Served in a pint glass

A- Hazy copper with a reddish hue with a two finger head that leaves some nice sheets of lacing.

S- Rye and bready malt upfront followed by subtle citrus hops including lemon zest, orange and grapefruit.

T- Follows the nose with a nice amount of rye and bready malt with some subtle citrus hops. There is a bit of pine hops as well as some herbs towards the finish.

M- Medium carbonation and body. Finishes slightly dry.

O- An interesting beer, but I thought it could be a little more balanced with some bigger hop presence. First offering from Finch and am excited to try the rest of their offerings.

Imbibed at Owen & Engine, Chicago, 07/28/2011.

Appearance -- Pours a brassy copper hue with a slim sudsy eggshell head and a smattering of lace. Looks good.

Smell -- Dry and bready amber malt, some detectable rye grain, leafy hops and dry grass. Smell is very dry.

Taste -- The hop profile is, to say the least, strange: leafy vegetation, dried grasses, and...sage?? There is a strong herbaceous sage-like note that is very distracting. Beyond this, the malt is dry and bready, and the rye is definitely present, but seems more of a seasoning than the focal point of the grist.

Mouthfeel -- Medium-light in body with crisp carbonation. Of all of the attributes of this beer, this is the most well-done.

Overall -- On the whole, this beer tastes unfocused. The hop combination is off-putting, and the rye seems out of place. I can appreciate the spirit of experimentation, but not all such endeavors should make it to mark it.

I doubt that I would be interested in trying this again.

Served in a Sierra Nevada shaker pint glass at Poor Phil's.

Never had a California common that employed so much rye before. Here's to experimentation: It pours a a hazy sunset sienna topped by a finger of cream-white foam. The nose comprises wheat, light graham cracker, black pepper, light clove, light greens, and light toffee. The taste holds notes of spicy rye, wheat bread, light cocoa, grass, light pine, and light orange rind. The rye adds an enjoyable richness of flavor you don't normally encounter in this style. The body is a light medium, with a moderate carbonation and a rather dry finish. Overall, a very nice take on the style, something I hope catches on a bit in the future.

Had a generous 6 oz. sample of this poured during the Finch's brewery tour (on tap). This is a California Common with Rye.

A: Pours a light and hazy dark orange/copper mixture. As a nice 1 finger light yellow head that has some nice retention. Nice splotchy lace down the sample glass.

S: I pick up the rye right away and it mellows out into a light citrus fruit. Nice malt backbone picks up as well.

T: I get a nice grassy rye with same light fruit I picked up in the nose. The is malt spine that carries me until end, but it drops off pretty quickly. Bland finish with a very slight hop bitterness.

M: Very crisp and refreshing brew. I could drink a ton of these on a hot summer day. Pretty bland mouthfeel on the palate though.

O: A very refreshing beer, but the flavor profiles lacked in sustainability. Would have liked to see some flavors follow me until the end of each sip.
