On tap at Hop City, Birmingham; taster glass (for a whopping $5.50)

A: Rich dark brown bordering on black with a tan half finger head that lingered.

S: Espresso, cocoa nibs, vanilla and a pinch of cinnamon.

T: Rich, robust with lightly bitter coffee and cocoa leading the way. Taste slides into vanilla and light cinnamon. As it warms, the flavors deepen and the richness comes out even more. Slow down, this sucker is 13% and I feel it.

M: Medium the heavy with medium, smooth carbonation.

O: A bit on the pricey side, even for a sample pour, but glad I got to try it. A terrific share, for sure.

22oz bottle from 2017 RIS tasting. Pour looks about right, black body with small tan head. This is a big coffee cake of a beer, chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, coffee. Breakfast in a bottle. Slick and chewy, and warms you up with the 13%ABV. Should be drinking this in the winter, not in May.

22oz bottle. No dating information found.
Dark brown colored body with medium brown back lit highlights. Two finger of tan head, which sticks around as a thick cap. Leaves behind a thick pattern of lacing.
Aroma notes of dark roasted malts - dark chocolate, coffee, with just a hint of sweeter vanilla. No cinnamon in the smell.
Taste does include the flavor cinnamon, along with the dark chocolate and coffee. Again the vanilla is there just to smooth things out a bit.
Thicker mouth feel, with smooth texture. Good carbonation.
This stout stays away from being overly sweet, and has some bitterness, but overall the beer is smooth and dry. Tasty meld of flavors. Aftertaste is mostly bitter coffee based. Hides the higher ABV% well.

Pours black with a finger of caramel colored foam. Head formation is dense and retains fairly well. Aroma is light bodied, fleshy coffee, soy sauce, a very staccato vanilla bean and roasty malts. Soy sauce fades as the beer warms, but it still maintains a notable presence. Flavor profile is light bodied coffee, milk chocolate, roasty malts and then an overwhelming soy sauce. Vanilla bean is lightly present at the start, but quickly fades into obscurity like a child actor. Soy sauce notes fade slightly as the beer warms, but are still abudant. While some notes are beautiful and well crafted, the soy sauce bags it all up and dumps it in the trash. Mouth feel is medium in thickness, with a still texture. Overall, not very good. It's big and while it does hide the 13% ABV well, the soy sauce aroma and taste just smothers it.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 22oz bottle.

The nose on this beer really disoriented me - I wasn't certain whether the bottle had turned (not entirely unlikely, given where it came from - there were years-old IPAs on shelves all around it) as there was a strange sourness to it. I pour into a 12 oz glass and left the beer to breathe and warm up for fifteen or so minutes before giving it a shot.

Thankfully, the sourness had left. However, as much as I'd hoped for the beer to open up and give up some of that chili and cinnamon in the nose and flavor, I was a little disappointed. The flavors just felt somewhat muted. It's quite similar to a Prairie Artisan Bomb... but with somewhat dull flavor notes. The peppers aren't super hot, the cinnamon and sweetness aren't accentuated by the spice, etc. It's just a little underwhelming.

It's a decent beer - though a little sweet for me. But it tastes old. Judging by friends' reviews, I'm not alone in these impressions - so I suspect it's not the age of the bottle, but just the beer itself. Slightly disappointed, but it's worth trying.

Pours a beautiful pitch black, finger of dark tan head, moderate lacing. Aromas of leather and vanilla most prominent, very slight lacquer/varnish, general "spice." In terms for flavor, the coffee is strong, lending a nice burnt, roasty flavor to balance out and overcome the malts; spice (cinnamon, I guess, from the label, but otherwise still a general idea to me) more pronounced here. Mouthfeel a bit thin to me, both when poured and as it continues to warm up over a long session. It's alright.

Definitely getting the cinnamon, chocolate, some vanilla and espresso. Nice underlying roasted malt character. Light to medium bodied. Some bitterness in the finish. Smooth sipper. Pretty good, but the flavors are a bit muted...or balanced. I can't tell.
