Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Penn Quarter Porter is our first in a line of draft-only limited-release beer, and it's a robust porter! In the way that The Public is on the line between a pale ale and an IPA, this is on the line between a porter and a stout - with chocolate notes and a dry, roasted finish.

Poured from a can, it is almost black but not opaque with a thin quickly dissipating head. It is malt-forward with a modicum of coffee and chocolate flavors, but the full mouth feel of a Porter is lacking. There is moderate carbonation and a bit of hops tang at the end. Overall, far more interesting than a lot of Lagers at this price range, but just adequate as a Porter.

Thanks to beatjunkee for this one, from the NBS BIF #3 box. 12oz can poured into 10oz goblet. Poured a solid black, with just a thin cap of tan head that dissipated quickly, and left no lacing.

The aroma featured some solidly roasty malts, bordering on coffee-ish, and just a hint of cocoa. Pretty similar on the tongue, with the roast lingering on the back of the palate.

The body was just a bit thinner than I look for in the style, but smooth and clean. Drinkability was very good, the beer was gone quickly and easily. Overall, a nicely solid example of the style, and worth trying if you encounter it.

Reviewing a cellar temp can poured into a snifter. The beer pours cola brown with creamy tan head of about 1.5 cm foaming up and slowly fading to a sturdy surface layer with some clingy tight lattice on the glass. Aroma is rich and malty with chocolate and some roasted malt and a little brown sugar. There is just a faint hint of dark fruit buried in the nose and I dont really get any hops. The nose is pretty big and appealing.
First sip reveals an average body with very fine carbonation that tingles across my palate. Flavor is malty and smooth with dark cocoa, roast malt and a bit of coffee notes. I dont get any of the dark fruit but there is just a hint of brown sugar that lingers a bit on the finish. The roasted malt notes also hang around, but no real hop presence nor any hits of booze.
An easy drinking flavorful porter with a good nose and enjoyable drinking experience. Worth a purchase if you like malty porters and a highly drinkable experience.
