although Franziskaner has been my favorite due to availability in the keg, Weihenstephaner dunkel remains a favorite. Over the years it has morphed somewhat from a malty rich dunkel with banana and caramel to a more bitter, hoppier version (2014-2015), then returning to the original profile of the 2010-2013 vintage. Since the other Bavarian dunkelweizens have become scarce, I have returned to Weihenstephaner Weissbier dunkel and have been pleased,

The pour is a light brown color with a massive khaki colored head that sticks around forever. I've poured two of these into a tulip and the head is almost foamy to a fault.

The nose is distinctly German but IMO, much better than a lighter hefe... notes of clove, yeast, caramel, bananas & bread.

sweet from the beginning: banana bread, raisins and plums. On the finish is caramel and toffee with a hint of yeast.

The body is medium which is pretty thick for a hefe. plenty of carbonation on the tongue.

Hefeweissbier is hardly my favorite style but I do enjoy a good dunkel and this is a solid standard if you want to try a good German dunkel.
