No head on a jet black body. Licorice, coffee, whiskey, dark chocolate and dark fruit on the nose. Palate is very earthy up front and bland moving to bourbon and oak with a very musty sense. The finish is mostly roasted malt and coffee. Smooth. Medium body ad light carbonation. Not sure if I don't like this base beer for barrel aging. I thought many of their others aged better.

Thanks to queens1130 for sharing this one at jmgrub's tasting.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, and some woody aromas. Taste is much the same with a slightly tart flavor and a mild roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is drinkable but not as good as I was hoping for.

22oz bottle poured into my Devil's Backbone glass. Black in color with just a trace amount of a head scattered across the top of the beer. It's got a pretty steady stream of carbonation bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass as well.

The aroma shows a good amount of the whiskey and oak to it. I get some coffee and chocolate notes to it as well. It comes together very well in the aroma.

The taste shows the barrel characteristics pretty prominently. Whiskey, oak and vanilla flavors all come out in it. I get some dark chocolate and coffee coming out in the finish, but overall the base flavors of PQP seem a little overshadowed.

The mouthfeel feels very light and almost watery for the style. Carbonation seems overdone as well unfortunately for my tastes in the style. The mouthfeel was the weakest part of the beer for me.

Overall, it was a good beer but not a standout one in the style unfortunately. The mouthfeel could have been a little fuller and carbonation lower. The barrel flavors were pretty good, but they dominated the base beer a little too much for me. I love PQP, but it just didn't seem to hold up all that well to the barrel treatment to me unfortunately. Still, a pretty solid beer to sip on this evening though.

22 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours black, topped with a ½ finger of creamy dark mocha froth. This retains with some thin richness around the edges of the glass, leaving back a foamy cascade of spotty lacing that slowly drips down the sides. The aroma has a nice mix to it of barrel up front, with some spice and burnt molasses character that quickly give way to more sweet notes of vanilla, chocolate, and toffee before this finishes with some green citrus and dark roast along the back. This has a solid transition between the flavors here in the nose.

The taste has more of the base up front, with chocolate and caramel (made sweeter by a vanilla addition), light herbal citrus flavor and roasted coffee along the back. The whiskey flavor here has more of a flat burnt character to it than it did in the nose, leaving this with a dry, burnt and tannic feel on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a sprightly carbonation in the mouth that has a bit of sharpness to it on the tongue before giving way to more of a firm creaminess as this moves out into the mouth. There isn’t much alcohol here, just a smidge from the barrel that hangs a bit of charred warmth on the back of the throat after each sip.

This was OK. I just wish that the barrel had contributed more definable flavors to the taste than it did in the nose, instead of giving this a flat whiskey feel throughout a lot of the profile. Maybe a little beefiness to those base flavors would have helped in this instance. I still really like the aroma on this though and this drank about as well as you would expect. This is probably worth checking out.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. 2012 bottle.

Appearance - Dark brown. Big khaki head. Thick collar. Reddish transparency at the edges.

Smell - Some roast. A lot of acids and cherry fruitines. Ruh roh. No barrel.

Taste - And it's infected. Lots of fruity acetic sourness. Some roast still comes through, but it's fully infected.

Mouthfeel - Dry. Well carbonated. Sour.

Overall - Obviously, I had a different experience than everyone else.

Had two glasses of this tonight at Pizzeria Paradiso in Dupont. Poured in a 10 oz. snifter, this is their normal PQP aged in Catoctin Creek Whiskey barrels.

a - Pours a very dark brown, almost black color, with half an inch of light tan head and low to moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of whiskey, oak, vanilla, roasted malts, sweet chocolate, dark fruits, and toasted malts. As it warms up some caramel malts as well. Really nice.

t - Tastes of whiskey, oak, vanilla, chocolate, sweet dark fruits, roasted malts, and cream. Sweet fruits as well. Again, quite nice.

m - Medium to full body and low to moderate carbonation. Easy to drink.

o - Overall I thought this was a great BA porter; tied for their best beer for far with OTWOA. The whiskey is there but not dominating. The nose has a lot of nice sweet chocolate and vanilla, while the taste has those and some sweet dark fruits. Easy to drink beer I'd love to have again.

The beer is dark brown with a thin beige head that fades rapidly, leaving some oily lacing on the glass. The aroma offers roast, oak, chocolate, whiskey. Smells very nice. Roasted chocolates and vanilla with a delicate whiskey finish. Light in bodied and full of flavor. Nice oak character - bold but not overly woody or tannic. A really tasty beer. I would definitely recommend this.

Poured on tap at pizza Paradiso Dupont DC into a snifter glass.

A slightly coffee head is made but disappears quickly. Top is a little filmy. Body color looks like a classic fair walnut brown but really comes across as a very dark garnet red especially with the dark cherry edges.

Nose is real giant vanilla, and oak notes. Woody sense starts taking over, ripped and splintered to sanded wood dust.

Taste is interesting. Probably one of the only beers I have had that takes the rye whiskey angle and it makes it shine (Catoctin ? no?). Fruity spiced rye straight angle somewhere between purple grape and blueberry. Fruity caramel in mid palate. Mouthfeel is almost vinous but a little wet even for a porter. Light bodied but also a noticeable hint of tight fizz.

Overall this is only the second barrel aged porter i've had, and I went in with not much excitement. The first one I had didn't work for me, but this is quite decent. However, this one was considerably more enjoyable, but just not drawn to it like other barrel aged stouts of common practice in comparison. Still a very worthy beer.

This is by far the best beer I've had from DC Brau and damn you for making a Porter. On tap at Meridian Pint. Served in a snifter. Beer is black with a tight tan head of small bubbles, lacing good, carbonation is low, retention is fine.

Aroma is like a sweet porter, the whiskey is there but it is subtle, nice, roast and malt too.

Beer is medium in body and sweet throughout the palate, the first sip I didn't get any barrel at all but the second sip was barrel heavy, nice whiskey, nice oak, a great moderately bitter finish, not dry. A good beer overall, a really good beer overall. I would have this again in fact this should be a seasonal release, you could even get away with more barrel character. Very good beer.
