Our dark wheat beer is impressive with its creamy white foam. Balanced and smooth but thinner than other hefes. No bitterness. Lacking the full bodied texture of other brands I've tried. However its easy to drink alot of this.

A: [4.00] The bottle has a date code "7206" that somehow I decoder ringed into (05/17/2016). The bottle lists the ABV (5.3%). The beer pours out a murky milk chocolate color. The glass is 50% beer and 50% dense off white head.

S: [2.75] Belgian yeast funk and some caramel.

T: [3.00] Light toffee, Belgian yeast (but not nearly as strong as the nose). Lemongrass.

M: [2.75] Thin body with low carbonation.

O: [3.00] I thought the Dunkel might improve the Belgian yeast flavor that I don't like. It didn't. The beer is pretty muted on flavor, feel and scent.

Dark brown to caramel colour, cloudy and unfiltered, poured a white head which settled to a white film on top of the beer. No apparent carbonation.

Smells of bananas, coriander and orange peels, cloves very similar to non dark version, but bananas more prominent at beginning.

Tastes of a sourness, followed by the cloves, coriander and orange peels, ending in a smooth cream, followed by a liquorice ending. Caramel and banana present.

Light refreshing body, with lots of carbonation.

Surprisingly light body, would say its light to medium. Very low carbonation. Had this one years ago, just now copying my review to BA.

Picked up a 500 ml bottle from TW Arrowhead in late July for $3.79. Bottle Code 7016 09:26:15.

Beer poured light brown with a nice off white head that had some good hang time.

Nose was slightly sweet and fruity.

Taste was heavenly, a very light caramel malt baseline played nicely with banana and bubble gum yeast impartations. Each sip was a pleasure.

Feel was light to medium bodied.

Overall a delicious world class beer that beer fans should try if they like this style!

From bottle to tulip. Copper/brown in color with quite a few fingers of off-white creamy head. Aromas of toasty caramel, banana, clove, vanilla, with taste both tracking aroma and bringing out the banana /vanilla /malt flavors. Creamy, smooth feel. Wonderful to have anytime.

Hazy amber in color with an amazing frothy, dense, fluffy head. Smells of malty wheat with subtle banana and bit of spice. Taste like a heartier, maltier version of their original Hefewiessbier as on would expect. Very nice. Feel is good , dry on the finish.. a bit thin maybe. Overall a very drinkable, tasty brew. Top notch.

Golden brown with one and a half finger bread. Smell of banana. Taste of roast malt, banana, and clove. End with little sour and alcohol taste. Light carbonation and medium body. A good smooth beer with little taste of alcohol like all other weihenstephaner beer. Good stuff

L: Hazy gold Amber color with a small head that dissipates quickly and no lacing.

S: Banana, clove and lemon, some darker stone fruits. Good but not mind blowing.

T: Banana and clove, notes of lemon and slight stone fruits. A slight plastic taste at the end.

F: Tastes a little watery not as creamy as expected.

O: Maybe I got a bad pour but this one didn't quite live up to expectations.

Pours the color of a mixed fruit smoothie/golden plum color. Orange blushes, 90% opaque with a distinct haziness. Head goes on for days and remains mountainous, though it leaves no lace - just politely receding.

Aromas of wheat, marshmallow, orange, clove, and pineapple. Some off notes would include a touch of stale corn and tomato.

Flavor is a bit watery to start, and introduces some corn and wheat (an off-bottle maybe?), banana, pineapple, orange, blood orange, and a touch of metal.

Feel, as noted, is watery, with a hint of creaminess or even whipped fluffiness, with a nice light pucker on the finish.

Overall, I was really expecting more from this beer, but perhaps I set my sights too high. Weihenstephaner has been a totally groundbreaking brewery (aside from being the oldest), but there are a few that are less than their world-class offerings. This is one of them. It's not bad, it's not even just good, it is indeed great, just not eye-popping. Still worth a try.

Pours cloudy hazy dark amber brown with a dense creamy off-white foam head. Smells like red apple, sweet spice, caramel, toasty wheat, with some banana and vanilla. Tastes like red apple, sweet spice, toasty wheat, bready cereal grain, clove, vanilla, mild banana, with subtle notes of caramel. Feels medium-light bodied, creamy with low carbonation. Wow! I cannot believe I had not reviewed this before. Is it really possible I had not this before? In any event, I am glad to drink this beer!

A beautiful beer, right out of the bottle. Deep rich brown, lovely head and lacing. Sensational smell and taste. Sweet, spicy, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, hazelnut. Just marvelous!

Head forms nicely with a gentle pour, pushing the two inch realm. This is a real beauty! It dissolves to a perfect ring with islands across the top. The smell is of dark malty grains with hints of bananas and roasted nuts, followed by that familiar hefeweizen crisp yeast background. The taste really delivers on what the nose predicts. Caramelized sugar, banana, fresh baked bread with just the right amount of nutty yeast. Man, I love this beer!

All I will say is that this is the only dunkel that I have tried that has achieved the goal of having a richer and sweeter profile with the dark fruit while not becoming syrupy and sweet. It's like a dry Dunkel if there's such a thing. I can detect the Hefeweiss characteristics of banana, apricot, and clove, while incorporating some dunkel character into it at the same time.

One heck of a balancing act!

The best beer I've had. Period. Everything about it says perfection. The head is thick. The color is a deep caramel color. And the flavor is complex, yet not overbearing at all. But hey, with a 1000 year old recipe, that's what you'd expect right? This beer is perfection. Must try for anyone.

500ml bottle poured into Sam Adams pint glass.

Pours a slightly hazy brick brown with three fat fingers of dense foamy beige head that leaves crumbling Greek archway lace as it recedes.

Smells of browning banana, caramel, mild bubblegum, dried fruit, clove and soft noble hops.

Tastes of more overripe banana, spiced toffee, toasted caramel, raisin, clove and more gentle grassy hops.

Feels soft and fluffy. Medium bodied with pillowy carbonation. Finishes off-sweet.

Verdict: Vigorously recommended. Another incredible beer by one of the best breweries in history.

The look was a murky light to medium brown color with a thick, rocky light tan head. Great head retention and lacing. Strong candy-banana aroma with a little wheat and bubblegum. Rich taste full of ripe banana, wheat, bubblegum, plum, and spices. Light-to-medium bodied with a clean finish. Really nice.

This dark hefe, or dunkelweizen, pours a slightly opaque medium, chocolate brown color with a nice foamy white head that quickly dissipates, but leaves a really nice lacing as you drink. The smell is of wheat and has a slightly sweet fruity hint to it. The first thing that strikes me is that the body is actually quite light. Despite the coloring I would say this is no heavier than a standard hefe. The second thing that strikes you about the flavor is the strong caramelized banana flavor that permeates. It is sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. There is also a nice wheat bready malt flavor that backs it up and gives the beer balance. A faint clove flavor is in the initial sip also, but it is fleeting. The finish is not at all dry, but crisp and extremely refreshing. This beer reminds me of a warm spring day, but it could even be a great summer beer, which is very rare for a beer of this coloring. I am not usually a huge hefe / dunkel fan because I find them to typically be more boring than some the Belgian dubbels and triples or the saisons that have the same kind of summery appeal. This however, is a definite exception. I could drink these all day without the slightest hint of boredom.

An exceptionally cloudy beer that pours a light orange brown hue with a two finger beige head.

The smell isn't particularly strong or pungent, although it is enjoyable. I'm getting notes of red McIntosh apples, toffee, and raisins. It's slightly sour overall.

The taste is smooth, fruity, malty and ever so slightly tart. I get lots of creamy, slightly sour, yeasty and spicy wheat upfront along with notes of brown sugar, toffee and caramel. Suggestions of vanilla beans. Sweet flavors of red and blue fruits like currant, grapes, apples, dates, raspberries and figs play an interesting role in the finish. Has a slight gingerbread aftertaste that I love.

Feel is medium bodied and creamy with low carbonation. Not dry, slightly sweet and very refreshing.

Incredibly delicious, I'd recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Bavarian style beers.

The date code on the back says "8046"

Appearance: Light caramel brown colored body that is slightly murky. The head is a very thick rocky eggshell white color. Great head retention...the head looks fantastic on this beer.

Aroma: It has a very light clove scent and just a bit of a copper note.

Taste: Fantastic sweet bread flavor with clove and some dried banana chips. Just a bit of an herbal hop character that is met at the end with a bit of bread crust flavor. It is a very enjoyable beer to drink.

Mouthfeel: It is a very smooth and easy beer to drink. It has just a bit of thickness to the mouthfeel without being heavy or sticky; it reminds me a bit of the way hardtack feels when eating it.

Overall: It's an amazing Dunkel and I wish I had bought more. I will probably go back and buy some more when I get the chance. I don't know why I'm not getting much aroma from this beer or where that copper penny aroma was coming from. Honestly I don't care because the flavor of the beer is so good.

Poured from 500ml bottle into pint glass. Pours a rich, opaque amber. Lots and lots of head subsides over the course of several minutes.

Smell is rather faint - malty sweetness predominates. Taste follows smell - the beer starts out sweet and finishes sweeter (though nothing close to the cloying sugariness of a Scottish wee heavy). The mouthfeel is a little light, with noticeable carbonation.

Overall, it's an okay brew. I've definitely had better dunkels (Erdinger Dunkel comes to mind), but it's by no means a drain pour.

This beer is cosmetically perfect. Billowing, full-on three-finger width fluffy, creamy, off-white crown with top-notch retention the entire way through, leaving plenty of lace hanging around the edges of the glass. Deep brown, almost bronze hue, very cloudy with glowing honey colours around the edges in the light. Fantastic.

Smells sweet-forward on the nose, with banana, caramel malt, lemon candy, straw and cereal. Again, lots of sweetness comes through on the tongue with tons of banana, caramel, lemon candy, clove, giving way quickly to notes of yeasty bread, lightly roasted malt, cereal, grain, straw, grass.

Finishes rather on the light side, which was a little disappointing as this would be phenomenal if it had more body to it. That nitpick aside, this is still an amazing brew from a brewery that never disappoints.
