Notes / Commercial Description:
Our dark wheat beer is impressive with its creamy white foam. A fruity-fresh sweetness and hints of mature bananas harmonise with delicious flavours of roasted malt, sparkling and full-bodied with a light caramel taste on the first sip. An excellent accompaniment from hearty meals and game to chocolate and nut desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

A: Into the Weihenstephan glass it goes. Huge springy khaki head dominates the glass, I'll need to let it fall before I continue the pour. Body is a playful brown sugar colored syrup with a touch of haze to it.

S: Bready yeast, over ripe banana, caramel corn and rubber.

T: Begins lightly malty with mild cinnamon dough. Tingly yeast mixes with banana peels and mineral water. Hints of red apple, ripe kiwi, raisins and molasses add a good backbone. Finishes with brown sugar, lightly fruity...somewhat cloying.

M: Medium body, somewhat hard and fluffy at times.

D: Weihenstephaner continues for me as one of the more over rated breweries out on the market. This beer was good but nothing special by a long shot.

A 500 ml bottle int my Sisson's weiss glass. A dense creamy head from a regular pour yields a four finger head. It stays for what seems like an hour but really only five minutes. It slowly dwindles down to a half inch cap that stays the duration. The glass is a cloudy light chestnut brown and carbonation activity is light. Pretty

The smell is light chocolate, banana, clove and mild fruit like apple or pear. There is a light clove that develops as it warms.

Broad malt palate. Light roasted malt in the back and chocolate and banana. Mild tartness of green apple and more wheat malt. Finish is dry, slightly roasty with more yeasty banana. Superb.

Medium mouthfeel and excellent carbonation to tingle the tounge.

Supremely drinkable. A standard for Dunkleweiss, nothing better for cooler days and night. Delicious and easy to knock back as many as you want. It is a bit more filling than a hefe due to the more substantial body but who cares!

Purchased at the LCBO for around $3.50 for a 500ml bottle. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well and pours a high 2" white head that lasts for a few minutes. Medium brown color. Unfiltered

S- Pretty good malt.

T- Nice sweet dunkel. Good malt some hops and nice cinnamon. Good body and blend. Complex to say the least. Impressive for mass produced.

M- Creamy good

O- Nice beer. Would score higher if the metallic scent was not there. Will buy again

Food Pairing

This very good beer went well with.... BBQ'd hamburgers! Topped 'em the way you like 'em. This time it was grilled Portobello mushrooms and provolone cheese

Enjoy

L: Pours an orangey brown color with a medium sized and medium bodied head that laces the glass very nicely on the way down.
S: Smells of sweet malts, banana, and clove.
T: Very sweet malt base with a very nice banana and clove taste at the end of it. The flavors mesh very nicely.
M: Very smooth, kind of heavier than it looks, but with the right amount of carbonation.
D: Very drinkable and the flavors mesh really really well. Definately worth a try.

poured a HAZY BROWN color with a huge off white/tan head that lasted forever and left nice lacing
smell is lots of banana and a hint of clove
taste is huge banana
mouthfeel was medium to light, you could see carbonation but not feel it on the tongue
drinkability is perfect and most likely the fresher the better

A excellent dunkel-weizen!
Not quite as good as it's Hefe sibling, but still world class in every way.
Pours a cloudy brown, but unlike a few others it's got just the right amount of carbonation to keep it from being too foamy.
Taste is a little muddled at first but as it warms, lots of flavor comes through. It the overpowering chocolate flavor others have but I do taste fruit (banana, pear) and just the right amount of dark bready sweetness with a hint of cocoa.
A solid brew all the way around and likely the best Dunkel-Weisen you'll run into just because it seems like a style the US hasn't really welcomed yet.

My first Dunkel. 500ml bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Fluffy one & a half finger, slightly off white head. Lacing isn't great. Deep amber color. Fairly hazy. Big chunks of yeast (or maybe cloves?) at the bottom of the pour.

S: Sweet caramel first. Light cloves behind that. Just a little banana and lemon coming through.

T: Just like the aroma. Sweet caramel malts on the tip of the tongue. Light cloves swirling around the rest of the mouth. Faint banana and lemon finishing it off.

M: Light to medium bodied. Little bit creamy. Not as refreshing or as crisp as the regular Hefe.

O: Being my first Dunkel, I don't have a base to go on except that Weihenstephaner's Hefe is exceptional. This is a very good beer. The caramel malts are a nice deviation from a typical Hefe.

pours a dunkely brown with orange on the edges. one-finger head packed tight with steadily rising carbonation through the body. thin lacing wastes no time returning to the body of beer. summery and light.

aroma is wheaty and leaves not much to say. smells good. smells like wheat, i like wheat, i want to drink it.

taste? smooth and wheaty, mostly bitter though with some sweet caramel notes also weighing heavy. fresh tartness of lemon and sweet clove back it all up. doesnt measure up to the regular hefe. flavors cancel each other our here moreso than complementing each other. banana is still here but forced into the background by a dark burnt breadiness. ok, good german session.
