I will add a disclaimer up front: I prefer stouts over porters because I feel that stouts are smoother, with the same malt undertones as a porter but not quite as pronounced. Had this on tap at the Brewpub. Nice chocolate color with a good white head. This beer had a nice coffee aroma and similar taste. However there is distinct bite and aftertaste. It says on their website that the Pro Bono Publico cigarette was the Duke family's first cigarette. That is kind of the aftertaste I had; burnt ash tray cigarettes. It wasn't that bad but I would probably not order it again. Again, it may be my bias playing a role here.

Poured on-tap and served in a shaker pint, the beer is a dark, brown-to-black coloring with a foamy, light, bubbly tan head. Nose of coffee and milk chocolate, very balanced, with hints of roast and smoke. Flavors are more chocolate forward, with a blend of bittersweet and milk/cream. Subtle roasted coffee notes, too. Smooth, slightly dry body, with a chocolate sweet aftertaste. Semisweet linger on a smooth, dry finish. Good beer.

I had this beer at the brewery from tap in their 3/5 oz sample glasses. This beer looks and smells lovely. Dark brown, rich and clear. A hint of coffee to the smell and it gives you the expectations for a smooth beer. However, the taste is disappointing because it isn't anything special. It is a decent porter but not a spectacular one. A bitter taste is left in the mouth afterwards which does not leave you looking for more. I would not seek this beer out but if I visited Bull City again I might give it another try.
