Visited on 3/11/11.

I chose to stop by McGreevy's after I landed in Boston about 3 weeks ago. I had read about how a video for the Dropkick Murphys was filmed there and I wanted to get pictures for my brother.

While it is technically a sports bar,it does have some interesting beer and food choices. In fact, it's supposedly "America's First Sports Bar".

The service seemed to be decent but you should grab a menu before taking a seat. There weren't a lot of people when I arrived but it took about 10 minutes to get service.

Lots of paraphernalia on the walls, mainly Boston Red Sox and the Dropkick Murphys. Very homely, relaxed atmosphere.

Draft and bottle selection is somewhat lacking but Wachusett Green Monsta was available on tap, along with Guinness and a few others.

Food and beer prices are typical for Boston. You could score a decent meal for 20-25 bucks. Speaking of the food, I had a nice medium-cooked burger with fries. It was delicious and I feel it was worth the price.

Not a traditional beer bar and certainly not a raucous sports bar either. Its a happy hybrid that beer sports and food fans could enjoy.

These Boylston street bars are all somewhat cookie-cutter. Every few years, they close one of them down for a while --give it a name change and a face lift and re-open as something that is supposed to be quite different from what it was before. This technique rarely works.

In McGreevy's case, the artwork on the walls is really cool old baseball posters and such-I believe some of it is leased but a lot of it is owned by the Dropkick Murphy's leader Ken Casey. This is probably the best part about this bar.

The beer selection is just about as average as you can get and I'm kind of surprised that it is even listed here on BA. I got a PBR when I was there and it was only $3 --which I liked. They don't really have any craft options on draft other than maybe Sam Adams and Harpoon and there were a couple in the bottle that were a little more craft oriented but still nothing really worth getting excited about.

The staff were pretty friendly and attentive and there really isnt anything negative to say about the service.

If you happen to be walking up or down Boylston street and are thirsty, its worth getting a beer in here but theres no way I'd recommend it as a place for a beer enthusiast. Sports enthusiast --sure just to check out the cool memorabilia--stop in, but for beer alone--not a great spot.

I was surprised when i saw that someone actually added McGreevy's on BA, mostly because its not what I would call a good beer spot. It's the perfect place to watch the game and hang out after work if you want some good food and atmosphere. Usually when I go it's busy and there is lots going on, but if you grab a table don't expect world class service. If you looking for friendly workers sit right at the bar. Every single bartender is talkative and they have no problem going heavy handed on your drink if you request it. As far as beer goes, yes they have a few nice beers you wouldn't think a sports bar would have, but its nothing more than your average Boston light beer club house. Point blank if you work near by and you want a nice bite and fun with friends or co-workers this is the spot, but if you want to ad some beers to your list of newbies than your not at the right spot
