Picked up a bottle at the former monastery during a vacation in Umbria.
Has a milk chocolate brown appearance especially towards the end of the bottle. Aggressive pour into a tulip glass produced a nice 1 inch head which lasted a while.
Smells of chocolate malt, with a note of chestnuts and a little fruit. Smells like a Belgian dubbel.
There is some fruit, nuts (I'd say roasted chestnuts), and milk chocolate here. Also has a nice smooth milk chocolate taste, sort of like chocolate syrup. A bit of a tang on the tongue from the charred malt and an ashy dryness. The sweet chocolate and the ashy dryness compete in an interesting way, but the finish is very ashy, dry, and peppery.
Body is medium and carbonation is low. A little fizzy, but bordering on flat.
A decent beer with some sweet and roasty elements of the Belgian dubbel style but definitely more of a charred malt and ashy character. Could as well be a nut brown ale. Worth trying, especially if you happen to be in Umbria. San Biagio is a nice place to visit up in the hills, about 45 minutes from Assisi and they have a hotel, restaurant, and a tasting room. While I was there, I met the brewer, and saw the small brewery which was in the midst of a small expansion.

Bottle thanks to Nanoslug, who got this from a REAL Italian (unlike me, a fake Italian). Apparently he also brought a salami, that cunning sausage smuggler!
Cloudy dark reddish-brown in color with a small tannish head that fades.
Malty aroma with considerable dark fruit notes, berries, apple and mild toast.
Rather cidery flavor, with plum, molasses, toast, and a little plastic.
Medium-bodied with average carbonation. Not too impressive really, just ok.
