The Hopshop is located on the corner beneath The Deli Restaurant & Z-Bar. They've got a decent selection of beers, mostly kept cold (21 cooler doors worth), as well as 8 beers on tap for growlers. The service is great. I didn't feel like I was being sold but the guy running the show on the day I was there but he was quite active in asking me about what types of beers I liked, what I was looking for, what I'd tasted before, what seasonals I'd be interested in and so forth, so they get an A+ for service. He also livened things up and made it feel comfortable for everyone else in the shop, so that helped the vibe. I wonder what it's like, in the basement, when it's slow, if there's no one there with personality? That might suck; but at least it's clean and well organized. As to their selection, I didn't actually find anything to buy. Bummer! The 3 or 4 items I asked about they didn't have, although I at least have to give them a pass on the Oak Aged Vanilla World Wide Stout as it was only just recently released, but, the fact remains I was essentially unimpressed. And as to the prices, I found beers cheaper at other places (Pletcher's, for one, or Wegmans and Giant and Weis as well) but their selection is hard to beat given the area. Where they need to improve is in their single 12 oz. bottle selection. What I found was limited and seemingly picked over. I'll gladly buy larger bottles (although their prices were slightly higher than I'd seen elsewhere for similar items), but I rarely buy 6-packs if I'm not familiar with the beer. So, do I recommend it? Well, yes, but with warning as I noted.

Great selection of six packs from various distributors with a rotating selection of 5(6?) taps to fill your growler. Parking can be troublesome downtown but it is worth it.

In from NH and wanted a few good beers I can't get at home...Hopshop came highly recomended.
Basement store, well lit, super organized and clean…felt like the shop was new, but was told by store clerk that it’s been open for 2 years. Decent selection but most of which can be had at any good bottle shop…none really stood out. Can’t get Great Lakes, Duck Rabbit or Bells in NH/MA, so wanted to try a spattering…YOU CAN’T. No breaking 6/4 packs at all. Wtf? So…I was required to either buy a mix case of beer for the one’s I wanted to try, Or pick off their single rack - which is basically where the old beer that no one wants go’s to die. Great! Ended up forcing myself to pick from the graveyard for a mixed 4pk, but did find a local bomber (Spring House: Big Gruesome) which sounded tasty.

Gave service a 2 only because of the inability to break packs.
It shoud be noted that the store clerk was awesome and agreed with my Philosophy.

Definitely the best bottle shop in State College. It is an A+ for a visit to State College but I won't rate is solely on that criterion.

Atmosphere is really cool. Clean, well organized and most of the beer is refrigerated. Selection is very good, including some great seasonal releases and lots of local bottles. Seemed to be a lot of wasted space that will hopefully be used to increase selection in the future.

Service was very friendly and knowledgeable.

Growler fill station had 4 choices, which was good to see in PA.

A must visit if State College is your destination. A great bottle shop but still room to improve.

Interviews done, on the way back to the condo. Heister St, you say? Well that's not more than a block out of the way from here.

Atmosphere: The corner of Heister and Calder, the last door before the alley. A short trip downstairs reveals a wide open space, coolers lining three walls with a warm mix-a-six and other new seasonals on shelves. To the left on entrance is a growler station with four taps (2 Elk Creek, 1 Gamble Mill and Yuengling Oktoberfest).

Quality: I like the lay-out, industrial and sparse but loaded with beer goodies. Service was friendly and talkative throughout. A growler station downtown is also a brilliant idea. And yes, they fill all growlers!

Service: I was promptly greeted and has a good banter with the staff. Seems like a good crew that is into craft beer.

Selection: This is where the store differentiated itself from the rest of the downtown bottle shop scene. Beer, beer and more beer. I was immediately drawn to the preponderance of Dogfish Head, including Life & Limb (and plenty of it too). The coolers nearest the growler station are singles, bombers and dinner bottles. Stone, DFH, Smuttynose, Malheur, Otto's, Troegs. Just a smattering. The remaining rows of coolers are for six packs (again Otto's and PA beers are plentiful). Finally, warm bottles are available for mixed packs, although the selection available to mix seemed a little pedestrian. Oh yeah, still has some Ithaca 13 and Brooklyn Sorachi Ace as well. I left with Life & Limb and Sorachi Ace. I'll be getting more this weekend.
