From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #70 (November 2012):

Reminds of some of the old school robust Red Ales aka American Strong Ales from a decade or more ago. A bit raw and chaotic but not so much that it loses its drinkability, love the fact that this is a “in your face” type of ale. Without a doubt this will take care of your hop fix.

STYLE: American Strong Ale
ABV: 8.0%
AVAILABILITY: Rotating

LOOK: Hazed reddish copper hue, sticky light tan lacing

SMELL: Pungent, hop resin, spicy rye, rose water, dates, minty, orange pith, tobacco, caramel

TASTE: Bitter, slightly hop astringent, pungent, chewy, rye spice, biscuity, hay, grapefruit, mint, fresh grass, passion fruit, quite warming, caramel, bitter alcoholic finish

This pours a murky reddish brown color with a dark beige head. The aroma is heavy with malts giving a sweet grain scent. The taste is very strong with sweet malts and rye in the beginning and as you finish, it grows into a slightly bitter after taste. I’m sure there are people that will like this beer, but it’s not quite I am looking for in an American Strong Ale.

Goes down smooth, has a wonderful balance, and mouthfeel is great. But during my second pour, finishing the can, a bunch of sediment let loose. I can see it floating around in what was originally a mostly clear glass of beer. I presume these are hop remnants, but I don't know for sure. Nothing written on the can to clue me in ...

Not for everybody, there's a distinctive taste to all Finch's beers. You either love it or hate it and I love it!

Poured from a 16 oz. can into a Surly tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a somewhat hazy amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big three finger off white head with decent retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing.

Smell: An earthy, juicy, and sweet malt forward aroma with hints of caramel, biscuit, and citrus. Upfront toasted malt with sweet hints of caramel, biscuit, grains, toast, toffee, yeast, and subtle roast. Spicy hints of rye. Sweet hints of sugar. Solid hop presence with earthy hints of grass and pine along with citrus fruit hints of orange, lemon, and grapefruit. A pretty solid big red aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, an earthy, spicy, juicy, and sweet malt forward taste with good notes of caramel, biscuit, rye, and citrus. Toasted malt with some upfront notes of caramel, biscuit, toffee, toast, grains, yeast, and some light roast chocolate. Spicy notes from the rye. A little sugar sweetness as well. Earthy and herbal hops with notes of pine resin and grass. Citrus hop notes of orange, grapefruit, and lemon. Solid balance. A pretty nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Chewy, spicy, and fairly drying on the finish. Alcohol heat is hidden well.

Overall: A pretty solid take on an imperial Red Ale. Good caramel malt flavors with a solid kick of rye spice and hops.

A: Pours a chill-hazaed amber color with a fingers worth of head that lasts for a while and leaves some nice lacing

S: Very malty. Get some caramel and light toastiness. Some herbal and earthy hops in there as well

T: Malty all the way through. Get caramel, some very light spiciness, and sweetness. Finishes with a hint of herbal bitterness from the hops

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: A solid amber with plenty of kick. This is for sure a malt-lovers amber, as there is very little hop presence in the way of all the malts. Decent price point given the abv, but still a little pricey at $10.49 for a 4-pack of pint cans

Give me a burger, and Fascist pig. My wife can call me a fascist pig all day long. This is a big malty red ale with enough hop to balance the taste. Finch's has a more hop forward angle but the caramel malts balance beautifully in this beer.

This is my got to beer for when I want to sip on a beer for a while, watching a game. The caramel malts take the first taste, and the hops dry out the finish.

Compares well with Stone Arrogant or perhaps Deep Red Imperial IPA (Torpedo)?
Overall, I'm rating this brewer higher than BA.

A: Deep ruby red with mild haze body topped by dense sandy head that lasts and laces.
S: A bit faint, mostly caramel at first w hints of molasses, bread crust, nuts, hops, brewery room. Some Roast as in red ales. I find it a good seesaw between sweet malts and zippy hops.
T: Ditto on taste. Stronger, plenty here, and dominantly french toast sweet. Maple, marmalade, toasted bread crusts. Then finishing with some hop pepper and spice. There's a bit of medicinal shellac too. Complex, too sweet for more than one, but not cloying.
MF: plenty of sticky body.

Match this with robust foods, not a first beer of the night. Very much a beer hall / tasting room beer.
